Every Friday of February and March until Good Friday

Good Friday, March 25

All Catholics 14 years and older are to abstain from all meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent, unless a particular Friday is a solemnity.

All Catholics who are between the ages of 18-59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. (Canon #1252)

Fasting permits one full meal and two lesser meals, which combined are not greater than the full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted.

1st Sunday of Lent "The devil said to him... 'All this will be yours, if you worship me.'" Jesus faced temptation, like we all do. His forty-day fast in the desert wasn't full of supernatural consolation and delight. He was subject to "every temptation" and when the forty days were over, "he was hungry." In other words, he was human. Jesus' divine nature didn't cancel out his human nature. He faced struggles just like we do--both physical and spiritual--in his body and his soul. As we see in today's Gospel, the strategy Jesus used to fight these physical and spiritual battles was to immerse himself in God's word. To silence the devil during this fast, Jesus quoted Scripture. He rooted himself in these eternal truths, relying upon them in his moments of trial. And these sacred words had a dramatic effect. Every time Satan tried to seduce him with a new promise, Jesus responded with a Bible verse. And each time, Satan was silenced and had to try a new angle. Finally, when all the devilish angles had been tried, "the devil departed from him for a time." Jesus won the victory using the weapon of God's word. As we enter into the season of Lent, we can be armed in the same way. We now embark upon a battle against our own pride, sloth, and greed as we commit to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Ultimately, we are working to put God first, instead of bowing down to our selfishness and our desire for comfort. The devil would like nothing more than to see us "worship" him in these ways. But, instead, let's be equipped to proclaim--and to live--the words Jesus himself used: "You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve."

A covenant is a formal agreement between two parties. Assuming both parties enter into the covenant of their own free will, it is a bond that cannot be broken. As time goes on, that covenant will be tested and its validity questioned by skeptics, but it will remain if it is real.

God’s covenant with his people is real. It began with a promise made to Noah and was renewed in the person of Jesus Christ. It has been tested by man through sin and by evil through Jesus’ trials in the desert. But here in 2016, it still remains as strong as ever.

This Lent, take time to rediscover and reflect on this covenant God has with us. Reclaim your baptism and make it a motivating factor in how you live your life. Take the opportunity this Lenten season provides to increase your devotion and spirituality.

You will be tested and you will suffer trials, for life is not always easy. But God has always upheld his part of the agreement. Now is the time to take our part in this covenant more seriously.

The Parish Offices will be closed on Tuesday, ,February 16, and Wednesday, February 17 for a staff ParishSoft Training at Saint Andrew’s Parish in Riverton.

For EMERGENCIES ONLY. Please contact the priest on call at 801-942-7678. Thank you

We are sorry to say that attendance in our religious education classes is at an all-time low. This is most likely due to our lovely weather we have been having. Please keep in mind our dedicated volunteer teachers; neither rain, sleet, wind nor snow shall stop these swift couriers from their appointed ministry. That ministry being to help your children understand their Catholic faith and come to know and love our Creator.

The candidates and catechumens are preparing to become the elect. This will happen with the Rite of sending at the 5:00 Mass on Feb 13th, followed by the Rite of Election at the Cathedral on Feb 20th. Please keep them in your prayers as they continue their Journey toward Easter.
