THE CHRISTIAN ARMOR

We may extract some main ideas from the text in

Ephesians 6:10-18.

1. We are involved in a fight against spiritual powers that are far above us.

2. We need to use the weapons that God has placed at our disposal for this war. Putting on only part of His armor is not enough, we must put on “the whole armor of God” (Ephesians 6:13)

3. This is a universal war, but we must fight it individually. No one may fight it for me; no one may put on the armor of God for me.

“HAVING GIRDED YOUR WAIST WITH TRUTH”

The girdle about the loins held together the soldier’s garments that might otherwise hamper his movements.

The truth spoken of here is more than personal honesty; it is the truth of God as it is lodged in the heart, appropriated, and acted upon.

As long as we cling to this truth—that our salvation rests in Jesus—we can be protected from one of Satan’s most efficient spiritual assaults against us: discouragement.

“HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS”

As the breastplate covers the heart of the soldier, righteousness preserves the life of the believer, and protects the “vital organs” of spiritual life.

Some apply this to the righteousness of Christ that covers the child of God; others, to the Christian’s personal loyalty to principle. Both are essential for successful warfare, and Paul probably had both in mind.

Along with the girdle of truth was the breastplate of righteousness. Thus, in this one verse Paul links the concepts of truth and righteousness.

“Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill? He who walks

uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks the

truth in his heart” (Psalm 15:1-2)When we neglect to do what is right, when we turn our backs on what we know to be the truth, we are easy prey for Satan’s attacks.

“HAVING SHOD YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE”

Hence the gospel, in this instance, is not so much the gospel to be proclaimed, but the gospel that has found lodgment in the heart of the Christian. It is a beautiful and encouraging thought that the warrior in the midst of spiritual conflict can stand firm in peace.Essentially, the gospel is the good news that men need not die, and that is a welcome word to the warrior facing relentless foes. The warrior stands firm on the knowledge of Christ incarnate, crucified, risen, ascended—the heart of the gospel, and the reason for peace.

In Isa. 52:7 and Rom. 10:15 the “feet” and the proclamation of the “gospel of peace” are closely linked, suggesting action, the bearing of the message of good news. In this verse, however, the idea seems to be that of steadfastness in the Christian warfare.

“THE SHIELD OF FAITH”

The Roman shield was a large oblong shield made of wood covered with leather. It measured about four feet by two and a half, large enough to cover the body. “Above all”, we must take this shield to defend ourselves.

Faith stops the arrows of temptation before they become sin in the soul. Temptations and all assaults of the enemy are to be encountered before they reach the vulnerable parts of the spiritual body.

Faith in God, held aloft like a shield, catches them, snuffs out the flame, and makes them fall harmless to the ground.

“THE HELMET OF SALVATION”

The head needs special protection as being a most vital part, the seat of the will and the intelligence.

In 1 Thess. 5:8 the helmet is called the hope of salvation.

In Isaiah 59, it is God who wears the helmet of salvation; here, in Ephesians, the Christian is called upon to receive it.

“For He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on His head; He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak” (Isaiah 59:17)

The present assurance of salvation that is “given” to Christians apart from their own works becomes a powerful weapon for surviving the conflict.

“THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT, WHICH IS THE WORD OF GOD”

The other parts of the armor are defensive only, whereas this is both defensive and offensive.

It is with the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, that the Christian cuts his way through all circumstances.

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12)

HOW DID JESUS USE THIS ARMOR?

Jesus was “full of grace and truth”(John 1:14; see John 8:46)

This was written about Jesus, “You

have loved righteousness and hated wickedness” (Hebrews 1:9; see Luke 23:47; John

5:30)

The Gospel was the center of His ministry, “Jesus went

throughout Galilee… proclaiming the good news of the kingdom” (Matthew 4:23)

He did miracles and calmed storms by faith (Luke 8:25)

He spread healing

wherever He went (Luke

19:9)

His best weapon for both defense and

attack was the Word of God

(Matthew 4:1-11; Matthew 12:3-8;

Matthew 22:41-46)

“PRAYING ALWAYS”Prayer is not another weapon; rather, it is the spirit, the manner, in which the whole armor is to be worn and the battle fought. Paul is here urging it as a perpetual state of mind, a continuous attitude of communion with God (see Luke 18:1; Phil. 4:6; Heb. 4:16)

Perseverance in prayer is not for the purpose, by sheer persistence, of making God change His mind, in some such fashion as a begging child finally extracts what he wants from an unwilling parent. Perseverance in prayer, however, clearly indicates on the part of the suppliant a state of mind that gives God an opportunity to do things He could not safely do for him otherwise (see on Luke 18:1–8)

“BEING WATCHFUL TO THIS END WITH ALL PERSEVERANCE AND SUPPLICATION FOR ALL THE SAINTS”

The saints are to be mutually supported by prayer and fellowship.

Watching is linked with prayer as a constant affair that brings spiritual

strength to the Christian.

In Ephesians 6:18, the emphasis is on praying for others. No doubt, as we

pray for others, we ourselves are spiritually strengthened, and we

ourselves are better armed for the ensuing conflict.

“Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Mark 14:38)

“Do not think that Satan is not doing anything. Do not think that his army is passive. He and his agencies are on the ground today. We are to put on the whole armor of God. Having done all, we are to stand, meeting principalities and powers and spiritual wickedness in high places. And if we have on the heavenly armor, we shall find that the assaults of the enemy will not have power over us. Angels of God will be round about us to protect us. I have the assurance of God that thus it will be”

“Bear in mind that we are placed on vantage ground because Christ has overcome in our behalf. He has made every provision for us to overcome. Divine power stands behind every will resolutely set to do the right. God has provided the armor and the weapons with which each one is to fight. Let the soldiers of Christ put on the whole armor of God and flinch not at Satan’s attacks”
