242 243 A History of the Poles in America to 1908

cember 1893 Father Feliks Baran OMe from Galicia by birth came here and administered the parish until the end of 1896

After father Baran OMe still another Franciscan Father Stanislaw Tarnowski OMe was the pastor for three months since February 201897 there have been the following priests first Father Julian Zielinski born in Gniezno and ordained here in Trenton He was succeeded by Father Maciej Tarnowski from Galicia and ordained in Krak6w as a Reformationist Next the pastor here was Rev Dr Misicki but in February 1902 he left for a Polish parish just being founded in Brooklyn East New York The Franciscans arshyrived again namely Father Idzi Blok OMe Regarding the parish of St Stanislaus the chronicles wrote from the time its administration was again taken over by the Franciscan Fathers it is developing beautifully and is growshying quickly Disturbances lasting for five years (1897-1902 under the secular priests) ceased from the time when Bishop McFaul granted the wishes of the parishioners enlarging the church and giving the administration to the Fran shyciscan Fathers Financial matters also improved

In 1902 the parish had close to 200 families Up to 1902 about 100 children studied at the school Franciscan Sisters from the stricter order in Reading Pennsylvania taught there but with the arrival of the Franciscan Fathers other Franciscan Sisters came this time from Buffalo but they were soon exshypelled Therefore the pastor himself taught but the provincial of the fran shyciscan Fathers forbade him to do so recommending that he bring in sisters or a lay teacher

Therefore the Sisters of Christian Charity took over the school in 1906 there were four of them and 150 children

PARISH OF ST HEDWIG IN EAST TRENTON

Even before a parish was founded here through the efforts of the local Kazshyimierz Pulaski Society a Polish school was established in East Trenton in November 1900 Up to 100 children attended the school

Finally in July 1904 the new Polish parish of St Hedwig was founded on the eastern side of the city where close to 200 Polish families live Thus far the Poles had attended both Polish churches on the south side quite far away Rev Dr Kominek previously the chaplain of the Immigration House in New York became the first pastor he began to celebrate mass on July 51904 at the Polish school on Spruce Street that the Poles had rented since 1900

His successor Father jan Supinski had a wooden 96 by 40 foot church (that could later be used as a school) built for $9000 whose consecration took place on july 4 1905

7 PARISH OF ST JOSEPH IN CAMDEN

Camden on the Delaware River and across from the huge city of Philadelshyphia of which it can be considered a suburb is an independent city Not only does it not belong to Philadelphia but it is even a part of another state

The beginning of this settlement reaches quite far back to 1875 when Camshyden appears on the list of permanent Polish colonies The parish was not

organized until 1890 In 1890-the same year that the second Polish parish of St Stanislaus was

founded in Philadelphia-on the other side of the Delaware River in Cam- den the Polish parish of St joseph was also founded just a few months after

SI Stanislaus In January 1891 they began to collect funds and in june land on the corner

of Kaigh and Mt Ephraim Avenues was purchased In September 189 1 Father Stefan Szymanowski became the first pastor but after a few months the bishop ordered him to organize a parish in Perth Amboy New jersey So there was no shepherd until Father Feliks Szulborski from Baltimore arshyrived here at the end of 1893 But the following year he passed away He was succeeded by Father Michal Baranski in 1894 Thus far mass had been celeshybrated in a rented hall on Broadway near Kaigh Avenue Father Baranski feeling that the purchased lots were inappropriate sold them and purchased another twenty-three lots of which he sold eleven to the parish for $1600 In 1895 on one part of these lots he built a church and school out of hewn stone for $15800 he sold the rest of the lots to individual Polish fami shylies He resigned in 1901 and his successor Father Maciej Tarnowski purshychased nine more lots for 52600 to supplement the property and he built a

rectory Tha parish numbers about 500 families In 1906 six Felician Sisters taught

300 children

PARISH OF ST SZCZEPAN IN PERTH AMBOy 8

On the New York bay below the southern tip of Staten Island there are two Polish settlements with two similar names Perth Amboy and South Amboy-both in Middlesex County

When the colony increased to several families our countrymen went to the local Irish priest Father P L Connolly with a request to bring in a Polish priest from time to time The closest Polish parish at that time was the parish in New York whose pastor was Father Hieronim Klimecki This zealous priest came here each year for three years After him Father Fr X Fremel
