BRIEFING NOTE - Aboriginal Self Identification
"Recommendation to Inform Community Members"
Interior Health
"Some of you may have been asked some specific questions about your identity when
you have accessed services from Interior Health. Questions include:
1. Are you Aboriginal? First Nations? Metis or Inuit?
2. Are you status or Non-Status
3. Do you live on a reserve?
4. What is your status card number?
5. Would you like to be referred to the Aboriginal Patient Navigator?
"This is the Aboriginal Self-Identification project. It is mandated by the provincial
government and is part of a larger data collection process called Aboriginal
Administrative Data Standard. The Secwepemc Health Caucus (Health Directors and
Chiefs) will be seeking more information on this project. I have many questions myself
including what the data will be used for, and who has access to the data. I will keep you
updated on what we learn about the project. Please talk to your community Health
Director if you have any concerns.
YOU are under NO obligation to answer the questions. You will receive services even if
you refuse to give the information."
For more information please contact your community Health Director Shirley Anderson
and / or the Secwepemc Hub Coordinator at 250 314 6732.

Please contact me for a detailed description of the project. The project is supported by the Adams Lake Indian Band Council and approved by the University of Regina Research Ethics Board.
I want to send a Xyum Kukstemc to all that came out Tuesday February 26, 2013 for the focus group at Little Shuswap Lake Band Hall.
I am honored to have so much elder and community support for my thesis research project. There were so many teachings shared, some good laughs, and thoughts towards the future.
I especially want to thank the two cooks Diane Jules and Clu·istine Eustache, Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band for the meeting space, and the food donations from the Little Shuswap Family Circle and Deborah Hall. As well, a special thank you to the note takers, your help is greatly appreciated. It was powerful having the elders, and young people there.
As requested I will be hosting future sessions, and individual interviews with those interested in participating. :) Kukstemc!!
