How to Write Expressions

1) Read the statement and understand what you are being asked to do.

2) Look for the key words to translate into operations (+, -, x, ÷).

3) Look for “is” to translate to =.

4) Parentheses are used to arrange in a certain order.

5) Write out your expression or equation and check your work.

A) A sum of a number and 3.

= x + 3

B) 37 increased by 5= 37 + 5

C) 10 times a number= 10 x n or 10n or 10‧n
