Juicer OR Blender & Nut Milk BagThe simplest way to make fresh juice is with a juicer. A couple of my recommendations are:Breville Ikon multispeedBreville Juice Fountain CompactOmega 4000Champion JuicerGreen Star Juice ExtractorSamson Ultra Juicer

If you already have a blender and don’t want to buy a juicer, simply purchase a nut milk bag or cheesecloth to strain your juice through after you blend it. This removes the pulp and fiber from the drink, making things easier on your digestive system. Squeeze as much juice as you can out of the pulp before discarding it. You can purchase a nut milk bag for $8.95 online from www.sunfood.com.

Himalayan or Celtic Sea Salt for the Salt Water FlushThe morning of the juice fast you’ll have an option to do a salt water flush. The purpose of the salt water flush is to induce a bowel movement. If stuff isn’t moving out of your body, the toxins are staying in.

Juicing helps to release toxins into the blood stream so they can be prepped for flushing. However, the thing about juice is that the fiber from the food is removed during the juicing process. Fiber helps stimulate bowel movements. So, since there’s no fiber in the juice, most people will need a little help moving things out. Himalayan or Celtic sea salt is the best product for this type of use.

Sometimes during a cleanse, our bodies pull toxins from our cells and tissues faster than we can eliminate them. The quick release of buildup often leads to some not-so-pleasant detox symptoms like headaches, skin breakout, fatigue and constipation. Don’t worry, though. You can always slow it down or buckle in and bear it. The amount of discomfort is usually tied to the current state of your diet, lifestyle and environment. Even the people that eat really clean diets can experience yucky detox symptoms because we live in an ever-increasing toxic world that has an effect on our bodies. Below are some of my favorite ways to alleviate or lessen these uncomfortable side effects. They’re all optional, so incorporate them on your own, as needed. Simply do whatever feels right for you.

Epsom SaltsEpsom salts are made of the mineral ‘magnesium sulphate’. Both magnesium and sulphate are important nutrients for the body, and are easily absorbed through the skin when added to a bath. An Epsom salt bath draws toxins out of your skin, reduces any inflammation, soothes soar muscles and helps you relax. It’s an easy way to de-stress and get a boost of this much needed mineral!

Simply pour ½ to 1 cup of Epsom salt into your warm bath and let it dissolve. Enjoy a relaxing soak in your bath for about 20 minutes.

Epsom salts can be found at any local drugstore.

Enema BagAn enema is a method to flush waste out of the colon. It’s not such a bad idea when you consider that the average person may have up to 10 pounds or more of non-eliminated waste in the large intestine!

Simply put, an at home enema cleans up the colon and induces bowel movements, leaving you feeling cleaner, lighter and healthier almost immediately. If you tend toward constipation or just want to give your colon a little internal scrub, an enema is a great option for you.

Enema bags can be found at most drugstores or online at www.enemasupply.com.

If you’re curious about the process, watch this fantastic video by Jess Ainscough or read more about specific recipes and how to perform an enema in the FAQ section.

Schedule a ColonicAn even more effective way to cleanse your colon is to make an appointment for a colonic (or a series of colonics) with a colon hydrotherapist. As awkward as it may sound, this is actually quite a pleasant process (given the circumstances). If you’re interested, you can read more about colon hydrotherapy here and my personal experience with colon hydrotherapy right here.

Meditation ResourcesThere’s now science documenting everything from weight loss and addiction recovery to more happiness, stress reduction and increased productivity. There’s simply no doubting that meditation is a powerful practice to have in your life - even if it’s just 5-10 minutes a day.

If you’re a total newbie or you’re someone looking for a little more inspiration check out my meditation resources page. You’ll find a list of free guided meditations with some of the top teachers as well as other books and websites for further education.

Infrared Sauna & Steam BathHeat stimulates organs such as your liver, kidneys and lungs. This kicks them into full-on cleansing mode. Sweating impurities in the sauna or steam bath helps you dump waste faster through the largest organ in your body—your skin. Along with all the toxins you’re shedding, you’re also losing a lot of water. Avoid dehydration by drinking water before and after your session.

Light ExerciseTwenty to 30 minutes of light exercise can feel life-enhancing by removeing stagnation in the body and mind, strengthening the digestive fire, kickstarting metabolism and giving you an overall feeling of lightness and joy. Make sure to keep it light instead of strenuous. The idea here is to build energy and not deplete yourself right. For example, if you usually run a 5 minute mile, extend your run over a 10 minute period of time.

This grocery list is to help you make sure you have all the ingredients you need for your one day juice fast.

During the juice fast you have the option to drink 3-5 juices . This list assumes that you’ll have all five juices. If you end up with left overs, just use them in days following your juice fast. Also, we’re aiming for 16-20oz of juice with each recipe. Depending on your juicer and the size & quality of your fruits and veggies, that amount can vary. You might need to add in a little more. Try to buy local and organic whenever possible.

Here you are. The day of the tune-up. Congratulations for getting yourself here! As you’re settling into the groove of things, try your darnedest to focus on the positive. Instead of seeing food that’s not a part of the cleanse and saying, “I can’t have that”, retrain your brain to say, “I can have that, but I don’t want it right now”. Empower yourself.

The juice that you’ve committed yourself to today will allow you to LISTEN to your body. It’s my experience that we will be guided and healed by listening deeply to what our bodies have to share with us. When you slow down, go within, breathe, stretch, rest, walk, bathe, drink healthy juices and follow the process layed out for you in this juice fast you will hear yourself at a new level.

So many of our struggles are from not listening to our own inner voice, from not TRUSTING it when we do hear it. So, be gentle, be still, be open and make it your job to listen. What are you hearing? That voice is a POWERFUL guide.

ExplorationYou’re doing this detox because your body is holding onto some kind of excess - toxins, waste or weight most likely. But, chances are there are other areas in your life where you’re holding onto excess, too. Our outside experiences mirror our inner experiences. Think about it. Are there clothes in your closet you could give away? Files in the file cabinets that you could get rid of? Old food in the pantry? Dirt and dust around the house? Useless contacts in your phone? This is the perfect time to bust out your cleaning skills and clear out what’s no longer needed. Make room for something new! Spend about a hour cleansing your ‘outer circumstances’ today.

AffirmationI am worthy of vibrant health. I am precious and I have so much to offer.

Body MaintenanceReduce the use of electronics significantly today. Give your mind a chance to cleanse by simply taking in less information from the outside world. Try to give yourself this one day with less so-cializing. This will enhance your ability to enjoy the transformation, deepen your intuition and make space for finding pleasure in the small things.

Day 1

Get off the internet, put down your cell phone, don’t worry about what’s happening on Twitter and Facebook, don’t bombard yourself with ad campaigns, keep your calendar as clear as you can and turn off the tv.

TipSoak up a bit of sun. If you can fit in a whole 30 minutes of sun-kissing that would be great! The vitamin D you’ll get from the sun’s rays will invigorate your body and mind. It’s like power-ing your body with nature’s electricity.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus - two minerals that are important in bone and tooth growth. But, it doesn’t only help you absorb the minerals; vitamin D also helps your body regulate their use. In other words, the vitman helps tell your body whether to deposit these minerals into your bones or take them out of your bones. If more goes out than goes in, your bones can become soft and weak.

With enough exposure to sunlight, your body can produce its own vitamin D. Optimizing vita-min D levels could help you prevent at least 16 different types of cancer including pancreatic, lung, ovarian, prostate and skin cancer.

Upon rising7 a.m.: Time to wake up, beautiful!

7:15 a.m.: Salt Water Flush (optional)

1 quart (1 liter) water• 2 tsp. sea salt or pink salt • Juice from a lemon or lime•

Boil the water to tea drinking temperature. Add in the salt and stir it around until dissolved. Add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice if you require it to offset the taste. Drink the salt water at your own pace over the next 5-30 minutes.

If you don’t have a bowel movement within an hour you’ll need to mix another glass of salt wa-ter (this time 1 tsp of salt in a cup of water). Wait at least an hour before having anything other than water. Stay close to a bathroom until the purge moves through.

8 a.m.: 8 ounces of water with lemon. This stimulates your digestive system and hydrates your tissues so they’re ready to let those toxins go. If you like, sip on this throughout the day.

8:10 a.m.: 20-35 minutes of exercise. Go for hike, dance, run, do yoga, walk the dog - just move your body.

Day 1 Checklist

© Ashley Pitman www.vixi.com

You rock! You’ve come a long way in a pretty short amount of time. And, even more important than that, you’ve changed your life. It may just feel like a few green juices or couple of meat-less meals, but you’ve learned a lot about how to take care of your whole entire self during this process. How great is that? How beautiful and inspiring are you?

Well, I’ve got more news for ya - this is only the beginning of your amazing journey with using food as medicine. What you just learned is completely timeless. You can call on this technique of healing yourself with food anytime you please, whether it be for you or for a cherished family member.

You see, there is a better way than taking a pill for every ill. There is an alternative to feeling icky and gross. There are endless possibilities for your health & happiness - and plants are the prescription.

Now, if you can, you’ll want to ease your way out of the juice fast with a day or so of post-cleans-ing by slowly reintroducing solid food. Steer clear of processed sugar, gluten, meat and dairy as long as you can.

Notice how your body reacts as you reintroduce food groups. This is often when you’ll find out if you have a gluten intolerance or if you need to stay off dairy. Does meat even feel good any-more? Do you enjoy caffeine like you used to? Can you feel the shock as sugar jolts through your system? What foods are most supportive to you?

If you find that you want to stick with more raw foods and vegan meals use vixi.com as a re-source for extra recipes and continued education for participating in your well-being. That’s what it’s there for! I’d love to help you continue to shine brighter.

Thank you for choosing to take this little journey with me. I’m so honored that you did. In fact, I want to hear how it went. I have a short form for recapping your experience, nestling into some cozy closure, and collecting bits & pieces of valuable feedback, for my own skill-sharpen-ing - and my wall o’ praise. It’s short and I would truly appreciate hearing from you. Take five minutes and please fill it out.

I wish you well!
