Topic Sentence   In Ray Bradbury’s short story, “There Will Come Soft Rains,” he illustrates how people’s dependence on technology

detaches them from nature, ultimately leading to the destruction of the world around them.  Developing Idea How does a detachment from nature lead to destruction?   Technology is a consuming, part of everyday life Overuse of technology creates isolation/distancing Technology takes the place of nature, and gives people basic needs (food, shelter, etc)   Modern society depends on technology for survival. Basic needs, such as food, shelter, and luxuries such as

entertainment, once provided by nature, are now all attained through technological devices. Individuals no longer have be part of the real world because nature is brought to them through electronics.

Quotation   Nature is replaced and kept at a distance by the house. Even after the family is long gone, technology continues to

keep nature at a distance. “If a sparrow touched the window the shade popped up… Not even a bird must touch this house” (2).

Analysis of Quotation   How does this quotation connect to the topic sentence?   With nature locked out, it is out of sight out of mind Animals the are part of nature are replaced in the nursery Yellow giraffes, blue lions, pink antelopes, false reality No concern for nature, out of sight, out of mind.   Conclusion   Human-developed technology that causes humans to be unattached, isolated from nature, is what ultimately causes

their downfall in the form of a nuclear Armageddon.
