SYSTEM IS BEING INSTALLED.

INTRODUCTION

This publication provides a logical sequence of procedures to follow when installing a 4020 system. Throughout this publication, you are often referred to the documentation listed below. In such cases, notes describing use of the documents will generally follow immediately.

Supplied Documentation

The envelope that contained this publication also contains the following documents:

4020 Fire Alarm Back Box - Installation Instructions (FA4-21-404)

Field Wiring Diagram, 4020 (84 l-842)

l Wiring diagrams for specific devices are included with the devices.

4020 Fire Alarm - Operating Instructions (FA4-31-401)

Except for the last publication, all of the above documents are required for system installation.

Note: If you are unfamiliar with fire alarm system wiring, you can order a publication entitled How to Wire a Building for a Fire Alarm System (Pub No. FA2-91-001) from Simplex.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

Note: If possible, proceed through the installation process in the sequence that follows.

1. Inventory the delivered equipment.

Note: In addition to the envelope that contained this publication, supplied 4020 material includes an envelope containing installation hardware.

l When you are required to use installation hardware during a system installation procedure, that fact is noted at the start of the procedure.

2. Install the back box.

l See accompanying document entitled 4020 Fire Alarm Back Box lnsfallation Instructions.

. Note the restrictions for routing of Power-Limited Wiring (see Figure 1).

Note: The installation hardware envelope contains the panel keys.

3. Mount the electronics into the back box.

l See Figure 1 for panel layout.

l Connect the ground (green) wire from the CPU bay to a grounding screw on the back box.

l Per article 250 of the National Electrical Code, a dedicated equipment ground conductor must connect to the other grounding screw (consult NEC Table 250 for conductor size).

POWER-LIMITED FIELD WIRING ONLY IN NON-SHADED AREA.

4. Using the SYSTEM POINT SUMMARY (supplied by your local Simplex Rep.) and the appropriate pages in the enclosed 4020 Field Wiring Diagram, connect terminals and tag all system wiring.

General Notes

A. The index for the 4020 Field Wiring Diagram is found on the document’s first page.

B. The 4020 Field Wiring Diagram includes pages titled “4020 Precautions for Wiring.”

C. At both ends of each circuit, tag wires with I/O terminal number or MAPNET@ channel number and polarity (if polarity applies).

l For example, I/O 4+ and I/O 4-.

D. T-tapping is permitted only for Style 4 (formerly Class B) MAPNET II@ circuits.

5. Install the peripheral devices and E.O.L. resistors.

Note 1: The installation hardware envelope contains the required resistors.

l 3.3K resistors are color coded orange, orange, red (and have a gold tolerance band); 1 OK resistors are color coded brown, black, orange (and also have a gold tolerance band).

l Resistors other than those described above will be used by the Simplex Rep during installation checkout.

Note 2: Except for devices that connect to MAPNET II@ channels (devices named Ml -1, M2-15, etc.), wire peripherals in accordance with the appropriate 4020 Field Wiring Diagram (84 7-842).

l Wire a MAPNET II@ device in accordance with the diagram that accompanies the device. THEN SET THE DEVICE’S ADDRESS SWITCHES (see Figure 2 on page 4).

Note 3: A MAPNET II@ device’s address is represented by the final digit(s) in the zone’s name.

Examples: The device that connects to a zone named Ml -2 must have its switches set to address 2; the device that connects to a zone named Ml -117 must have its switches set to address 117.

l See page 4 for a complete listing of MAPNET II@ addresses.

Note 4: Use a small screwdriver or ball point pen to set device address switches.

Note 5: After setting the device address, mark the device’s address label to agree with the address switches (see Figure 3 on page 4).

6. Check and terminate ail field wiring (see Figure 4 for terminal ‘locations).

a. Check each circuit for voltages, shorts, or opens as follows:

1. With the meter set on 3OOVAC, read the voltage across the circuit.

Meter must read 0 volts.

2. With the meter set on 60 VDC, read the voltage across the circuit again (this time in both directions).

Meter must read 0 volts.

3. With the meter set on OHMS x 10 and its (+) and (-) leads connected to the circuit’s (+) and (-) wires, respectively, check resistance.

l Readings must compare favorably with those shown in Figure 6 (see page 7).

Note: if reading indicates an open in a circuit that includes a smoke detector, make sure the detector head(s) are properly mounted and seated.

l Circuits always read “open” (infinity) if detector power is absent and separately-powered devices (four-wire smoke detectors) are involved.

b. Connect the wires to their terminals in accordance with the SYSTEM POINT SUMMARY and the appropriate field wiring diagrams.

c. For Power-Limited systems, you must not route Power-Limited field wiring in the shaded areas of Figures 4 (see Figure 5 for routing information).

Notes:

1. Non-power limited field wiring (AC power, Battery Wiring, City Connection) must be installed and routed in the shaded area only.

2. Power limited field wiring (all connections in the unshaded area except the city) must be installed and routed as shown.

3. Keep slack to a minimum inside the enclosure. Using tie wraps (supplied), neatly dress and bundle the wiring together. Anchor power-limited wiring to the tie points.

4. Tie the wiring located between the bays to the internal wiring troughs (if applicable.)

5. When switching power through relay contacts, power for these circuits must be provided by the system power supply that is listed for Fire Protective Signaling use.
