Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the STRATFOR Research Internship Position as posted on your website. My knowledge of STRATFOR and its corporate culture lead me to believe that I would be a very good fit within your company. The Research Internship Program will be an ideal way to start a career in intelligence and, more specifically, at STRATFOR.

Helping people obtain the correct information to make informed decisions is a very appealing career to me. My attraction to intelligence is two-fold; first, I have a love of international relations and politics and second, I am constantly seeking new challenges. Living in Russia for two years allowed me to view and challenge my conceptions of Russia and the CIS from an entirely different angle. Living there forced me to ask myself why people and politics existed in the forms that they were practiced there. As an energetic individual, I would not be satisfied working in one static industry for my whole life; intelligence allows for constantly changing projects and a never ending line of individuals with specific needs. Our world has gone through massive changes in the last year and working to understand our rapidly shifting situation and the challenges presented by this would be an ideal career for me.

The current trends and sources of global security are of great interest to me. My main area of expertise, the CIS countries, provides a lot of insight into nearly all the major security issues facing the world today; drug smuggling, rampant corruption and revolution in Central Asia, jihadist terrorism, breakaway states and ethnic conflict in Caucasus, and organized crime, human trafficking and energy issues in the Slavic states. In addition to studying these issues, I took the time to independently visit all of these areas to gain a better personal understanding of the actual ‘on-the-ground’ challenges present in these regions. I visited Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, Moldova, Estonia and the conflict zones of Transnistria, Nagorno-Karabakh and Osh. Speaking Russian proficiently, I obtained a unique viewpoint that has supplemented my understanding of the difficulties that are present in the former Soviet Union. As a result, I have a strong understanding of very significant security issues that governments, NGOs and consultancy groups face.

My academic background has very effectively prepared me for an internship with STRATFOR. I received my MA in Central/East European and Russian Studies from Carleton University with an emphasis in history. In this program, our professors emphasized critical thinking as well as independent research. Not only did I receive good grades, but I also became very comfortable writing and presenting papers and ideas to groups of my peers and professors. In addition to term papers, our tasks often included writing reports with quick turnarounds and giving succinct, accurate updates on current events in class. This training has both drawn me closer to the CIS countries and inspired a desire to constantly research and learn more about the region specifically and in global affairs generally. I have also been attending lectures put on by universities in both Toronto and Ottawa to ensure that my knowledge stays current.

My personal history suggests that I am ideal for the Research Internship Position. As a former national level athlete, I exemplify many of the qualities that you desire in your employees; an obsession with quality, self-improvement, time management skills and maximum efficiency. The passion and

Page 4: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

dedication that I demonstrated for 7 years is exactly what STRATFOR would like within its organization. While training, I learned the importance of working as a team to achieve our goals collectively. My history as a coach has honed my ability to focus on the most important topic that needs to be addressed; ideally, we would follow the plans we had created but often we had to quickly modify our targets to account for more immediate needs. Additionally, working as a sales representative has forced me to approach problems from a business perspective, always asking what the client, or manager, would like from me. Finally, my decision to move to Moscow for two years shows that I both eagerly seize opportunities when they are presented to me and also can adapt to new and challenging situations. I view relocation as an opportunity to explore a new part of the world and a challenge to adapt to exciting new surroundings. While in Moscow, I not only took advantage of the opportunity to learn Russian, but also to volunteer with human-rights NGOs and to extensively tour the former Soviet Union. Although I had always had a strong interest in politics and international relations, living abroad gave me a unique opportunity to expand my knowledge on these topics as they both are viewed in a very different light in Russia by both the press and the average citizen.

I believe it is this combination of life-experience, education and passion that will make me an ideal intern and potential employee with STRATFOR. I am available at anytime to start and enthusiastic about the 40-hour a week opportunity advertised on your site.

Sincerely,

Alex Babaris

STRATFOR’s success lies in its ability to objectively and accurately interpret complex global events.

Whereas so many people and organizations today view the world from the comfort of their ideological bubbles,

STRATFOR seeks true understanding of the nuances of global events. It is for this reason that I’m so interested in

pursuing a career with STRATFOR. I hold a deep-seated curiosity for understanding why and how the events that

shape nations occur. It is my hope that working at STRATFOR will allow me to satisfy that curiosity while also

contributing to the creation of a quality product I can take pride in.

As an intern, STRATFOR will benefit from my passion and dedication, which I believe is reflected in my

academic career. My curiosity for understanding political events led me to pursue a degree in Political Science with a

minor in Economics. Because politics and economics are so intertwined, being equipped with tools from both

disciplines is immensely helpful when it comes to the critical analysis of geopolitics. I have not shied away from

taking many writing-intensive courses. My professors have praised my ability to write clear, concise, and well-

organized papers. A rigorous course load that emphasizes critical thinking over rote memorization has benefitted

me greatly and I look forward to transferring the skills I have learned to STRATFOR.

My preferred area of interest lies in the Middle East; taking courses in Arabic and Islam has furthered my

understanding of the region and I am always eager to learn more. The Arab Spring has been especially fascinating to

watch for anyone interested in geopolitics. It has reignited the debate over the viability of democracy in the region

and the democratization process. There are strong pro-democracy movements in unexpected places such as Libya,

Syria, and Egypt; there are also strong tribal loyalties, radical Islamist movements, and powerful figures who wish to

maintain the status quo. Popular political theories such as Francis Fukuyama’s “end of history” and the dominance

of Western liberal democracy or Samuel Huntington’s “clash of civilizations” are being played out before our eyes.

Whichever direction the region goes, now is an excellent time to be working at STRATFOR. I look forward to

being able to commit 40 hours per week for the full length of the internship from January to May. Thank you for

your consideration.

Statement of Interest Amy vanGoethem 1 December 2011

I am writing to express my interest in the Research Internship Program at STRATFOR in

Austin, Texas for the spring of 2012. I am a recent graduate of DePaul University where I completed

my studies in Political Science in November of this year. I am passionate about global affairs and have

experience helping organizations such as yours meet their goals through excellence in policy analysis,

prepared communications and in-depth research. I believe there could be a strong fit between my

skills and the needs of STRATFOR.

My academic background has provided me with a solid understanding of the theories of

international relations and research methodology. I am keenly interested in both international and

domestic affairs. My internship experience has focused on European affairs to date. I am a

knowledgeable researcher and a great writer and as an intern with the European Parliament I

researched topics ranging from the completion of the European Single Market to tourism policy and

prepared thorough, concise and persuasive reports for MEP Louis Grech of Malta. I was responsible

for a range of activities including policy research and speech writing. While abroad I studied European

affairs at the University of Leuven in Leuven, Belgium providing me with a comprehensive

understanding of the inner workings of the European Union. While studying the European Union, I

gained the ability to analyze complex issues and synthesize a succinct and thorough report. This

experience has energized me to continue my focus on the intersection of global and local affairs. I am

well versed in the use of technology in conducting research including experience working with

databases and the Microsoft Office suite. STRATFOR is somewhere I believe could both benefit from

my skills and abilities and help me continue to develop as a professional.

I am available to work full time starting 2 January 2012. I very much look forward to working

with you this spring. Thank you for your time and consideration.

STRATFOR  Research  Internship  Statement  of  Purpose

Ben  Abraham

I  am  writing  to  apply  for  STRATFOR’s  Research  Internship  position  for  Spring  2012.  It  is  a  position  I  am  extremely  interested  in,  and  one  that  I  will  be  an  excellent  candidate  for.    This  position  appeals  to  me  because  it  is  very  relevant  to  my  future  career  aspirations  and  I  am  passionate  about  the  work  it  will  involve.  I  am  deeply  interested  in  international  affairs  and  to  work  for  a  professional,  established  intelligence  agency  like  STRATFOR  would  be  an  amazing  opportunity  for  me.  In  the  future,  I  hope  to  work  in  the  field(s)  of  international  intelligence  and  international  diplomacy.  The  research  work  that  I  will  undertake  as  part  of  the  internship  will  not  only  be  intellectually  stimulating,  in  the  long  term  the  skills  I  will  practice  will  be  highly  beneficial  for  my  personal  development  and  career  aspirations.  In  the  short  term,  the  internship  will  beneficial  for  my  academic  studies.  To  be  able  to  hone  my  research  and  writing  skills  by  working  for  a  professional  organization  will  be  an  invaluable  experience  that  will  help  be  the  best  performing  student  I  can  be.  Also,  having  the  name  ‘STRATFOR’  on  my  resume  will  add  great  strength  and  repute  to  it  and  is  something  that  I  will  be  proud  of.      I  am  would  be  a  suitable  research  intern  for  STRATFOR  because  I  possess  a  number  of  important  relevant  characteristics.  Firstly,  my  deep  passion  and  interest  in  international  issues  and  understanding  the  world  around  me  means  that  I  will  be  engaged  and  invested  in  my  work  as  an  intern.  It  will  not  be  drag.  Secondly,  I  am  a  meticulous  worker  who  pays  great  attention  to  detail,  two  things  that  I  believe  are  essential  to  producing  quality  research  and  writing.  Thirdly,  I  thrive  in  diverse  and  dynamic  environments.  When  I  am  surrounded  by  other  passionate,  talented  and  innovative  people  I  become  extremely  motivated  and  work  at  an  even  higher  level  while  contributing  to  the  stimulating  atmosphere.  Coming  from  New  Zealand,  I  will  add  to  the  diverse  team  at  STRATFOR  and  be  able  to  bring  a  unique  perspective  to  international  issues  that  I  believe  will  benefit  the  STRATFOR  team.    I  also  have  a  working  knowledge  of  the  Spanish  language  from  4  college  semesters  of  study.    Coming  into  an  internship  with  STRATFOR,  I  would  bring  relevant  experience  that  comes  from  both  my  studies  and  my  extracurricular  involvement  with  the  P3  Foundation.  During  my  two  years  so  far  as  an  international  politics  student  I  have  been  constantly  improving  and  refining  my  research  and  writing  schools.  While  I  can  certainly  still  improve  and  I  hope  an  internship  with  STRATFOR  will  aid  in  this,  I  have  reached  a  level  where  I  can  consistently  produce  quality  pieces  of  work.  This  was  demonstrated  in  my  most  recent  semester  where  I  received  A+  grades  for  both  of  my  research  essays,  on  Chinese  and  U.S.  foreign  policy  respectively.    Outside  of  my  normal  studies,  I  have  also  been  involved  in  some  extracurricular  activities  that  would  be  beneficial  to  an  internship  with  STRATFOR.  Most  pertinently,  my  involvement  in  the  P3  Foundation  has  given  me  experience  writing  and  researching  for  an  organization  rather  than  purely

Page 12: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

academically.  P3  Foundation  is  a  youth  run  international  development  organization  in  New  Zealand  and  I  have  now  produced  a  number  of  documents  for  them  ranging  from  minutes  to  recruitment  documents  and  reports  to  educational  resources.      I  will  be  arriving  in  Austin  on  the  4th  of  January  2012  in  preparation  for  the  Spring  semester  so  would  be  able  to  begin  my  internship  shortly  after  that.  If  successful  in  applying  for  this  internship,  I  hope  to  receive  course  credit  for  it  with  the  University  of  Texas’  Department  of  Government.  So  will  require  STRATFOR  to  communicate  via  me  with  the  internship  coordinator  to  make  sure  that  it  meets  all  the  requirements.  I  cannot  confirm  my  schedule  for  the  semester,  but  it  is  likely  most  of  my  classes  will  held  during  the  late  morning  or  early  afternoon  so  internship  hours  would  need  to  work  around  that.    I  would  like  to  thank  STRATFOR  for  reading  this  statement  and  considering  my  application  for  the  advertised  research  internship.  If  anyone  at  STRATFOR  would  like  additional  information  about  myself,  I  would  be  more  than  happy  to  oblige

I am a recent graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. At Luther, I studied

Economics, Political Science and History. My accomplishments at Luther put me in a superb

position to participate in the type of research and problem solving that Stratfor undertakes. At

college I studied a wide range of topics, from Middle-East policy to the economics of

development, all of which are topics that have an impact on daily events around the world. It was

through the studying of these topics, drawing from many differing sources, where I was able to

develop excellent research skills and an understanding that many of the major world events can

be attributed to one or more of these three factors.

It was through these abilities and accomplishments that I was able to gain acceptances to

the International Economics Honor Society as well as winning the William G. Seabold

Scholarship from the Economics and Business Department at Luther. While attending college I

was able to travel widely and study many issues firsthand that affected the countries I traveled in.

These were topics such as: traveling through the Amazon rainforest where I spent a month

studying the politics and economics of land use and to Egypt where I studied the relationship of

different religious and political communities. This was a year before the Arab Spring, so when

the unrest started I had a better understanding of some of the underlying factors that lead to the

conflict there. Traveling has enabled me to gain firsthand knowledge of many different regions

of the world, which has been useful in much of the research that I have participated in the past

and I know this will be a useful skill if I were to be given this opportunity.

Since graduation I have continued to travel, going to the Brazilian farm frontier in June

and spending August in South Africa. I have also spent much of my time working on my

family’s farm in southern Minnesota. It is from here, that I have developed my core values of

hard work and attention to detail. On the farm I contributed to my family’s hog and grain

operations including using equipment with GPS mapping technology. If you were to speak to

any of my former employers you would find that I am hard working, and quick to learn new

things. Although I have less experience in the professional world, the knowledge and experience

that I have gained thus far, will serve me well and make me a good candidate for this internship.

This internship would be an unparalleled opportunity for my career development. Stratfor

provides a unique service to it costumers and my goal in this internship is to better understand

the way in which Stratfor uses open source intelligence to analyze current events. This internship

will aid in my future plans of furthering my education and starting a career in international

affairs. I know that my past experience, along with my education and critical thinking skills will

enable me to generate solutions to problems that I am asked to research and address.

To Whom It May Concern: As a first-generation American of Iranian and Colombian descent, I am personally connected with two countries that have historically faced unique socio-economic and geo-political challenges. As a result, the field of international affairs has continually held particular significance to me throughout my life. I recently completed my graduate degree in International Relations and I am seeking a position that utilizes my particular skills, multicultural experience, and personal interests to address the myriad challenges facing the Middle East and North African (MENA) and Latin American regions. My undergraduate studies were dedicated to sales and marketing; however, from my experience of visiting Iran in 2006, a personal trip to explore my roots, my interest realigned towards issues of international affairs. Upon my return I decided to pursue a Master in International Relations at IE Business School in Madrid, Spain as a first step into this arena. At IE I focused my research on the Middle East. My thesis explored the significance of social media during the Green Revolution in Iran after the 2009 presidential election and I received high honors. Courses in politics and culture in the Middle East, Africa’s development issues, international financial markets, and challenges to democracy in Latin America provided opportunities to research and analyze the underlying obstacles facing the international community. In addition to my education, I have experience working in a region familiar with political and economic obstacles. In 2009 I volunteered in Palestine at an NGO to teach children and women English and internet skills, enabling their stories of life in the West Bank to be more widely read. By providing an additional tool for communication I empowered the local community with a sliver of hope and offered some skills needed for bottom-up development. My position at the Bilateral U.S.-Arab Chamber of Commerce required me to understand the opportunities and challenges facing the U.S. and MENA region. Encouraged to think creatively, I collaborated with my team on the various sectors we served and the current political climate to develop events and programs that contributed to the organization’s rapid expansion. STRATFOR can provide a unique and invaluable opportunity to enter the field of international affairs. One of my objectives is to use this experience to develop professional skills and relationships that can serve throughout my career. By working among leaders and experts with unique insights into political, economic, and social developments I aim to increase my knowledge of the global challenges arising in our new world order. I also look forward to using this opportunity to better understand and identify the opportunities that lie within each challenge. My personal, professional and academic experience combined with my passion to address today’s challenges gives me a unique perspective on international affairs. Over the years, I have gathered an intimate knowledge of socio-economic and geo-political regional dynamics, especially regarding the MENA region. Using my perspective I could make significant and valuable contributions to STRATFOR’s research team. Sincerely, Cepee Tabibian

Christopher Daniel Cantu STRATFOR Internship Program

Statement of Purpose

Christopher Daniel Cantu

December 2011

STRATFOR is an organization that uses human intelligence, along with powerful analysis based

on geopolitics, to produce penetrating explanations of world events. STRATFOR’s approach

does not cater primarily and exclusively to what has happened, but rather STRATFOR provides

a broader more comprehensive approach to delivering analytically rigorous predictions of what

will happen. As a private intelligence firm in the 21st century, STRATFOR’s unique insights

into political, economic, and military developments have become an indispensable component in

enabling STRATFOR Members to reduce risks and identify opportunities in every region of the

globe.

To me, interning at STRATFOR is an opportunity to help inform STRATFOR Members about

what events in the world actually mean. I have applied to STRATFOR’s Research Internship

Program because I believe as a private intelligence organization; STRATFOR is dedicated to

discerning what is important objectively without ideology, partisan agenda, or a specific policy

prescription. From monitoring stabilization and reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan to

analyzing counter-piracy activities off the Horn of Africa, STRATFOR intelligence services

provide un-paralleled insight into what events matter, what they mean, and how they will evolve.

I understand that as an intern inside STRATFOR I will be responsible for “play[ing] an integral

role in the gathering, processing and dissemination of open source intelligence (OSINT)” which

is “central to STRATFOR’S unique methodology” (STRATFOR Internship Program). As a

2011 intern for the Division of Political-Military Affairs (DPMA) at the Hudson Institute, I have

gained valuable experience with all these responsibilities in the OSINT context.

As an intern for the DPMA, I typically researched current and future security issues, wrote both

short memorandums and longer papers, analyzed public policy debates, and attended public and

private briefings. For example, for several months, I worked on a project where I employed an

integrated analysis of the evolving relations between the Iraqi Government and NATO’s

Training Mission in Iraq (NTM-I) leading up to U.S military withdrawal. To convey the nature

Page 22: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

Christopher Daniel Cantu STRATFOR Internship Program

of the changing relations between the two institutions, I had to analyze NATO’s Structured

Cooperation Framework (SCF) with Iraq as well as NATO-Iraqi joint military exercises to show

how NATO’S operational capabilities have shifted from developing only Training and Education

Centers for Iraqi Security Forces; to include naval and air force leadership training, defence

reform, institution-building and standardized officer education and preparation. My research with

the DPMA has prepared me to analyze and monitor significant current events in NATO areas of

operations while also exposing me to how security institutions use political and military

resources to enhance security in the region and further promote state-building.

Ultimately, I expect that an internship with STRATFOR will constitute a challenging

opportunity in a stimulating work environment. The experience I will receive from

STRATFOR’s Research Internship Program will fully utilize and develop my analytical and

research skills, while preparing me for a career as a STRATFOR strategic and tactical analyst

where I hope to help employ the vast array of STRATFOR’s resources in order to augment

penetrating explanations of world events for both the foreseeable and unforeseeable future.

Beyond my experiences, I sense that I would be a valuable intern because I am an attentive and

level-headed individual who knows how to conduct research in a timely manner. Attached to

this application is my resume for your review. I am confident that my diverse skills and

experience, in addition to my ambitious personality, will prove to be a valuable asset to

STRATFOR. I look forward to the opportunity.

Statement of Purpose

I recall as a child spending hours at a time behind an atlas or an encyclopedia. My favorite hobby

was to envision the parts of the world that I could not see from my home, and with my acceptance into

Duke University, I was able to begin to turn my childhood fascination into realized experiences. I

studied foreign languages and literature while making a conscious attempt, outside of class, to

supplement my university career with new life experiences. I was drawn to opportunities to view society

from new perspectives, and my four years in college included: a semester abroad in Madrid, a year as a

commuter student on an organic farm in North Carolina, and a summer working with a startup

agricultural venture in Sierra Leone, West Africa. The motivation for each of my major professional

decisions was a love of observing the inner workings of human communities and organizations; and the

outcome of my experiences, I believe, is a sense of adaptability and quickness in understanding new

systems. As I now seek to further define a career path, I believe that STRATFOR’s research internship

program is the ideal location for me to continue my work, for the opportunity it will provide me to apply

my knowledge and experience to the field of global intelligence analysis.

I will come to the internship with positive energy and an extremely strong academic record,

having graduated from Duke in May with high honors and elective coursework in science, mathematics,

and history. I will additionally bring five months’ experience as a research assistant at Northern Illinois

University, where my liberal arts background lent me the tools to complete numerous writing tasks,

while my experience in other academic disciplines provided me the context to conduct thorough

research in technical areas. Between June and November of this year I helped my supervisor increase the

publication output of his lab by over 100%, as I contributed to literature reviews and textual edits for

several scientific manuscripts either submitted or accepted for publication. I additionally co-authored

both an article for the Journal of Sport Behavior and an abstract set to be presented at the 2012

American College of Sports Medicine Conference. These assignments not only advanced my experience

in technical writing but also tested my ability to acquire a completely novel skill, as I also played an

integral part in the development and execution of a procedure for a salivary biomarker assay through

which the data for the abstract was collected. In short, my initial months since college graduation have

included a strong introduction to formal research. Although the focus of my work at NIU was on

exercise psychology and physiology, I believe that the skills I drew upon in each of my assignments—

specifically, gathering data and condensing it into an easily understood and deliverable form—will be

Page 25: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

directly applicable to the analysis of open source intelligence that STRATFOR carries out as its

business.

As I move forward from my experience at NIU, I feel particularly motivated to hone my research

skills in STRATFOR’s internship program for the interest I have already mentioned in global affairs.

The company’s focus on geopolitical research coincides directly with the set of interests I explored as an

undergraduate, and I am eager to apply my knowledge in a professional setting. I have substantial

background in the languages and regional affairs of Southern Europe and Hispanic America in

particular, having studied Italian and Spanish at the university level. Additionally, I have a very strong

interest in the African continent, sustained by the ongoing relationships I formed with colleagues and

friends during a summer internship with BeeFreed Limited, an African-owned startup agricultural

venture operating in Freetown, Sierra Leone. During the summer of 2010 I worked alongside Americans

and Sierra Leoneans to develop a beekeeping training package that was pitched to the NGO Concern

Worldwide for an apicultural project in a rural section of the country. While I worked on numerous

aspects of the assignment, my unique contribution to the package was the BeeFreed Apiary Start-Up Kit

Manual, a simple-English text detailing the fundamentals of putting to use the company’s uniquely

designed hives in rural West Africa. BeeFreed’s subsequent sale of five beehives to the NGO

represented the company’s first official sale. I consider the summer I spent in Freetown invaluable for

the immersion it represented within one of the world’s least developed nations, as well as for the

experience it gave me negotiating cultural barriers to establish standards of professionalism and achieve

a tangible goal. The internship was inherently rewarding, and the perspectives it allowed me to gain on

life and business in Sierra Leone will inevitably continue to inform my understanding of global affairs

and intelligence.

With a background in research and an international perspective, then, I am eager to continue my

training at STRATFOR, with the objective of exploring a career in intelligence analysis. As I am

relocating to Austin from Illinois in late November, I will be immediately available to work at the

company’s main office at the internship’s anticipated start date and will have no issue continuing

through May. I am available for an interview scheduled at the company’s convenience and am happy to

furnish any additional information that may be found useful.

file:///C|/Users/Matthew%20Powers/Desktop/Intern%20Resumes%20Spring%202012/Batch%202/Derron%20Matthews%202.txt[12/5/2011 4:44:52 PM]

I've always lived in one of the more secluded and bucolic areas of Pennsylvania. I'm a part-time employee of a family owned and operated textbook buyback company. Despite my seemingly isolated and, perhaps, all too ordinary nature, I envision my future as one who analyzes trends and observes the consequences of individual actors on a global stage. I believe I'm capable of forecasting events that occur in world affairs by recognizing policy decisions and the philosophical roots of such policies. I believe I can develop a world view by focusing on the various institutions that exist and understanding how they relate to one another. I'm looking to broaden the practical, analytic skills required to assess and project events that do and may occur in international affairs. I believe participating in Stratfor's research internship program will make all the difference to achieving these ends.

It is my interest in foreign affairs that motivates me to intern for Stratfor. As a college graduate, I understand how integral an academic background is in building a career that relates to geopolitics. Simultaneously, I am determined to acquire the "real world experience" necessary in constructing such a career. Surrounding myself with the esteemed professionals at Stratfor and performing tasks related to processing intelligence or learning the firm's methodology act as invaluable assets.

I also understand that Stratfor seeks applicants who have, "skillsets...from multiple fields such as international affairs, military science, economics, history, literature, philosophy, mathematics, computer science and engineering." In May of this year, I graduated magna cum laude from West Chester University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in international affairs and a minor in philosophy. Both of these fields have been instrumental in shaping my understanding of geopolitics. I have relayed my understanding, as well as my philosophy, in articles that have been published in Capitalism Magazine.

Through these articles, not only do I demonstrate my knowledge of geopolitics and philosophy, but also of history and military science. When North Korea began the shelling of Yeonpyeong island nearly a year ago, I wrote about how prolonged appeasement of the North Korean regime and America's perceived appeasement elsewhere encourages hostile nation states to act aggressively. I've criticized America's policies in regards to the growing threat of Iran. Following the fall of Hosni Mubarak's regime in Egypt, I hinted that the Muslim Brotherhood would exploit the opportunity to increase its power and encourage political Islam elsewhere. I correlated President Obama's foreign policy vision with Wilsonian Idealism. I argued that his administration championed the multilateralism of the United Nations over the United States Congress.

The administrator of Capitalism Magazine has been impressed with my opinions and analysis thus far. Of the nine articles I've had published, three have been featured on the website's homepage. The website administrator has also invited me to contribute to his blog, Dollars & Crosses.

I hope that, given the opportunity, Stratfor might be as equally impressed with what I can offer as an intern. I do not have the lengthiest resume or the most prestigious academic credentials. What I do have is an unyielding determination to acquire the skills to become the next foreign affairs analyst or forecaster and the basic framework to proceed accordingly. I seek to understand the methodology of data collection and its dissemination through actual experience. The research internship Stratfor provides can be a unique first step to achieving my long term goals. I hope to hear from a representative soon.

With regards,

Derron Matthews

Anticipated start date: January 09, 2012Anticipated schedule: 24 hour work week over a four month period. I intend to pursue paid work to assist with my cost of living expenses.

Some of the most defining memories of my life came when I was 10 years old.

I was with my family visiting Lebanon and Syria in the summer of 1999. My mother

was a Lebanese citizen born in Saudi Arabia and her parents were both Lebanese

citizens born in Syria. It was my first trip abroad and at that age I had no idea what

to expect. Three memories always stand out to me when I think back to that trip.

The first memory came immediately when I stepped out of the Beirut

airport. Thousands of people were swarming the streets chanting in Arabic. I heard

gunshots in the distance and saw what looked like fireworks illuminating the city.

For some reason though, the crowd didn’t seem threatening and when our hosts

arrived they explained that a Lebanese club basketball team had just won the Asian

cup. Friendly or not, that first moment had me on edge for the rest of the trip.

The second memory I had was a repeated one. We traveled all over Lebanon,

so we were in our car much of the trip. Every few miles armed soldiers at

checkpoints would stop us and inspect our car. This was the first time in my life I

had been exposed to men holding assault rifles at such close proximity to me. My

grandfather sensed the trepidation in the car and assured us in his thick Arabic

accent that the soldiers should make us “feel secure”. It turned out though that these

men were in fact Syrian soldiers occupying Lebanon and had been there for over

two decades, since the civil war.

The third memory I have is of standing in the middle of a national park

surrounded by towering cedar trees. I remember walking with my father, until I

heard an almost deafening sound above me. Quickly I looked up and saw two

military jets flying overhead. The jets had made a sonic boom and my grandfather

explained to me that this happens very often and that these are Israeli fighter jets.

These memories have stayed with me for my whole life and are what first led to my

interest in International Relations, specifically Middle Eastern Politics and Security

Studies.

This past May I graduated from Rhodes College with a degree in International

Relations. I took my experiences from my childhood and eagerly applied them to

Page 30: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

my undergraduate career. From the very beginning I knew my interests were in

Middle Eastern Politics and National Security. Over time, as I grew more

knowledgeable about international relations my interests evolved. However I

almost always applied these interests to Security Studies. After, taking the required

classes that all International Studies programs require we were encouraged to

follow our own track by choosing a concentration. This gave me the opportunity to

take five classes that directly had to do with Security Studies; these classes were U.S.

National Security, Population and National Security, Security Studies, American

Foreign Policy and Terrorism and National Security. I was also able to supplement

those five courses with a class on Middle Eastern Politics and a class on the U.S.

Intelligence Community.

One of the most valuable skills I took away from my degree was the ability to

look at certain events over our history and have a better understanding of why they

occurred, or look at potential flashpoints and forecast what is likely to happen. For

my Senior Thesis, I wrote on an event that I had almost no prior knowledge of, the

2008 Georgia-Russia War. Before this thesis, I was of the mind that wars of

aggression seemed to be a thing of the past and that the world had entered into a

new era of asymmetry. After studying this event more closely, it was clear that state

on state violence is still not only a very real possibility, but it happened only three

years ago. It was an incredible thing to be able to look at this nine-day war and pull

together all the different pieces that led up to it and the rippling effect it had on the

entire world, specifically NATO.

On top of my academic experience, I also spent my summer of 2010 in

Washington, D.C. working on Capitol Hill for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. The status

of a summer intern is on the low end of the spectrum, but it does provide some

incredible and unique opportunities. One of those opportunities was the chance to

attend Senate Committees on a daily basis. I turned my attention to the Armed

Services, Foreign Relations, and Homeland Security committees. I was able to see

first hand the firestorm surrounding the firing of General McChrystal and the

ensuing nomination of General Petraeus. I sat there and witnessed a number of the

Page 31: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

New START treaty hearings, as Senators questioned leaders from three of the top

laboratories in the United States, such as Los Alamos, on their expert views of the

treaty.

STRATFOR offers an incredible opportunity for me to continue my interest in

International Relations. Also, with my recent graduation I am looking to take the

next step in a possible career and STRATFOR would be the perfect way for me to

take a step in the right direction. Because I have experience on the subject from the

academic side and the political side, learning about International Relations from the

private side would offer me an invaluable lesson as I go forward. I am currently

living in Austin, Texas and taking LSAT prep classes for a February test, while

working on Law School applications. I am available to start at anytime.

Currently, I am a graduate student studying international affairs at Texas A&M

University’s Bush School of Government and Public Service and will graduate with

concentrations in China Studies and Intelligence as an Instrument of Statecraft in May of 2014. I

aim to supplement these specialties with a mastery of the Russian language, of which I have

already attained a limited working proficiency from four years of study as an undergraduate and

a year of living in Obninsk, Russia. My goal is to eventually work as an analyst specializing in

the interactions among former Soviet Union countries, preferably those related to international

crime. For the 2012-2013 school year, I will attend Moscow State University, during which time

I hope to extend my STRATFOR internship and work from abroad.

Past extracurricular studies have equipped me with pertinent skills I can utilize for

STRATFOR. I attended the courses Basic Elements of Criminal Intelligence and Criminal

Intelligence Analysis in Canada which were hosted by the Toronto Police Department. Working

alongside men and women from all levels of both Canadian and American law enforcement

agencies, I learned to create link analysis visuals, flowcharts, and criminal activity timelines

from police reports and to present the findings in a polished intelligence briefing. In addition, the

course Using the Internet as an Investigative Research Tool offered by the company Toddington

International taught me to exploit the Internet as an open source of intelligence by mining the

Deep Web for information.

Through pleasure reading as well as courses at school I have garnered a thorough

understanding of the intelligence cycle, the Central Intelligence Agency’s recruitment cycle, and

have become familiar with foreign intelligence agencies.

As an intern at STRATFOR, I will devote my assiduousness and ever-developing

knowledge of both Russia and various aspects of national security to upholding the revered

quality of analysis this intelligence agency produces. I am available to work full-time as an intern

in Austin this coming spring and, as stated above, hope to continue my internship in Russia next

year.

An interest in political affairs has been one of the constants in my life. In

elementary school I watched the McNeal/Lehrer report on PBS with my parents.

Even before I could read I would eat breakfast with my dad and “read” the

newspaper, albeit sometimes upside down. Many of my early memories correspond

to major events, especially the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the early 1990’s.

One of my best friends later was a Bosnian Serb who fled with his family during that

time, and his stories gave me greater insight into something I could hardly

comprehend when it happened. In high school I made two student exchange trips to

Germany, and my family hosted exchange students, one of whom lived with us for

my junior year. During that time I became fascinated with European history and the

history of the Cold War. I read everything from old textbooks to John le Carré

novels. I received an International Baccalaureate Diploma in high school; my senior

year IB research paper was about the evolution of America’s cold war policy in

relation to George Kennan’s original containment theory.

To expand upon my interest in international affairs, I fashioned an

International Studies major at Southwestern University through the political science

department. This gave me an opportunity to draw from varying fields to create a

more comprehensive educational experience. I double-majored in German and

supplemented my studies with history and French courses. My capstone projects for

Page 35: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

both majors utilized concepts of national narrative, cultural memory and identity

creation. My political science project offered an explanation for the violent

demonstrations across Hungary in 2006, and my German project delved into the

cultural and political possibilities of transnational literature for immigrant

communities in Germany. As exciting as the theoretical work of the latter was,

however, I found myself drawn to the practical, real-world statistics and data of the

former.

My junior year I studied in Germany, one semester in a program focused on the

European Union and the second semester attending university in Trier. The EU

program involved intensive coursework combined with trips to EU member states

where we met with politicians, analysts, and professors to discuss the issues facing

the European Union. The speakers were refreshingly candid. The travel and

discussions granted insights that cannot be gained from classroom experience

alone. For example, in Budapest I noticed a large number of construction projects

with no workers present and thought nothing of it. After meeting a professor at the

Central European University, however, I learned that Hungary had grossly

overestimated the economic growth that would come from joining the EU, and then

the economy stalled. The stagnant construction across the city was a pervasive and

visible reminder of Hungary’s attempts at integration into the EU.

I also sought out some less traditional destinations, such as the multiethnic

housing developments in the Clichy suburb of Paris, and an antiauthoritarian

commune in Freiburg im Breisgau where I got into a discussion about a developing

state law that would restrict free assembly. Some of my most interesting

Page 36: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

experiences were going to cafes and bars in countries like Estonia and Slovakia and

talking to locals. They always opened up when they realized I wasn’t just a tourist.

On election night in 2008 I was the only American and only student on stage in a

podium discussion about the American elections at Freiburg’s university before an

audience of fifteen hundred people.

Between semesters I interned at the Carl-Schurz-Haus in Freiburg im Breisgau,

which is part of a network of institutions established at the end of World War II to

rebuild cultural interchange between the United States and Germany. The

responsibilities included office administrative work, but also the opportunities to

plan, advertise and work on lectures and events, host dignitaries from the embassy

in Berlin, and eventually manage an event independently.

After graduation I returned to Germany on a Fulbright grant to teach English and

continue my research on transnational politics and literature. I requested to be sent

to Saxony because of its eastern bloc history and the opportunity to be exposed to

the distinct Saxon culture. I also specialized in working with students of immigrant

background as part of Fulbright’s Diversity Program. In Leipzig and Grimma, where

I lived and worked, I was exposed to the legacy of the German Democratic Republic

and worked alongside people who had trained and taught under a completely

different regime and curriculum. I also learned a great deal in Grimma’s rural setting

about the Saxon culture and dialect and the post-reunification problems facing small

towns in the “new states”. Besides being an opportunity to understand the

complicated relationship Germans hold with their past regimes, the year was also a

chance to better understand perceptions of American culture and politics from

Page 37: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

abroad. Rather than socializing mainly with other Americans or exchange students, I

lived and socialized with Germans and found that for many I was the sole

representative of my country.

Next year I will attend graduate school to study international affairs and policy

analysis. What Stratfor does is exactly the type of career I want to pursue, and the

internship would be a great learning experience. I believe my education and

experience provide a strong background for the intern role. The two years that I

lived in Germany and traveled in Europe were often challenging and sometimes

adventurous, but they gave me a broader understanding of different political

systems, cultures, and social structures and how they interact.

My schedule is open. I teach tennis part time and tutor German; neither job

would conflict with the internship. I hope to have the opportunity to learn more

about the position.

The advent of the Internet and the consolidation of media sources have offered a challenging opportunity for global intelligence firms today. Our current environment is full of information that can be misinterpreted by an inexpert person and potentially compromise the strategic forecasting of a particular situation. Businesses, institutions and individuals must rely on accurate intelligence to maintain a competitive advantage going into the future. It has become impossible to make consistent strategic decisions based on mainstream media because it is passively gained information that is offered to a large group of people at minimal cost and effort. If one wants intelligence, especially global intelligence, the task requires focused research and a creative application of specialized skills. I want to be a part of Stratfor because it is taking on the exigent task of providing reliable intelligence in a world of unreliable sources.

I had the privilege of attending St. Edward’s University, which gave me an incredibly well rounded and intensive education. My undergraduate curriculum emphasized research projects and I was often required to defend my finding in the form of a debate or class presentation. I have been able to develop the keen ability to look past the advertised story and search for the real elements of a given situation. I received an education in International Business but also focused on Latin America. I studied the Spanish Language as well as Latin American history, literature and economics. I am very interested in furthering my experience in Latin America and recently traveled to Guatemala to immerse myself in the culture and become fluent in the language. I attended two Spanish language schools in the highlands of Guatemala that focused on the political and cultural realities of the country as a supplement to my language studies. I attended conferences on the social, economic and political situations in Guatemala as well a briefing on the narco-trafficking that is currently plaguing Guatemala. While I was in Guatemala, I witnessed the elections for the new President, Otto Pérez Molina. I received an analysis of the elections as well as a forecast for the future of Guatemala by a Guatemalan political organization based out of Guatemala City. I even experienced being robbed at gunpoint by a masked bandit in the mountains outside of San Pedro La Laguna. My experiences in Guatemala taught me that people live very differently outside the U.S. and this manifests itself in the political and socio-economic culture of different countries. The integrated study of history, economics, international culture, ethics and computer sciences will provide a strong foundation for gathering information objectively and delivering comprehensive intelligence.

My work experience covers a diverse array of professions including manager of an energy efficiency start-up company and professional golf caddie. I am currently working with state and local agencies through the DOE Weatherization Assistance Program as an energy efficiency inspector. The program received increased funding through ARRA and I have been exposed to the complex process of subsidized energy programs through federal legislation and regulation. I have become familiar with the technical aspects of the energy efficiency industry as well as the alternative energy industry. As I have experienced through my career, the

Page 42: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

information gathered from a CEO of a fortune 100 company on the golf course and a refugee family struggling to survive on government subsidized living can vary greatly. My experience communicating with people from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds can be an asset for the company. I feel confident that I will be able to provide intelligence services to a wide range of clients from the individual investor to the large business or institution.

I am available to begin with Stratfor immediately and my work schedule is extremely flexible. As an independent contractor, I am able to schedule work around my responsibilities in the RIP. Please review my application and see if my skills and experience could be of service to Stratfor. Thank you for your time and consideration.

STRATFOR Research Internship Program – Jennifer E. Goode.

I am interested in pursuing an internship with STRATFOR because of the unique and valuable experience provided. As a recent graduate of St. Edward’s University, studying international relations and French while there, I am seeking both careers and graduate school opportunities in global affairs. Because STRATFOR publishes intelligence on events around the world, I believe that participating in that research process would be an incredible and in-depth learning experience of geopolitical issues.

During my four years of study at St. Edward’s University, I have been able to hone my focus within the broad field of international relations into specific concentrations and motives. I have a wide range of interests regarding global studies, including human rights and international law, international communication, the international political economy, peace and conflict resolution, and international development. My ability to research and comprehend these various subjects allows me to interpret current events in an expansive manner, understanding widespread impacts as well as local repercussions. In addition, I have studied French and Spanish and am competent in both and able to translate material in either language.

As a student of international relations, I have several years of experience analyzing regions of the world and the phenomena that occur within them, whether they are confined to one nation or stretch across many. My knowledge of history, politics, economics, and society around the globe enables me to evaluate issues and events with cultural sensitivity and competency. Since the beginning of 2011, I have participated in an English teaching program at the Refugee Services of Texas, often working with people from all over the world in a single day. I have also had academic instruction specifically on the subject of strategic intelligence and American foreign relations and completed several OSINT and daily briefing projects during this time. I have cultivated a global perspective and well developed research skills which I have been able to apply to many complex international events. A subject that I have spent an extensive amount of time with is human trafficking, during a research internship at St. Edward’s University. Human trafficking has become one of the most significant problems of the 21st century, and I was required to study this subject on a global scale as well as a very specific regional scale in order to articulate this complicated information to my peers. I also have experience working and living abroad in West Africa, where I had the opportunity to put my global interests and expertise in practice in the communities that I served. After 4 years of study and related work experience, I am able to work independently, think analytically, set priorities, and follow guidelines.

I am able to participate in the research internship program January through May and work up to 40 hours a week Monday through Friday. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Statement of Purpose

I realized the existence if international security in a curious way. At the

beginning of my undergraduate studies I wrote an article about Arms smuggling in the

Horn of Africa, influenced by the movie “Lord of War”. After that first dance with a

security issue I continue analyzing smuggling trends. Aware of the relations in the

trafficking of goods between Africa and Europe, discovering the world of

International Security in my geopolitics class. As I continued my under graduate

studies I started analysing security issues and trends in the American continent.

Curious as I am, I went to ask for help in my research projects to the security expert in

my university, PhD Maria Luisa Parraguez, who invited me to be part of her research

team. During that period, looking for a serious webpage of security analysis I found

Stratford.

As part of the research team I helped Dr. Parraguez to research and analyze

national, human, and international security, as well as the behaviour of the American

Think Tanks and security integration processes in Latin America. I was a research

assistant in an article “Global Emerging Issues“ written for CENTRA Technology

Inc. this summer, and I am coordinating the book “Los Cerebros del Imperio: los

Think Tanks detrás de la política exterior de Estados Unidos” about the role of the

Think Tanks in the US foreign policy making.

As an under graduate student I was also invited to be a member of the Seminar

of International Relations for graduate students and research professors at Tec de

Monterrey Mexico City Campus, where I learned from the research experts at Tec de

Monterrey and where I presented my investigations and research protocols for

feedback. At the same time I did an internship in Mexico’s Presidency, in the

department of Communication and Local Media, where I collaborated in the daily

creation of the executive news summary for the president. There I learnt about news

analysis, focusing in the different orientations of the local media and the different

perspectives and concerns of the different states in Mexico about crime and drug

issues.

On behalf of Dr. Parraguez I presented the investigation “Seguridad, Defensa y

Cooperación en America del Sur” written for the Sub-Regional Conference organized

by the Centre for Hemispheric Defence Studies, at the 2011 Seminar of the Mexican

Page 48: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

Association of International Studies. I was also an invited speaker in the presentation

of the book “Relaciones Internacionales y Politicas Publicas en Mexico” coordinated

by Dr. José Barrera, director of the Masters Programme in International Studies.

Stratford has been fundamental in my investigation on the fight against the

organized crime and drug cartels in Mexico. And along with other reports and

information I’d been able to produce successful analysis on the consequences and

future developments of the crime conflict in Mexico and in the Latin-American

region.

I am a very creative person used to analyze, organize and found the patterns in

complex problems, formulating non-traditional but creative solutions for them. I am

used to work under pressure and to take the initiative in difficult situations. I practiced

Taekwondo for 12 years, being captain, teacher and national competitor during that

period, learning to live with discipline and honour, seeking the constant improvement

in all my activities.

I’ve been reading Stratford articles and intelligence analysis for two years and

my motives for applying for an internship are: to be part of the team I’ve been

learning from and admiring for its work, and at the same time, I want to learn from

what I think is one of the best organizations of security and geopolitics analysis,

aspiring to work as an analyst there one day.

“Statement of Purpose”

Geopolitics and cultures around the world have captured my attention since I was young; however, it has not been until recently that I have decided to actively pursue a career in a field that would allow me to interact with global events on a daily basis. As an adolescent, I was blessed with opportunities to visit many different countries around the world for extended periods of time. The experiences grew my understanding of other cultures and cultivated a desire to learn more about the world, politics, and how the United States interacts with other countries.

My interest in Stratfor grew after reading Mr. Burton’s book, Ghost. I was intrigued by his work in the Diplomatic Security Service and his endeavors to pursue intelligence collection and analysis in the private sector. My fascination with geopolitics and intelligence collection continues to grow as I read the email updates published by Stratfor.

I earned my undergraduate degree in history, and I am currently working on a graduate degree in International Relations from St. Mary’s University. In addition to academic pursuits, I am experiencing a different side of United State foreign policy through the eyes of a soldier. My decision to join the Army was based on a desire to serve my country, lead and influence my fellow soldiers, and gain experience that will make me more marketable for employment with the federal government and the intelligence community as a whole. I complete Officer Candidacy School at Ft. Benning Georgia in March of this year and I am now assigned to a Civil Affairs unit in Abilene, TX. I am in the reserves so my commitment is not full time, but I do have Civil Affairs training courses that have been attending in order to prepare for a deployment to Afghanistan in late summer 2012. I am confident that this experience will expand my worldview and increase my experience with international affairs. Also, due to the flexibility of my commitment, I would be available to work over forty hours per week with the exception of a few training days with the Army. In addition to my desire to work under the guidance of Stratfor’s analysts and employees, I would like to gain experience that would assist me in my goal of working for the Bureau of Diplomatic Security or the FBI’s counterterrorism department. These agencies seem to be on the front lines in the war against terrorism and I would like to work alongside other patriots in their struggle on this critical front. If afforded the opportunity to work as an intern at Stratfor, I would fully commit myself to the tasks assigned to me. I am available to begin as early as the 3rd of January. Thank you for considering me for this position.

M4W2W3 [email protected] (647) 778 7113 Strengths Experienced Researcher and Writer I wrote numerous research papers while obtaining my BAH In religious studies. I was able to successfully pull important facts from religious texts which are notoriously wordy and convoluted in their meaning. International Experience I have spent the last year living abroad; first in South Korea and then in Egypt. My experience provided me with a wealth of cultural knowledge and has inspired me to work in the field of global intelligence. Knowledge of the Middle East and North Africa

I studied Islam and the political climate of the ME and NA extensively during my undergrad and I have been actively pursuing an education in Arabic language for two years. I also lived in Cairo, Egypt in October of 2011. Matthew Pierce Statement of Purpose

The second Jason Bourne movie, “The Bourne Supremacy”, kick-started my interest in strategic

intelligence. Pamela Landy and her team of CIA researchers had the ability to make well informed,

calculated decisions at a rapid pace because of the endless database of information they had on

everyone and everything – this concept amazed me. I realize that interning at STRATFOR will

probably be nothing like a Hollywood movie, but this is my genesis. As I grew up my fascination with

the all-knowing database evolved in to a more intellectual interest in understanding the who, how and

why of different political situations, especially those involving military intervention. This interest fuels

my desire for a career in the intelligence industry. I read STRATFOR, DefenseNews.com, and Jane's

before I even think of looking at CNN.

I am the right person for your internship position because I am a motivated, intelligent young

man with strong research skills and a great attitude. I received my BAH in religious studies from the

most selective university in Canada and while obtaining this degree cultivated my research skills.

Being successful in the field of religious studies requires one to pull facts from vast amounts of

literature that are heavily nuanced in their language, and biased in their conclusions. I overcame these

obstacles and submitted papers that were well received because of my intuitive researching and

informative presentation. I also spent the last year of my life living in South Korea and Egypt, and this

experience has opened my eyes to the disconnect that exists between what happens on the ground and

what is presented on the news networks like CNN. My experience abroad forces me to look beyond the

easily presented facts and delve in to the real motivations and mechanics of political situations like

those that occurred at Tahrir Square in Egypt and Yeonpyeong island in Korea. I would bring this same

mindset to doing research for your company.

STRATFOR is the right place for me because you are the best, and I will do whatever it takes to

work with the best and brightest. I want to work alongside the smartest people in the field for two

reasons. The first is that they will make me better at what I want to do, and the second is that I will be

able to prove to you that I am capable of being just as good as they are. I want to have a long term

career at STRATFOR and this internship is my opportunity to show you that I am the person you want

working for you. I am available immediately and indefinitely, I would gladly work full time and over

time.

STRATFOR,

My name is Miguel Andrés Salcedo and I’m applying to the research internship program because STRATFOR’s operations are perfectly in sync with my academic and professional goals. In 2010 I received a BA in International Studies, a degree that taught me the skills to perform qualitative and quantitative research of a very high caliber. My last two semesters were particularly vital to my developing these skills, during which I carried out an intensive and rigorous research project, my senior thesis. I was even given the chance to present my thesis at various conferences in the U.S. and Canada, including the Southwest International Studies Association’s Annual Conference in May 2010. Beyond these research skills, International Studies also inculcated in me a passion for global affairs and the ability to analyze them as lying within the nexus of political, social and economic systems. I was also fortunate to have had the opportunity to put my skills and interests to good use, which I believe makes me a competent and suitable candidate for an internship with STRATFOR. Some recent experiences in particular have galvanized my interest in the field of intelligence analysis. On November 23 of last year, something happened that forced me to begin thinking differently about events around me. At the time I was an English teacher on the outskirts of Seoul, beginning what I thought was a normal workday. That morning, however, I had barely started my first lesson when I learned that North Korea had just begun its bombardment of Yeonpyeong Island. The attack occurred just 50 miles away. War, it seemed, was imminent. Over the next few days, I waved goodbye to several colleagues who decided to abandon the country, and contemplated whether I should follow suit. The stakes were high. Had I hopped on the first flight home, I would have lost my job and been unable to return to Korea for breaking a contact. But staying put might have been a serious threat to my safety. It was an unnerving time, fraught with considerable uncertainty about the future. That uncertainty compelled me to probe newspapers and blogs, write old professors, consult with anyone I felt could shed light on the strategic realities and the probability of war. Having gathered and analyzed so much information from so many sources, I felt like a junior intelligence analyst of sorts. Admittedly, it was an exciting, if anxious moment of my life. I was fortunate to have made the correct decision to stay, and as a result my newfound interest in intelligence continued to grow. In fact, the field has started to fascinate me more than ever since I arrived, in early 2011, in Rio de Janeiro. Rio, like many Latin American cities, has long been notorious for its urban violence. Such violence has never been unfamiliar to me. It is an issue that is tremendously important in my native Venezuela. I grew up hearing terrible stories about my home country, stories that testify to the human capacity for cruelty. But while I've come to know Venezuela's violence primarily through the media and the emotional stories of expats, Brazil's urban strife has been far less disguised. Shortly after arriving in Rio I volunteered to teach English in Favela do Vidigal, a slum that straddles the hillside overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It lies minutes away from Ipanema and Leblon, two of the wealthiest neighborhoods in South America. Just behind Vidigal, on the opposite side of the Two Brothers Hill, lies the Rocinha slum. It is by some estimates the largest slum on the continent, with upwards of 250,000 residents. Throughout this past year I have made great friends in both of these slums, both of which are minutes away from my university. It was thus very unnerving when Rio de Janeiro State's Ministry of Security began announcing plans to "pacify" both favelas in Early November. In the past, pacification efforts have often sparked violent gun fights between drug traffickers and security forces, and there was

Page 55: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

no telling whether Vidigal and Rocinha would mark another violent episode in Rio's war on organized drug gangs. So, just as I had done in Korea, I began gathering and analyzing as much information as possible, this time on pacification strategies. I was trying to understand what had worked and what hadn’t, to make predictions and see whether my predictions would bear out. Curiously, I found that security forces had recently changed their strategy of engagement. They began to announce their entrance rather than taking slums by surprise. This gave criminals the opportunity to choose whether to take on police in defense of their territory, or flee and avoid the danger and bloodshed that had befallen many other slums throughout Rio. Most chose the latter. In fact, recent pacifications have been achieved without a shot fired. Due to these Vidigal and Rocinha’s large populations and lucrative drug markets, it was speculated on the news and elsewhere that they presented extraordinary tactical challenges. Therefore, any attempt to break up their drug empires would necessarily be met with violence. In the end, however, the same strategy of forewarning was implemented in both slums. Not a single shot was fired. Not a single injury. I feel very fortunate for two things in particular: first, to have been given the intellectual skills to carry out rigorous research and think logically about global affairs; second, to have had the opportunity to put those skills to practical use abroad. I believe these qualities make me very qualified for the research internship program at STRATFOR, and I hope I am given the chance to continue applying my skills and deepening my understanding of the intelligence world. Thank you, Miguel Andrés Salcedo

Statement of Purpose

I am writing to express my interest in the Research internship program in

Strategic Forecasting, Inc, a global intelligence company. I will be graduating in May 2012 with a degree in Economics, a business concentration through the McCombs School of Business, and minors in Finance and Chinese. Due to my interest in global economics and research, STRATFOR has attracted me as a great place in which to pursue a career. I am very excited about this opportunity because through it I could gain first-hand experience in a global intelligence research work while growing professionally. I also believe that my own experiences and skills make me an exceptionally suitable intern, capable of doing a great job for your company as well.

I would like to take this opportunity to explain to you the main reasons why I would be a great addition to STRATFOR. First, during my college career I had the honor to serve as the president of the governing body of on-campus housing. Through this experience, I grew tremendously as a person and team player by gaining leadership skills and problem solving skills. For example, one of the events I organized was a Halloween Carnival that attracted more than 500 people. The main goal was to show appreciation to the staff that works in on-campus housing. In order to obtain approval and funding for the event, I communicated with people in all spectrums of the university hierarchy and found creative ways to solve any logistical and communication-related problems that arose. During the carnival, I managed the entire event, which was composed of three separate parts, while dealing with an overwhelming crowd of people. I did this by implementing new methods such as issuing tour group cards and using a more efficient tour route. Throughout the process, I fully enjoyed my interaction with every group, from the children who were solely interested in candies to the Vice President of student affairs. As I saw the joy that my program brought and the headlines it made in the school paper, I felt a great sense of achievement, realizing how much of a positive impact we had as a one team. Throughout the entire process, I became a creative problem solver and I believe this will help me greatly as a research intern at STRATFOR.

Moreover, I have an extensive experience and educational background in economics, econometrics, statistics, and finance. Not only have I successfully finished the coursework on those classes, but I also have taken an initiative to conduct couple research projects using regression analysis in STATA as well. For my first research paper, I compiled 60 years worth of data for 80 countries abroad to study a population growth pattern. Then, for the second research paper, I took a step further to examine the cause of decreasing birthrate and possible solutions in OECD countries. Thankfully, I even had an opportunity to present my work in annual CWGS (Center for Women’s and Gender Studies) Graduate Student Conference and Undergraduate Research oral symposium, and receive positive feedbacks. In addition to these research works involving data, I also have conducted a kind of research that involves extensive web search and reading to render a solution. For a class assignment, I analyzed a certain company’s strategies, marketing, competitors, and consumers and wrote 13 pages long report on possible strategies to obtain a sustainable profit. In order to deliver a meaningful result, I

Page 62: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

have synthesized strategies for the company based on the research and reading I had done. Although I spent numerous hours in researching, collecting and sorting the articles I read, I treasure this experience because I could produce considerably significant strategies as a result. This experience where I had to synthesize a conclusion from many different elements will surely help my performance as an intern at STRATFOR.

Finally, during the summer of 2009 I worked as an Orientation Advisor and served in the Multimedia Publicity committee. In this committee, I produced posters, commercials, and films using Photoshop and Adobe premiere. Those media products we produced were very popular among the orientees and the Orientation Advisors. On top of Adobe Photoshop and premiere, I am also very proficient with Microsoft office products like Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access as well. Moreover, beside STATA program I mentioned earlier, I am also proficient with programs like MATLAB, and GAMS that are commonly used in the field of economics and finance research as well. I have a special interest in the Research internship program because I will gain a significant amount of knowledge and insights in global affairs through this experience. Since I am a fast learner and have a strong communication, analytical, leadership and problem-solving disposition from my academic and leadership experiences, I am confident that I will be a good fit for STRATFOR. I am also intrigued by STRATFOR’s emphasis in the topics like politics, economics, and military because these are the topics I am personally most interested in as well. Given the opportunity, I hope to contribute to increase STRATFOR’s global reputation through my knowledge in Asian economics and foreign language skills. I can start the internship as early as Jan. 17th and will most likely work during the afternoon shift due to class schedules next semester. Lastly, I generally have a very flexible schedule, so I could interview at your earliest convenience. I cannot express how excited I am for this opportunity. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, MinAe Noh

Statement of Purpose

STRATFOR’s global intelligence and perspective provide critical analysis and forecasts

that inform decision-makers’ policies and actions. I believe that the importance of these unique

insights has become even greater for guiding policy and international practices in an increasingly

integrated and complex global, economic, political environment. I am applying for the Research

Internship to apply my analytical skill sets to contribute to STRATFOR’s work as well as for the

opportunity to enhance my professional development toward a career in international policy and

global affairs. I have significant analytical research and international experience as well as a

strong background and interest in international policy and development. Moreover, I also display

a high level of productivity and capacity to manage projects independently with effective

problem-solving skills, organization, and communications. These are essential qualifications and

strengths that I will bring to STRATFOR and the research internship experience, the firm’s

intelligence analysis and operations. With these reasons, I believe that I am an ideal candidate for

the Research Internship at STRATFOR.

My graduate studies at The University of Texas, Austin and at The Wagner School of

Public Service have given me contextual knowledge and an in-depth understanding of economic

and political institutions and environments in Asia. My research focuses on the relations between

economic development and political order as well as the variations in political institutions in

countries of East and Southeast Asia. My Master’s thesis, for example, drew upon an original

comparative analysis of economic reform policies in Vietnam and the former Soviet Union to

compare and examine China’s transition from a centrally-planned economy to a market-oriented

economy, including the incremental impact that economic reforms and development have on

China’s current and future political development.

I also acquired practical tools and experience through extensive fieldwork in Asia for

policy analysis, assessment and evaluation. Fieldwork has required strong organizational and

management skills of me, and has given me significant on-the-ground experience in both

assessing international development projects and in liaising with civil organizations. I worked on

a year-long international project for The Asia Foundation to monitor initiatives and progress in

Cambodia toward decentralization, and to develop a survey instrument for assessing local

officials perceptions to provide The Asia Foundation with situation analysis for better

understanding and further programming to support and promote sub-national governance efforts

in Cambodia. In Vietnam, I worked independent and collaboratively with team projects at the

Environmental Development Action in the Third World spearhead the Diaspora for Development

action-research study. The research study sought to assess the potential for strengthened

partnerships between Diaspora and local actors for economic and social development in Vietnam,

I drafted background reports, collected data on Diaspora’s investment and activities, conducted

preliminary interviews with individuals and organizations in Ho Chi Minh City, and documented

research findings and analysis in a written, final report. In both exemplary instances, I

demonstrated the ability to analyze complex issues and synthesize disparate, incoherent elements

for analytical research and evaluation.

Page 65: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

2

In addition, I bring a wealth of quantitative and qualitative skills from research and

working experience with policy and globally oriented organizations that will advance my ability

to gather, process, and disseminate research and intelligence analysis at STRATFOR. At the

EastWest Institute, I effectively collected and analyzed quantitative and qualitative empirical

data on arms sales by the U.S. to Taiwan as part of a larger project study to address China-U.S.

political differences over the issue of arms sales. I further conducted research in English and

Mandarin to provide briefings and reports that monitor developments in bilateral relations and

security between China and the U.S. My familiarity with complex database, data collection and

analysis can also be demonstrated with my successful involvement at Texans For Public Justice

in the Money In PoliTex report of the 2006 Texas elections where I identified relevant data and

information, process and analyzed $307-million in political contributions and spending, as well

as summarized and presented research findings in the final reports.

I am seeking for the Research Internship opportunity at STRATFOR to apply the

analytical skills and experience that are evident in my career trajectory as well as to further

pursue my career and research interests in international policy and affairs. I am able to commit to

a minimum of 20 hours per week starting from January during the research internship. I strongly

believe in the importance of unique insights from critical analysis and global intelligence for

guiding informed decisions and actions in today’s complex, global affairs. With significant

analytical skill sets, background and interests, I also believe that I am an ideal candidate for the

Research Internship at STRATFOR.

Stratfor

Dear Sirs,

As an imminent double graduate in Finance and Strategy from Sciences Po Paris and the

Warsaw School of Economics, I would like to apply for the Research Internship Program at

Stratfor (spring term).

Although during my studies and past internships I have focused mainly on economics and

finance, I am mostly interested in analyzing international affairs. This is partly the reason why

I chose sovereign wealth funds, a financial, as well as political issue, as the topic of my

graduate thesis. I believe having a good knowledge of the pillars of finance is very helpful to

understand many political and international issues. Therefore an internship at Stratfor would

be a great opportunity for me to make use of my knowledge and practical experience.

I am confident I would make a positive contribution to the work of Stratfor. Firstly, I have a

notable international background and speak fluently French, Polish, English and Spanish.

Secondly, I have an important sense of responsibility, which I learned in particular during my

involvement in the work of a Polish political party: as a spokesman, I was responsible for

relations with the media and for organizing press conferences. Then, as a General Secretary I

have been responsible for administrative work and for watching over the good internal

functioning of the party.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Yours sincerely,

Marcin T. Obroniecki

Statement of Purpose

Dear Madam / Sir

I am Resat Tuna, born on April 7, 1986 in Izmir, Turkey. I am applying for the research internship

program at Stratfor. I have a bachelor’s degree in Leather Engineering Department at Ege University

in Izmir, Turkey. Stratfor research internship program seems to be ideal for my career interests and I

am confident that I can contribute to this program.

Throughout my high school education I was always a self disciplined and hard working student and in

2004 university entrance exam I was successfully ranked among top 8000 students over 2 million

applicants in Turkey. I chose Ege University for my undergraduate studies because it is one of the

most advanced, the most acknowledged and the most challenging university of Turkey. The courses

which I particularly enjoyed are economics, statistics and cost analysis, which have introduced me to

various theoretical concepts and methods which are beneficial for working in private sector.

My undergraduate education at Ege University, along with my summer internships in Turkey’s leading

company DERMA has deepened my interest in researching leather chemicals. By studying in research

internship program in Stratfor, I will be able to fulfill my ultimate goal of carrying out research on

global intelligence and I will improve myself as a well trained analyst director to establish a career in

Stratfor.

I contributed to Work and Travel program in USA at 2005 summer, which helped me to improve my

English, investigate a new culture, improve my vision and develop human relations. Also it introduced

the difficulties of professional life and it enabled me to solve the problems that were encountered.

When I spend more time in USA, I realized that in USA human life is much more valuable than

Turkey. This fact encouraged me to spend my professional and personal life in USA.

As an open minded person, I am indeed willingly to do research on all global research topics, but there

are several topics that attract me most. First research topic I desire is world politics. Therefore, I would

love to expand my knowledge and experience on world politics. The reason for my interest in this

subject is the amazing events occurring in the world such as Arab Spring, 1st and 2nd Gulf War

between USA and Iraq and 11th September. The second research topic I am thinking of study is global

finance. I think global finance is the biggest reason for all wars in the history that the world suffered

from. Therefore, I want to carve deeper into this subject and focus on research topics to completely

understand the complex global finance phenomenon. The last research topic that interests me is the

Page 72: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

geopolitics. Besides, apart from these subjects, I would like to emphasize that I am a flexible

researcher who can concentrate on other subjects with unending motivation.

In addition to my technical qualifications, I believe my personal skills will also make a valuable asset.

I am confident that my education and motivation to excel will make me successful towards the Stratfor

research internship program and beyond. I am a responsible team player with leadership skills,

believing in utmost communication and teamwork within the group are the keys to overall success. I

believe that you will find me to be well-spoken, energetic, confident and personable, the type of

person whom you can rely on.

I believe that a research internship program in Stratfor will go a long way in preparing me for a

successful career in global intelligence sector. It would be a great privilege to do my research studies

at Stratfor and I am sure my background and qualifications are found suitable for the research intership

program. I am confident that I could both learn a great deal about global intelligence profession at

Stratfor and do my best to contribute to any research when needed. Thank you for considering my

application.

Sincerely,

Resat TUNA

United  States  national  security  has  long  been  my  academic  interest,  and  I  entered

graduate  school  with  the  goal  of  acquiring  the  skills  and  knowledge  I  would  need  to

contribute  meaningfully  to  the  field  of  U.S.  security  policy.  I  recently  received  my  Master’s

Degree  from  the  Josef  Korbel  School  of  International  Studies  at  the  University  of  Denver,

pursuing  a  degree  in  International  Studies  with  a  concentration  in  international  security

and  regional  concentrations  in  the  Middle  East  and  South  Asia.  During  my  graduate  studies,

I  focused  my  curriculum  and  work  experience  on  intelligence  analysis.    Both  my  academic

and  professional  background  helped  me  realize  that  I  can  best  serve  this  country  as  an

intelligence  analyst.    This  is  why  I  am  excited  to  apply  to  the  Research  Internship  Program

at  Stratfor.    I  have  long  followed  the  briefings  Stratfor  puts  out  and  the  level  of  work  done

by  Stratfor  analysts  is  of  the  highest  level.  I  look  forward  to  new  articles  and  am  always

interested  to  hear  what  the  Stratfor  experts  have  to  say  whenever  they  are  featured  in

outside  publications  and  news  programs.  Stratfor  is  an  authority  in  global  intelligence  and

the  prospect  to  be  a  part  of  this  company,  learning  to  gather  and  analyze  open  source

intelligence,  would  be  an  exceptional  opportunity  for  me  and  empower  me  in  achieving  my

professional  goals.

My  graduate  experience  at  the  University  of  Denver  motivated  me  to  pursue  a

career  in  intelligence.  I  have  considerable  experience  researching  a  wide  variety  of  topics

concerning  the  political  and  military  issues  in  the  Middle  East  and  South  Asia.  I  conducted  a

long-‐term  research  project  on  the  military  capabilities  of  Iran  and  how  the  nations  of  the

Gulf  Cooperation  Council  weighed  their  fears  of  Iranian  power  in  the  region  against  the

security  interests  of  the  United  States.  During  my  studies,  I  analyzed  open-‐source

intelligence  dealing  with  various  Middle  East  strategic  issues  and  identified  future  trends

and  developments  in  the  region.  In  addition  to  research,  I  have  a  great  deal  of  experience

presenting  my  findings  and  defending  my  positions  and  suggestions  during  courses  and  in

meetings  with  colleagues  and  superiors.  In  the  second  year  of  my  studies,  I  participated  in  a

simulation  run  by  visiting  CIA  analysts.  In  the  simulation,  students  were  split  into  groups

and  given  a  vast  amount  of  raw  intelligence  describing  political  unrest  in  Iran  to  analyze.

We  were  charged  with  reporting  a  summary  of  our  findings  to  a  high-‐ranking  government

official,  played  by  one  of  the  CIA  analysts.    During  the  exercise,  I  discovered  I  had  a  talent

Page 74: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

for  sorting  through  intelligence  and  was  able  to  lead  my  group  in  both  the  analysis  and

briefing  stages.  I  also  noticed  how  other  groups  had  taken  the  same  materials  we  were

given  and  reached  much  different  conclusions,  which  worried  me  to  an  extent.  I  saw  how

faulty  intelligence  reports  could  bring  disastrous  consequences,  and  I  hope  to  mitigate  such

occurrences  as  much  as  possible  in  my  career  as  an  analyst.

In  addition  to  my  studies,  I  further  developed  my  interest  for  intelligence  analysis

while  working  as  an  intern  in  Washington,  D.C.  at  The  Atlantic  Council.  I  worked  for  the

South  Asia  Center  and  dealt  with  national  security  issues  relating  to  Pakistan,  Afghanistan,

and  Iran.  I  worked  with  their  Iran  Task  Force,  whose  mission  is  to  explore  the  likelihood  of

building  a  dialogue  between  the  US  and  Iran.    I  created  and  distributed  daily  briefings  on

what  was  happening  in  the  region  and  coordinated  televised  events  as  well  as  private

meetings  with  military  and  government  officials  at  the  highest  levels.  The  task  force  places

great  importance  on  the  volume  of  intelligence  we  receive  on  Iranian  activities  as  well  as

how  reliable  that  intelligence  is.  I  was  able  to  work  under  an  expert  on  Pakistan’s  ISI,  and

appreciate  how  complicated  our  intelligence  resources  and  capabilities  were  in  this  part  of

the  world.

My  academic  and  professional  background  in  international  studies  makes  me  an

ideal  candidate  for  a  research  internship  at  Stratfor.  I  possess  extensive  experience  in  data

analysis  as  well  as  communicating  my  ideas  through  reports  and  formal  briefings.  In

addition,  I  have  traveled  widely  across  the  Middle  East  and  South  Asia,  studying  and

working  in  the  region.  I  have  attended  meetings  with  academics  and  government  officials

As I walked back from school along a rocky, muddy road, I saw a truck. As stacked sheets of metal were handed out, a thunderous voice boomed out from broken speakers sitting on top of the cab, “El Frente! El Frente! Siempre!” I watched the strange ritual occur over and over. Families ran forward, rejoiced as they grabbed their new roof, and the mothers and children returned to their, for lack of a better description, tarp-covered shacks cheering and cajoling. The men in the truck talked with the eldest man of the family, sometimes the father, others the son, but each conversation ending with a friendly hug. On the surface, it appeared to be the Nicaraguan government providing a useful service to the community. But something seemed off. Seeing me, the lone American in a rural farming community, the men in the truck excitedly pointed and hollered at me. I walked to the truck and started a conversation with them, asking what they were doing, where they were from, and other general inquiries that an outsider might find interesting. Each question they answered enthusiastically, occasionally trying to insert broken English in the conversation. I soon learned the ruling political party, the FSLN, had hired them to pass out these government-funded roofs in exchange for securing promises to vote for Ortega for his 3rd term. It dawned on me I was witnessing voter manipulation first-hand. The exchange sparked my curiosity. Ortega went on to win that election with 62% of the vote this past November and I couldn’t help but wonder about the implications of what I had witnessed. While it might be extreme to say that tin roofs decided the election, the leftist Ortega has undeniably rallied populist support using methods similar to other outspoken leaders like Hugo Chavez and Evo Morales. These leaders are part of the “pink tide”, as it is sometimes called, that has occurred as left-leaning governments have risen to power in the Western Hemisphere. Knowing these facts, I wasn’t surprised when I discovered that the manufacturer of the tin roofs, a small metal processing plant outside of Managua, had been funded by a large investment from Venezuela. This experience, from my initial contact to the follow up research, is just a minor demonstration of who I am. As an economics and international relations double major at St. Edward’s, I have studied the factors behind global issues and how historical events have impacted different sectors of society. I am fascinated by globalization and the impact of technology, such as social media, on geopolitics. The trip to Nicaragua, half of a 10-week trek through Central America, was an education of its own, blending what I have learned in classrooms with field experience. As such, I strongly feel that I am an excellent candidate for an internship with Stratfor.

My understanding of global events, veracity for learning, and unwavering determination would contribute to an educational and beneficial experience for both Stratfor and myself. I have intimate knowledge of economics, both theoretical and applied, international politics, and technology. Specifically, several subjects I have studied in-depth are: cyber security/warfare, social media, Anonymous, free trade, disaster preparation and relief, drug violence in Latin America, terrorism, arms trafficking, and the ‘Arab Spring’ revolutions. I am fluent in Spanish, well versed in political ideologies, and a skillful researcher. Despite a lack of experience in my educational field, I have gained several important skills from other jobs that make me qualified for Stratfor. As a tennis coach, I have worked closely with a wide range of people from various backgrounds. From volunteering in low-income areas in Arkansas, Texas, Panama, and Nicaragua, I have gained unique

Page 79: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

perspectives on the world. With the Red Cross, first in Austin and then in Granada, Nicaragua, I have sought ways to streamline disaster response and worked on creating more efficient practices for social media. In particular, I designed a system during an internship at the Red Cross of Central Texas that has been used repeatedly to contact 104 media sources instantly to disseminate information, reducing response delays and the need for administrative support in disaster response. During the spring semester, I am available for up to 36 hours a week, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., starting January 17th. I will be graduating in May 2012, so my class load is light and I will be able to commit my energy and focus to this internship. In full disclosure, I am a student-athlete playing intercollegiate tennis for St. Edward’s. The spring is our season so there will be days that I will be gone for matches, but I will know far in advance and communicate that as such. At a maximum, it would be around 15 days for the 3-month period. Working for Stratfor would give me the springboard to achieve my career goals. I strongly believe that it would serve as the basis for a meaningful relationship that I could continue following the hopeful completion of a Fulbright Grant in Guatemala. Regardless, I sincerely appreciate the consideration and am willing to supply any more information desired.

Sonali  Brahmbhatt  STRATFOR’s  Research  Internship  Program-‐  Statement  of  Purpose

Every  morning  at  my  internship  with  the  Federal  Government  last  summer,  I  was  responsible  for  reading  the  Times  of  India,  one  of  India’s  leading  newspapers.  I  was  to  find  articles  in  the  paper  that  suggested  the  newspaper’s  stance  on  key  political  and  geographical  issues.  I  broadened  my  research  by  reading  archived  open  source  articles  from  the  government’s  databases  which  pertained  to  my  focus.  I  found  information  regarding  the  paper’s  positions  on  Indian  foreign  policy  over  time,  their  stance  on  Indian  and  American  political  parties,  any  hints  of  biases  the  paper  had,  and  the  geopolitical  concerns  between  Indian  and  its  neighboring  countries.    Using  open  source  information,  I  developed  a  comprehensive  media  guide  on  the  newspaper.  Throughout  the  course  of  my  internship,  my  objective  was  not  to  collect  information,  but  also  to  analyze  the  open  source  information  and  develop  it  into  useful  and  pertinent  intelligence  for  U.S.  policy  makers.

Historically,  obtaining  information  has  proven  a  much  more  difficult  process.  However,  technological  advancements  have  made  it  significantly  easier  to  access  newspapers,  magazines,  and  various  media  reports  from  every  corner  of  the  world.  This  has  caused  major  changes  in  the  intelligence  cycle  as  the  focus  shifted  from  obtaining  information  to  processing  it  into  intelligence.  As  an  senior  Economics  student  at  The  University  of  Texas  at  Austin,  my  education  has  given  me  the  analytic  tools  necessary  to  examine  information  and  deconstruct  it  into  significant  elements  and  vice  versa.

In  addition,  I  am  double  majoring  in  Asian  Cultures  and  Languages  (focusing  on  Hindi  and  Urdu)  for  which  I  travelled  to  India  to  complete  a  year-‐long  study  abroad  last  year.  During  my  trip,  I  would  often  read  the  various  Indian  newspapers  and  watch  the  24-‐hour  news  channels  as  well.  Through  this  first-‐hand  exposure,  I  noticed  many  of  the  elements  that  I  had  researched  about  the  Times  of  India  during  my  internship.  For  example,  when  Osama  bin  Laden’s  death  was  announced,  I  observed  a  major  difference  between  what  was  reported  in  the  Indian  newspapers  versus  the  American  newspapers  that  I  read  online.    One  of  the  top  stories  on  the  front  page  of  the  Times  of  India  reported  that  bin  Laden’s  body  had  been  “dumped”  in  the  sea,  while  the  American  press  had  been  using  the  word  “buried”.  In  India,  where  sentiments  towards  Pakistan  are  extremely  negative,  the  choice  of  words  that  a  newspaper  uses  in  a  story  can  send  strong  signals  to  its  readers.    Furthermore,  while  American  newspapers  were  simply  suggesting  the  Pakistani  government’s  possible  role  in  the  situation,  Indian  newspapers  were  taking  the  liberty  to  make  assumptions  and  were  discrediting  the  Pakistani  government.  I  concluded  that  the  Indian  newspapers  strove  to  report  the  general  public’s  feelings  toward  global  situations.  The  public  was  very  much  against  Pakistan  because  they  believed  the  U.S.  and  other  world  leaders  give  Pakistan  more  aid  and  attention  than  India.  Also,  post-‐partition  tension  involving  the  disputed  region  of  Kashmir  continues  to  fuel  the  crisis  between  the  two  countries.    Combined  with  the  analytic  skills  I  had  developed  from  my  Economics  classes,  and  my  cultural  and  geopolitical  expertise  of  South  Asia,  I  took  open  source  media  and  disassembled  it  into  various  elements  to  draw  an  analytic  conclusion.

Due  to  the  variety  and  relevance  of  the  experiences  I  have  had,  I  believe  that  I  am  a  strong  candidate  for  STRATFOR’s  Research  Internship  Program.  I  have  first-‐hand  experience  working  with  open  source  media  and  disseminating  it  for  further  use.  I  am  able  to  see  problems  through  an  analytic

Page 82: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

perspective  to  find  multiple  solutions.  I  have  spent  a  significant  amount  of  my  life  studying  the  geopolitical  concerns  of  the  South  Asian  region  and  can  fluently  speak,  write,  and  read  in  Hindi,  Urdu  and  Gujarati.    Lastly,  I  aspire  to  obtain  a  graduate  level  degree  in  International  Relations  and  strive  to  become  an  intelligence  analyst.

I  will  be  available  to  start  from  Monday  January  23,  2011  and  have  classes  at  UT  on  Tuesdays  and  Thursdays.

Statement of Purpose

After completing my master’s degree in Global Politics at the London School of Economics and Political

Science, I have determined that an internship at STRATFOR would supplement the knowledge and skills

that I have attained as a result of my education and experience. In detailing as to why I should be

considered for this internship, I believe it is also important to explain why I decided to pursue an

education in global affairs and international relations. The answer lies in two significant events that

happened during my lifetime, the first being the 9/11 attacks and the second being the war in Iraq that

commenced in 2003. The 9/11 attacks represented the first time the United States had been attacked

on its soil since the attacks on Pearl Harbor in 1941. In my attempt to look for answers as to how such an

attack could have been possible, I realized it was imperative to look at American foreign policy and so

decided to study international relations. The 2003 Iraq war, which was based on the inaccurate claim

that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction led to the United States paying an extraordinary cost

in both blood and treasure. The war in Iraq led to my disillusionment in the direction US foreign policy

was headed and gave me the added impetus to attain a background in international relations and use it

to further my goal of a career in the intelligence world or the foreign service.

Besides the events of 9/11 and the war in Iraq, another event, living in India for several years has also

led to my interest in global affairs. As a result of living in India, I managed to gain insight into the history

and geopolitics of South Asia in general and of India in particular. My familiarity with South Asia enabled

me to attain a position as a researcher on a project related to India, a project which involved researching

India’s position on the Kyoto Protocol, the war in Iraq and the International Criminal Court. South Asia in

recent years has become one of the more vital regions when it comes to American foreign policy and

global security, given the presence of American troops in Afghanistan and the fraying relationship

between the United States and Pakistan. I believe that while I may not be an expert on the intricacies

involved when it comes to issues related to South Asia, my familiarity with the region and fluency in

Hindi, however, will prove to be an asset if selected for this internship.

As my resume will reflect, during my undergraduate and graduate education I have focused on a wide

array of subjects related to foreign policy and international affairs in order to prepare myself for a career

in the foreign service or intelligence world. My education has not only made me knowledgeable on

subjects pertaining to foreign policy and international affairs it has also instilled in me strong

organizational, research and writing skills, all of which I believe are required to meet the requirements

of an internship at STRATFOR.

It will be a great opportunity for me to be selected for a research internship at STRATFOR, since this

internship would serve as the perfect stepping stone to achieve my goal of establishing a career in the

foreign service or the intelligence world, since STRATFOR is at the cutting edge of analyzing and

interpreting military, economic and political events abroad. This internship would also introduce me to

working in a rigorous and challenging environment which I am bound to face as I prepare for my career.

As stated on the career opportunities page of the STRATFOR website, I will be available to begin the

internship starting early January 2012 till early May 2012. Since I have not planned out a weekly

Page 88: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

schedule yet, I do not have the exact days of the week I will be available, but I will be working 20-40

hours a week in 4-8 hour shifts as described on the career opportunities page of the STRATFOR website.

I hope that I have demonstrated that I have the abilities and the qualifications to be considered an

eligible candidate for this position. If you have any additional questions I can be reached at the email

address or phone number listed below. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Ved Singh

I am applying to STRATFOR’s research internship program because I have a genuine interest and love of learning about world affairs and I believe that the opportunity to work for such a respected global intelligence organization will significantly help open doors towards a career in intelligence analysis. I first heard about STRATFOR through Matt Mawhinney, who is in the analyst development program. After discussing the nature of the work with Matt, I became increasingly excited about a position that would utilize my intellectual and analytical abilities. In addition to gaining experience by conducting research from open-source intelligence and published data, I feel that the knowledge gained by working with the professionals at STRATFOR will be invaluable to understanding the nuances of foreign relations.

I have been subscribed to STRATFOR’s free intelligence reports and have found

them extremely useful in understanding what is happening, why it is happening, and how it is happening. One of the first reports I happened to read was Scott Stewart’s, “Dissecting a Mexican Drug Cartel Bombing in Monterrey.” Along with North Korean propaganda, Mexican cartel activity is a subject area in which I have a strong interest. I was immediately drawn to the intense methodology that STRATFOR uses to understand all the variables and motives behind an event.

In addition to my enthusiasm for learning about global affairs, I also have a personal background that affords me a unique perspective: I was the first person in my family to be born in the United States. Both my parents and sister were born in the former Soviet Union, and I spent the early years of my life speaking Russian. While some of my language skills have diminished over time due to lack of practice, I retain basic conversational skills and have been working to improve my proficiency. My listening skills in Russian are strong, giving me the ability to comprehend a wider range of media. By growing up in an Americanized household with Russian roots, I have learned to see issues from a worldview rather than just an American perspective, an ability that is integral to understanding global issues. Furthermore, I have loved traveling to places like Belgium and the Czech Republic to gain exposure to different cultures and ideas.

My interest in global affairs was fostered in college. I graduated cum laude from Suffolk University with a Bachelor of Arts in History and while my primary focus was American history, many of my classes dealt with American foreign relations. Classes such as “U.S.-Latin American Foreign Relations” and “The African Diaspora” served as a foundation for analyzing current events in these regions because they provided social, economic, and political context for how these events developed. These types of classes taught me the skills needed to grasp the complexities of issues faced around the world. One of the most useful classes I took in college was “Research Methods.” Through this class, I learned how to interpret primary and secondary sources, as well as numerical data. I also expanded upon my abilities to effectively recognize bias in reporting. My experience in recognizing reliable sources and questioning incomplete data will serve me well as a research intern.

During my junior year of college, I co-founded my university’s Model United Nations club. I held the position of Vice-President and not only hosted debates and round-table discussions on campus on topics including the disarmament of Iran and the genocide in Sudan, but was able to compete on an international scale at the 2007 Harvard Model United Nations conference against schools from around the world. I represented the small nation of Guinea-Bissau and used problem solving skills to assist in passing a resolution to help protect third-world countries from being exploited by multinational corporations. Model United Nations helped me work on my research skills, and through this club, I gained a greater understanding of global issues.

As much as I enjoyed building a student club from the ground up, my proudest

achievement in my academic career was an award I received my senior year at Suffolk. I was one of thirteen students in my department to be awarded the History Department Book Prize for “students who show outstanding promise as scholars and have made significant contributions to the intellectual life of the Department.” Students who receive this award cannot apply, but instead must be nominated by professors within the department. It was the highest compliment I could receive from scholars for whom I held a deep respect.

Since finishing my undergraduate studies, I have primarily been employed as a paralegal. My time working at law firms has been invaluable for developing my organizational skills, learning to work under pressure, and understanding the intricacies of an office environment. Working for large clients such as Microsoft Corporation and Amazon Technologies has taught me to produce a polished product in a timely manner. I typically handle a docket of over fifty cases for approximately three to four attorneys. On any given day, I must track deadlines, proofread work, and assist attorneys in managing their workload; all skills that will be beneficial to transitioning to an internship at STRATFOR. Additionally, I have spent a brief portion of my work history at a historical consulting firm where I familiarized myself with primary and secondary sources to track the lineage of historical properties in the town of Northboro, Massachusetts. Combined with my educational background, this work has provided me with a strong research foundation in a professional setting.

My background and passion for international affairs makes me eager to be a part of the

STRATFOR team. I can begin working as early as January 2, 2012 and can work up to 40 hours per week. My availability is open to maximize the benefit I would receive from this internship.

My discovery of geopolitics was a defining moment in life. Since a young age I’ve had an interest in history, and that interest grew into a passion for global affairs and the various disciplines that influence them. Geopolitical study, as opposed to more conventional methodologies, provided me a clearer picture of the state of the world and a better explanation of the underlying causes that drive major events. Its logical and well founded approach to forecasting appealed to me immensely, and I began applying it in my own life; from my choice of investments to my political engagements. The reason I’m seeking the chance to intern at STRATFOR is simply because the book which introduced me to geopolitics was authored by its founder, and I am convinced your organization is at the forefront of a field I want to base my career in. I subscribe to your service, and have gained an observer’s familiarity with your methods of analysis and forecasting by reading your articles on a daily basis and examining the weekly intelligence guidance reports. The chance to actively participate in the application of these methods while gaining experience as a STRATFOR intern is a dream opportunity for me. Self-aggrandizement has always made me uncomfortable so I felt it was appropriate to quote someone referencing me whom I deeply respect, and to highlight some characteristics of mine which I believe would make me an asset to your organization.

“[Yannick] is a committed student, with a lively critical intelligence and broad intellectual and cultural interests. He has a high level of social and political awareness and a genuine interest in doing something of public value. I can say without hesitation, as former president of McMaster University and as a professor of English who has known and worked with many students, that Yannick is an exceptional young man showing great promise.” Alvin A. Lee President Emeritus and Professor of English Emeritus, McMaster University

The preceding sentences are the most complimentary words ever used to describe me, and I constantly strive to be worthy of them. To that end, I dedicate myself to my work and continuously seek self-improvement in order to have a positive impact on my surroundings. I take an active interest in regional and federal politics by volunteering with my preferred party, and chose to work at a non-profit organization for the first year after my graduation. My patience, empathy, and respect for others ensure good relations with collaborators and allow me to bring out the best in my peers; traits that have facilitated my integration into many organizations. I am positive that my dedication, conscientiousness, and affable nature, would enable me to excel in my duties as an intern. In terms of professional and academic experience I believe my training is well suited to a research internship at STRATFOR. My background in translation and experience translating legal documents for Harrison Pensa LLP instilled in me a meticulous attention to detail and the ability to identify and convey the intended meaning behind text based expression. I’m accustomed to strict deadlines, and the results of my research and work are presented clearly, concisely, and accurately. As technical writer and project manager at the Centre Français Hamilton Inc., I installed a cloud computing network and built databases to manage the critical information required by the organization including services, financial records, contacts, and events. My efforts eliminated the costs associated with a regular on-site network, and the new efficient system allowed

Page 93: wikileaks.org...Alex Babaris 416-888-5987 Alexander.Babaris@gmail.com Education Master of Arts: Central/East European and Russian-Area Studies Sep …

employees quicker access to information. I also designed all the internal documentation and public announcements while assuring that all written and visual information conformed to an organization-wide theme. While completing my degree in French language and literature I honed my research skills by exhaustively analysing books, digital depositories, and other information sources in order to write numerous historiographical, comparative, and persuasive essays. I maintained honors status thanks to a clean writing style and my ability to filter large quantities of data and select only the most suitable information in support of my points. I feel I would fit in well as an intern at STRATFOR because my experiences have taught me to efficiently process large amounts of information and present my findings in a variety of formats with insight and confidence; skills that would allow me to intuitively filter and disseminate the open source intelligence used by your firm. Staying abreast of new technologies and incorporating them into my work is a priority, and I am certain my technical knowledge would serve your organization well. I believe my faculties are well suited to STRATFOR’s methodology, and my resourcefulness would allow me to resolve the unique challenges I would face as an intern. Moreover, my personable nature and desire for improvement allow me to foster good working relations with my peers and grant me a ready acceptance of constructive criticism; traits I feel would facilitate a smooth integration into your organization. Excited by the prospect of an opportunity with STRATFOR and impressed by the breadth of your work, I would welcome the chance to meet with you to discuss my qualifications in more detail. I am confident that I can deliver strong research results for your organization and look forward to a personal interview. Sincerely, Yannick Harster Availability: I would be available to begin full-time work on January 1st 2012 until August 31st 2012 as I plan to complete my master’s degree in geopolitics at King’s College in London, England next September.
