Asthma affects the small airways (bronchioles) that carry air and out of the lungs. If you have asthma your airways can become inflamed. More than 5.2 million people in the UK are being treated for asthma and about 1.1 million of these are children.

Doctors don’t know the cause of asthma. It is linked to hay fever and eczema.

People use inhalers to control their asthma. There are different types of inhalers. If it gets worse they may need to use a nebuliser. Sometimes they may need to take steroid tablets.
