Renewables have a greater role for the GCC

As the world is embracing renewable energy, the Gulf Co-operative Council (GCC) is alsoundergoing a major change in the wake of economic diversification programmes, theglobal recession and the Arab Spring.

Economic analysts, Frost & Sullivan, forecasts the demand for power to double and reach 215Gigawatts by 2020. Although the GCC possesses 22.5% of the world’s proven natural gas reservesand 35% of the world’s proven oil reserves, these conventional fuel sources are not expected tomatch the pace of escalating power demand in coming years. To combat this growing demand, the GCC is reconsidering its energy mix and looking to incorporate renewable energy as asignificant contributor. As per current plans announced for renewable energy adoption, there is a25GW potential for the same in the GCC up to 2020.

Frost & Sullivan as Industry Supporter for World Future Energy Summit 2013 has authored arelevant Whitepaper entitled The Future for ‘Green’ in the GCC’s Energy Sector. TheWhitepaper focuses on the strong potential of renewables and smart grids in the GCC and alsoemphasises on the need for a focused approach to create an environment that can nurture thegrowth of renewable energy and smart grids in the region.

Adoption of renewables is expected to yield multiple benefits for the GCC. Apart fromindustrial development, renewable energy will facilitate generating jobs for skilled personnel inthis sector, and thereby reduce the high unemployment rate in the GCC. Currently, the GCC isburning up expensive oil and gas at highly subsidised rates to generate power. Renewable energy

will help in potential export of these fuels atmarket rates, allowing for a windfall for theGCC countries.

Highlighting the significance of moving awayfrom conventional energy sources, AbhayBhargava, Head, Energy & Power SystemsPractice, Frost & Sullivan , told MEP: “Usingoil and gas alone, or diesel, has been an optionto manage peak loads - however, it is not along-term solution to meet energy demands.“The demand-supply gap and abundantavailability of sunlight as a resource in the GCChas led to solar power being considered as aviable energy source to meet emerging needs. In order to cater to peak loads, the GCCGovernments have proposed new projects tomitigate the ageing power infrastructure.”

Alstom has signed a €250 millioncontract with the GeneralElectricity Company of Libya(GECOL) to supply spare parts for11 gas turbine units at fivedifferent power plant locations. The 11 GT13 turbines were origi-nally provided by Alstom. Thecontract also includes a packageof strategic spares for use acrossGECOL’s installed base.

The delivery of parts for majorinspections on six turbines isscheduled for 2013, whereas theremaining parts for the fiveturbines will be delivered in2014. The service part of the

inspection works will be partiallycarried out by ALGEC GTServices, a joint venture (JV)company established by GECOLand Alstom in 2004. The JVemploys more than 100 localemployees to service andmaintain gas turbines and

combined cycle power plants inthe country. These contracts support GECOL’s

objectives to have all thecompany’s gas power plantsoperational and re-connected tothe Libyan electrical grid, inorder to provide enough power tocover the peak summer and win-ter demands for 2013.

Alstom has a long standing rela-tionship with GECOL and hasdelivered 24 gas turbines to thecountry, which represents morethan 50 % of GECOL’s operationalcapacity.

Commenting on the award,Hans-Peter Meer, Senior VicePresident of Alstom ThermalServices said, “Alstom togetherwith GECOL are committed torestore power back to Libya. Ourservices ensure that gas plantsacross the globe continue tooperate with high efficiency andreliability.”

€250m Libya-Alstom contract New plant for Safaga

By 2020 the Egyptian Ministry ofElectricity wants to build a 1950 MWcoal-fired power plant at Safaga onthe Red Sea. On the face of it, thechoice of fuel seems inexplicable.Egypt is an important non-OPEC

energy producer. It has the sixthlargest proved oil reserves in Africa.Over half of these reserves are inoffshore reserves. Egypt’s Electricity and Energy

Minister Mahmoud Balbaa hadpreviously been reviewing oi-firedalternatives to fuel a prospectivepower station. The Egyptian electric power system

is almost entirely integrated, withthermal stations in Cairo andAlexandria and generators at Aswan. In 2006, electricity output was 115TWh, of which 72% was from gas, 16%from oil and 11% from hydro (mostlyfrom the Aswan High Dam). In 2002,consumption of electricity totaled75.719 TWh. As of 2006, totalinstalled capacity was estimated at18 GW.

A US$239 million electricity networklink with Jordan was completed in1998. In late 2002 Egypt announcedthat it would coordinate a regionalenergy distribution center to co-ordi-nate energy distribution among thenations of the region: Egypt, Jordan,Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Libya, Tunisia,Algeria, and Morocco.

Tender for 1800MW solar plant in Qatar A tender for the construction ofan 1800MW solar power plantwhich will cost between US$10-20m will be issued by Qatar inearly 2014, says a governmentannouncement.

Fahad Bin Mohammed al-Attiya,chairman of the Qatari organisersof climate talks in Doha, haspublicly commented: "We need todiversify our energy mix." Qatar is the world's highest per

capita greenhouse gas emitterand wants to mitigate this byincreasing its current levels ofrenewable energy production.

Qatar is not short of energysources. It is a significantproducer of natural gas and its

production has been increasedsince 2005.Primary energy use in 2009 in

Qatar was 277 TWh and 196 TWhper million persons. From 2007 to 2010 energy export

of Qatar have increased from 930TWh to 1,748 TWh. In three yearspopulation growth was from 0.84million to 1.76 million persons.

In 2009 Qatar was the third topcarbon-dioxide emitter per capitain the world in 2009: 79.82tonnes per capita. All emissionsfrom building, gas & energyproduction and cement-makingare local but the government hasrecently launched a ‘green’initiative aimed at improvementto its record.

Coal-fired powerplants beingdeveloped in IranIran - with the help ofmajor investment fromChina - has unveiled anambitious programme todevelop a series of coalpower generation plants.Construction will begin atthe end of thegovernment’s Fifth Five-Year Economic DevelopmentPlan (2015).

A Halifax renewable energy firm has signed a US$650 million deal with a Saudi Arabiancompany to develop a sugar cane biofuel project in Sudan. Nova Global SustainableEnergy Ltd. recently signed a joint venture agreement with Tala Investment Ltd in Doha,Qatar. The project involves cultivating 3.6 million tonnes of sugar cane on a 63,000-hectare

parcel of land in Sennar state, Sudan’s sugar cane belt. The sugar cane will be processedinto sugar for the local market and used to fuel a cogeneration facility as well as to makeethanol, energy pellets, animal feed, biological fertilizers and biodegradable packaging. We are 50-50 partners on this project, and the agreement is that the Saudi Arabian part-

ner Tala Investments is providing financing and our company is providing the managementand technical services,” George de Berdt Romilly, president of Nova Global SustainableEnergy, told MEP.The deal, including industrial, agricultural and operational costs, is worth roughly US$650

million, with anticipated annual revenues of more than US$630 million a year, he said.“It’s a tremendous opportunity for our company,” de Berdt Romilly said. “We’ll have to

ramp up hiring to actually manage this project.”De Berdt Romilly, who grew up in Kenya and Zimbabwe and whose business partners are

from Egypt and Saudi Arabia, said the project also has a strong social component.“The area in Sudan where the project is going to be developed is a very poor, remote

area where they have no water or electricity,” he said. “It will create jobs for them,we’re going to train them, and we’re also going to build a village for them, with schoolsand health clinics.”In all, the project is expected to support about 15,000 people in an impoverished area,

he said. While the sugar cane waste will be fed to animals for food, de Berdt Romilly saidthe ethanol will help address a critical fuel shortage in Sudan. “The government is lookingat biofuels because of the recent division of north and south Sudan, as 75% of the fuelreserves are in south Sudan.”

Saudi Arabia to raise its capacity to 20GWABB, the leading power andautomation technology group, haswon orders worth around US$170million to build substationprojects for the Saudi ElectricityCompany (SEC), the country’s

national power transmission anddistribution operator. ABB willdesign, supply, install andcommission a substation to helpmeet the increased demand forelectricity in and round the

central pilgrimage areaof Makkah. Thesubstation, whichdeploys ABB’s compactand robust gas-insulated switchgear(GIS) technology, willbe housed in a multi-storied building locatedin a populous andcongested area. GISsubstations have aconsiderably smallerfootprint and are said

to be ideally suited for urbanapplications in space constrainedlocations.

Based on International MonetaryFund (IMF) estimates, the Saudipopulation is set to increase fromaround 28 million at present toapproximately 37 million by 2020,with nearly 85% living in urbanareas. Saudi Arabia has amongthe highest residential electricityconsumption in the world withgrowing household, industrial andcommercial demand driven byeconomic development. Thecountry is executing an ambitiousNinth Development Plan (2010-2014) aimed at raising itsinstalled power generationcapacity by more than 20GW.

GAS-FIRED GENERATORS

MWM GmbH, based in Mannhein,Germany, has supplied six TCG2032 V16 gas generator sets to

Tekno Energy’s Bilecik Power Plant. This islocated near Bilecik, a city in north-western Turkey. Tekno Energy is an independent power

producer (IPP) and provides electricityboth to the grid operator through ‘day-ahead and balancing markets’ and to endusers. The power station based on the six TCG

2032 V16 engines operates as peak plantand assists the grid operators in balancingthe electricity market. The plant is highly flexible, reliable and

has a relatively high cycle efficiency. Itcan be synchronized to the grid within 15minutes and reaches full power outputafter 20 minutes from start button“pressing”. Reliable power plants on a short note

demand are essential to ensure supply forbuoyant economies like Turkey where

Bilecik Power Plant getsTCG 2032 V16 gas generators

power needs exceed installed localcapacity.

While Tekno Energy’s consultingengineering firm, Güncan Energy, designedthe entire power plant, helped to choosethe right equipment and co-ordinated theconstruction phase, ILTEKNO provided andinstalled the gas engines with all thenecessary auxiliaries. “MWM engines are flexible, durable and

with ILTEKNO’s local support they are anexcellent choice for a peak IPP in Turkey.”said Cigdem Güzel, project co-ordinatorof ILTEKNO group.

The new version of the TCG 2032 waslaunched in January 2012. Optimizedspark plugs and improved turbochargertechnology have made electricalefficiency of up to 44.2% possible, with anoutput of 3,333 to 4,300 KWe. The two exhaust turbochargers installed

as a standard in the TCG 2032 were fittedwith a new exhaust turbine. Now, improved efficiency on the exhaust

side automatically increases the boostpressure on the compressor side of theturbocharger. The higher boost pressure has a

particularly positive effect on the partload range when the load is adjusted. Themost comprehensive change in the newversion is the introduction of a new

controller which combines and connectsthe previously separate controllers.

Thanks to the superb operationalexperience gained from the predecessorversions, the operating time before majoroverhaul has been significantly increasedfrom 64,000 to 80,000 hours.Aftersales services such as maintenanceand repair are crucial for the operation ofthe plant, as downtimes are both lostincome and sometimes additional costburden as penalty issued for undeliveredenergy. With these considerations in mind Tekno

Energy has chosen to work with acompetent local supplier. ILTEKNO hasproven to be capable and punctual in thedesign, delivery and maintenance. Thegroup offers an inventory of spare partsand a local maintenance team.

Tekno Energy is now expanding the plantup to 40 MWe and upgrading it into acombined cycle with additional steamturbine using the exhaust gas heatrecovery and an ORC system for thecooling water heat recovery in order toincrease the output and to achieve evenhigher efficiency.

NOISE REDUCTION

Foam Techniques Ltd is the specialistmanufacturer and global supplier ofbespoke sound insulation foams and

allied materials. Often tailor-made tomeet demanding noise reduction levelsand noise performance targets, itscomprehensive material range is usedwith great success in many markets and,in particular, gen-sets & cogeneration.

Neil Blythe, Joint Managing Director, commented: “ Successful noise control ina given application will inevitably involvea combination of several different typesof mechanical and physical manipulationsthat culminate in the desired reduction ofa noisy source or component. “Making changes to operating conditions,

the design of components and systems orby active noise cancellation and evenmasking, can serve to control aero-

Acoustic Materials and Noise Control

dynamic and mechanicalaspects of a noise source,”he said. In the event that changes to

the source or componentscannot be made, or thatnoise reduction remainsunsatisfactory, then the useof specialist acousticmaterials, serve to containand dissipate the noiseenergy, he says.

In many cases, specialistacoustic insulation foamsalone - and also combined with barriermaterials - provide a low-cost method ofcontrolling noise and if correctly used canhave a significant effect on reducing theoverall noise level.

However, to achieve optimum soundabsorption, it is vital that the acousticfoam sheets, liners or kits beingrecommended, exhibit a structure whichis homogeneous and consistent. Failure to achieve this will not result in

consistent and reproducible soundreduction properties. Pre-determinedacoustic test results dictate that specialistacoustic foams are to be manufacturedfrom blocks in specified thickness and cut

within tight tolerances to ensureconsistency which is paramount for bestresults. From a physical point of view, noise can

be broken down into two main categories,Air-borne and structure-borne sound. Air-borne sound is sound which travelsthrough the air in the form ofcompressional pressure variations whichare picked up by the ear and interpretedas sound. Structure–borne sound is soundwhich travels through a solid material inthe form of vibration which is laterre-radiated as airborne sound at anotherlocation.

NOISE REDUCTION

Many types of acoustic materials may beused to control both structure-borne andairborne noise. These materials may besplit into the following four categories.* Sound Absorption* Sound Transmission Loss* Vibration Isolation* Vibration DampingPrimarily, absorption and transmission

loss (barrier) materials control air-borne noise while damping and isolationmaterials control structure-borne noise.

AbsorbersMaterials that provide good absorption of

airborne sound are typically called‘absorbers’. Absorbers are used to reducethe level of reverberant acoustic energyinside a given space and have an impacton the overall noise level both inside andoutside this space.Examples of traditional acoustic

absorbers include: flexible homogeneouspolyurethane foams and fibres, mineralwools, felts and textiles.Air-borne noise is typically absorbedthrough visco-thermal interactions thattake place when incident sound energycauses air to oscillate inside the materialstructure. Generally, homogeneous, open cell and

interconnecting foam materials that allowthe sound pressure waves in and that havea complex porous structure are suitablefor sound absorption over a much broaderfrequency range. Closed cell materials generally do not

provide good acoustic absorption but iflightweight and responsive enough, canprovide some degree of frame resonanceand visco elastic absorption, which takesplace across a much narrower frequencyband.

Transmission lossMaterials which prevent or reduce the

transmission of sound are typically called‘Sound barriers’.

Materials with good sound transmissionloss are used to contain noise within agiven space preventing it from reachingan area where high noise levels areundesirable.

Vibration IsolationVibration is the oscillatory motion of abody or surface about a mean positionand occurs to some degree in all industrialmachinery. It may be characterised interms of acceleration, velocity, displacement, surface stress or surfacestrain, amplitude and associatedfrequency.Any structure can vibrate and willgenerally do so when it is excitedmechanically (e.g. by forces generated bysome mechanical equipment) or whenexcited acoustically (e.g. by the acousticfield of noisy machinery).

Any vibrating structure will havepreferred modes in which it will vibrateand each mode of vibration will respondmost strongly at its resonant frequency.

Vibration can be controlled in a numberof ways, while the common methodsinclude the following:1. Modification to the vibration generatingmechanism (e.g. tool design, control ofpeak impact events etc.)2. Modification to the dynamic character-istics of the structure to reduce its abilityto respond to the output energy. (e.g. bystiffness or mass changes to the structure,or modification to the radiating services, such as replacing it with a mesh insteadof a flat sheet)3. Isolating the source from the body ofthe noise radiating structure by means ofa flexible decoupling material or mounts.

4. Applying vibration damping materialsthat dissipates vibrational energy in thestructure and converts it to heat. Thisrequires the use of visco-elastic dampinglayer.

5. Allying active vibrational control tomodify the dynamic characteristics of astructure

DampingThe general principal of damping has

been explained in the section VibrationIsolation.Aside from its relevance in isolationsystems, damping materials can be usedto control vibration levels in structuresand panels which are not adequatelyisolated from the excitation element. Thisis sometimes referred to as SoundDeadening. To verify the uniform structure of Foam

COMBINED CYCLE

The cost of the project in Al ZourNorth, 100km South of Kuwait city,is expected to be worth more than

US$8 billion, and includes constructionand operation of a power plant of at least1,500MW and an affiliated desalinationplant with a capacity of 464,000 - 486,000cubic metres per day.

The new plant will provide 12% ofKuwait’s total installed power generationcapacity and around 23% of its installeddesalination capacity.

The project will be jointly owned by theconsortium and Kuwaiti public entities, and the Ministry of Electricity and Waterwill purchase the facility’s output under a40-year long-term energy conversion andwater purchase agreement. The plant isexpected to begin operations in 2015.

Construction on the site has alreadybegun, reports a consortium of GDF SUEZEnergy International, Japanese tradinghouse Sumitomo Corp, and Kuwaiticonstruction company Abdullah Hamad AlSagar and Bros.

Al Zour North combinedcycle plant for Kuwait

Together, they are pooling resourncesand expertise to build this advanced jointgas-fired combined cycle power plant anddesalination plant in Kuwait. Building willbe complete within 24 months.

The plant will contribute around 12% ofthe installedgenerationcapacity. Kuwait'slong-delayed Al-Zour North powerand water plantproject is designedto produce 4,000MW of electricityand 200,000imperial gallons ofwater and itsoutput will be soldto the Kuwaitiministry of electric-ity and water undera 30-yearagreement.

In all, Al-Zour

North will boast four plants. The first twoplants are due to each have a productioncapacity of 1.5GW of power and 102million gallons a day (g/d) of desalinatedwater.

The third will produce up to 800MW ofpower and 51 million g/d of water, while

a fourth plant will produce 1GW of powerand 25 million g/d of desalinated water.

The first plant will be an independentwater and power project, while the sec-ond will be an engineering, procurementand construction project.

Kuwait’s population hit 3 million in 2010and is expected to be 5.5 million by 2025,so the exptra power and water generatedwill certainly be a welcome boost tonational supplies. The Kuwaiti governmentplans to implement US$1.8 billion worthof water projects this year, includingconstruction of treatment plants andwater pipelines and reservoirs.

Projects where the APOLO 4006lighting tower has been used havecertainly proved the product’s

quality, says Himoinsa. Sites in Qatar,Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and the UAE- as well as work involving the currentenlargement of the Panama Canal - havetested its extreme ruggedness, reportsthe manufacturer.

Each lighting unit includes a steelcanopy to protect it from harsh weather. Its surface finish of epoxy-polyesterprotects it from corrosion. It features four

galvanised stabilizers which steady thetower in irregular ground and againststrong wind gusts.

Elliptic lamps allow a more directlighting projection and create a betterlighting workplace. Each lamp can beadjusted individually without using anytools. Moreover, the mast can be turn360° permitting illumination adjust-ments.

The Linea 1 committee, consisting of theSpanish building firm FCC and theBrazilian company Odebrecht, choseHIMOINSA APOLO 4006 lighting towers toassist in the Panama underground buildingworks, expected to be finished in 2014.

Manuel Sánchez Bada, Engineering AreaManager, comments: “One of the featuresof an APOLO 4006 lighting tower whichdeserves emphasis is its autonomy. It

Himoinsa - providingpower & light for today’s operators

guarantees 60 hours of continuousoperation, offering a high performancequalities.”

The manufacturer, Himoinsa, can offer30 years’ experience in the energymarket. In its capacity as a verticalmanufacturer, the company has launchednew generating sets to the market, suchas the new 10-foot 500kW container [seepic right].

The main feature of this generator set isits size. The product was launched ontothe market with a 50kW power source - itis easy to locate in reduced space proj-ects, where a 20-foot container is notanoption. There are even more advantagesin this new product, for instance, the CSCcertification - International Conventionfor Safe Containers - which allows twounits to be transported by sea, instead ofa single standard 20 feet.

Another new product in Himoinsa’sRental Range will be presented at theMiddle East Electricity MEE Show, fromFebruary 17th - 19th, 2013. This is theDUAL FREQUENCY container HRTW 1300,[left] described as ‘perfect for IPPapplications’ (Iterim Power Platforms),

perfect for applications such as rental, mining, building, quarries and ports, etc.

With the dual frequency value, the samemachine can work with 50Hz as well as60Hz. This generator is said to satisfy theneeds of the rental and building marketand heavy duty applications.

For this reason, it offers severalimportant advantages in comparison withother sorts of products operating in thissegment. Among its elements, there is avariable speed fan to reduce the fuelconsumption and sound emission, and aninside lighting system, to guarantee aneasy cleaning and maintenance.

Used in industrial projects in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and the UAE, Himoinsa’sAPOLO 4006 lighting towers work in extreme environments. The tower’s elliptic lamps provide

improved lighting projection and better illumination for the workplace, says the maker.

POWER PLANTS

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) hasbeen contracted to build theUS$3.12 billion 2.7-gigawatt power

plant known as Jeddah South, howeverMitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) will besupplying specialist equipment andturbines for the oil-fired plant.

The construction of the plant meansSaudi Arabia, the world's largest crudeexporter, has plans to continue to burnmillions of barrels a week of oil for powergeneration - for years to come.

Upon completion, the power plant willbe able to produce enough electricity forabout 2m people or 5% of Saudi Arabia’sentire power generation capacity.

Saudi Electricity Co (SEC) expects themore efficient plant, to burn much lessfuel oil per unit of electricity produced.

"For the first time we will be using super

MHI’s supercriticalboilers are key to Jeddah South

critical boilers in the Kingdom which havea higher efficiency, reaching up to 40%efficiency in fuel consumption," SEC'schief executive Ali bin Saleh al-Barrakcommented.

Supercritical technology is said to havemainly evolved over the past 30 years.Advancements in metallurgy and designconcepts have made supercriticaltechnology units extremely reliable andhighly efficient. Modern supercriticaltechnology is largely available in Japanand Europe for Boilers & Turbines rangingupto 1000 MW.

Supercritical steam conditions improvethe turbine cycle heat rate significantlyover subcritical steam conditions. Theextent of improvement depends on themain steam and reheat steamtemperature for the given supercriticalpressure.

A typical supercritical cycle features aturbine throttle pressure of 242 bar withtemperatures for main steam and reheatsteam at 565ºC and 593ºC respectively;this is said to improve station heat rate bymore than 5%. This results in fuel savingsto the extent of 5%.

Overall, a supercritical power plantefficiency of 42% is said to be achievablewith current supercritical parameters.

An improved heat rate results in 5%reduction in fuel consumption and hence5% reduction in CO2 emissions per MWhenergy output.

Typically, for 800 MW supercritical unit, the annual reduction in CO2 emission willbe about 725,000 tonnes of CO2 withrespect to baseline emissions establishedby the CEA.

Supercritical technology-based thermalpower projects are regarded as potentialcandidates for benefits under the CleanDevelopment Mechanism (CDM) estab-lished by United Nations FrameworkConvention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

An oil-fired power plant at Shuqaiq -of approximately the same size as MHI’slatest Jeddah South contract - will bebuilt in late 2013, reports SEC’s al-Barrak.Technical bids for the 2,600 MW Shuqaiq,a supercritical fuel oil plant fitted withsulphur-removing technology, are due inthe first quarter of 2013.

The state-run company, SEC, also plansto spend around US$35 billion on highvoltage power lines, with another US$25billion spent on distribution networks overthe next 10 years.

TRI-FUEL POWER PLANT

Initially, the plant will operate on heavyfuel oil, but the fuel flexibility ofWärtsilä’s engine technology will

enable a seamless transfer toenvironmentally sustainable natural gasoperation once the infrastructure for anatural gas supply is in place. When in operation, the Wärtsilä technol-

ogy ensures that the plant’s use of waterwill be close to zero, which adds to itsenvironmental sustainability. The overallcontract is valued at US$552 million, ofwhich Wärtsilä’s share is US$334 million.

Wärtsilä’s consortium partner is SouthKorean based Lotte Engineering &Construction, a major player in the Asianconstruction industry. The order has been placed by Amman

Asia Electric Power, a special purposeindependent power producer, in whichWärtsilä has a minority interest. The other owners of the company are

Korea Electric Power Corporation of SouthKorea (KEPCO) and Mitsubishi Corporationof Japan. The project company will supplyelectricity to the National Electric PowerCompany of Jordan (NEPCO) under arecently signed 25 year power purchaseagreement. The electricity will be fed tothe Jordanian national grid.

The plant will be powered by a total of38 Wärtsilä 50DF multi-fuel engines, which in reference conditions produce 632

TURBINES FOR IRAQ

The customer behind this majorturbine deal for Iraq is the KARConstruction and Engineering

Company Ltd., which is building theKhormala plant for the independentpower producer KAR Group headquarteredin the city of Erbil. Commissioning isscheduled for mid-2013. The four-unit Khormala gas turbine power

plant is located 25 kilometres south ofErbil, the region's capital, which fallsunder the administrative authority of theKurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

With an installed electrical generatingcapacity of 640MW, this is the first majorpower plant project for the KAR Group, who will also operate the facility. Plant output is enough to meet roughlyone quarter of the region's powerdemand, delivering electricity to overfour million people.

The SGT5-2000E is regarded as anextremely well-proven, robust engine forthe 50Hz market used for simple orcombined cycle processes with or withoutcombined heat and power, and for all loadranges, particularly peak-load operation.

For Integrated Coal GasificationCombined Cycle (IGCC) applicationsSiemens offers its SGT5-2000E (LC) unit.Besides the application in power plants, the SGT5-2000E can also be used for

New Siemens gasturbines for Khormala, Iraq

different applications in the oil and gasindustry. The compressor drive design, derived

from proven standards, can be used - forexample - for the production of LiquifiedNatural Gas (LNG) – either as a directmechanical compressor drive or as an all-electric generator version.

The SGT5-2000E has a record fortoughness and durability with more than300 units in operation and over 6.4 millionoperating hours.

A spokesman for Siemens commented:“The 168-MW 50 Hz model, theSGT5-2000E, is a heavy-duty gasturbine designed for reliable, efficient, and flexible operation. Over 6.4 millionoperating hours of experience with300 SGT5-2000E gas turbines

have been accumulated, demonstratingtheir outstanding reliability under a widerange of operating conditions.”

According to the company, the SGT5-2000E ‘proves that it is possibleto reconcile ambitious economic andenvironmental targets’. Despite its high flexibility in terms of

operation and fuels, the NOx and CO2emissions of a SGT5- 2000E have beenminimised. The SGT-2000E series can be fired with

a wide variety of fuels, from low- to high-calorific gaseous and/or liquid fuels, including treated heavy oils.Off-board combustion is said to eliminate

any direct flame radiation on theturbine blading, and the long dilutionpath allows for long service intervalsand high availability of the hot gascasings.Siemens gas turbine packages have been

delivered to Iraq pre-assembled, includingpiping and wiring. The auxiliary systemsare combined in groups and installed asprefabricated packages. This reducesinstallation and commissioning time andexpenditure, says the company.

FUEL OIL POWER PLANTS

The first phase of the project willstart producing 604 MW in July2013. SEC's President & CEO Ali S.

Al-Barrak tells MEP: "We have long-termand short-term plans to meet futurepower demand as we have forecast forthe next 20 years and confirmed demandfor five years."The Rabigh IPP is a flagship project

launched by SEC in 2009 structured on aconcession or utility outsourcing contractmodel financed using a limited recourse, project finance framework. The plant isscheduled for completion in late 2014.

This project, which was awarded to theconsortium of ACWA Power Internationaland the Korean Electric Power Company(KEPCO) who combined own an 80% shareof the project and 20% owned by SEC.

This is the first step in SEC's plan toopen up ownership and operations to theprivate sector to in turn support it tomeet the rapidly increasing demand forpower in Saudi Arabia between 2009 and2020. It is also the first project in the Middle

East based on Chinese technology andimplemented by a Chinese contractor, theconsortium of Dong Fang ElectricCorporation and SEPCO III.Rabigh 2 is a green field heavy fuel oil

power plant, the fourth project in SEC’s

Rabigh 2 is Saudi Arabia’slatest fuel-oil power plant

IPP program. It is located 175 kilometresnorth of Jeddah on the west coast of theKingdom.

Samsung and Alstom are the selectedengineering, procurement andconstruction contractors, while theelectricity generated by the plant will besold via a 25 year power purchaseagreement to SEC.

TAQA, whose controlling shareholder isthe Abu Dhabi government, also owns aninterest in the 250 MW Jubail power plantin Saudi Arabia.Yokogawa Saudi Arabia has also been

selected as the process control systemsupplier for the Rabigh II project, in whichSaudi Aramco and Sumitomo Chemicalhave also invested.

Yokogawa will supply its flagshipproducts, the CENTUM VP production con-trol system and the ProSafe-RS safetysystem for the complex. With phases I andII combined, this is the largest project forwhich Yokogawa has been selected in theMiddle East.By expanding the ethane cracker and

building a new aromatics complex, theRabigh II project will use an additional 30million standard cubic feet per day ofethane and approximately three milliontons per year of naphtha as feedstock to

produce a variety of high value-addedpetrochemical products. Each plant will be brought on stream as

it becomes available for operation, begin-ning the first half of 2016.Rabigh is located on the east coast of the

Red Sea between latitudes 22/23 north ofthe equator. It experiences extreme heatin the summer where studies record amaximum temperature in July and Augustand September of 36° - 38°C, often peak-ing at a maximum temperature degree of45°C. The climate is characterised by highrelative humidity, especially in thesummer, which can adversely affectsystems and equipment.

The Rabigh 2 project has absorbed US$2.5 billion in funding and has resulted in thedevelopment of.a new power plant with a net capacity of around 1,204 MW in Rabigh,

strategically-located about 130km north of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, reports MEP.

GAS TURBINES

As the largest and most energy-efficient power and water plant inDhofar in southern Oman, the

Salalah IWPP is projected to play a majorrole in meeting the growing power andwater demands of this region.

Peak power demand on the Salalahsystem has been forecast by OPWP togrow by 10% per year, rising from 348MWlast year to 690MW in 2018. With demandlikely to be so substantial, OPWP hasretained the option to increase theelectricity output at the new plant ifrequired.

Acceptance tests for the US$1 billionSalalah Independent Water & Power Plant(IWPP) in Oman have been successfullycompleted.

The plant was built thanks to a jointventure between Sembcorp Industries'swholly-owned subsidiary SembcorpUtilities, the Oman InvestmentCorporation and Bahrain-based InstrataCapital.

It will provide power and water under a15-year power and water purchaseagreement with the Oman Power & WaterProcurement Company, which is whollyowned by the Oman government.

The IWPP consists of a 490 MW gas-firedpower plant (based on 6FA gas turines)and a seawater desalination plant with atotal water production capacity of 15MIGD (69,000 m³/d).

The first phase of the project wascompleted in July 2011, within a tighttimeline of 19 months from the signing ofthe power and water purchaseagreement. The second phase was subse-quently completed in the first quarter of2012. With the completion of this thirdand final phase, the plant has commencedfull commercial operations.

Part of the Salalah is a 15 MIGD (69,000

m3/d) Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO)plant. The CO2 system for the SWRO planthelps in re-mineralising the desalinatedwater produced. To make RO-treated

water drinkable, it is carbonised so thatminerals can be dissolved at the calcitefilters.

At Salalah, the required CO2 will beproduced onsite by natural gascombustion. During this process, thereleased CO2 will be recovered andconverted into food-grade quality by aPentair Haffmans’ CO2 recovery system.

“On-site production of CO2 is a superiorsolution over purchasing it from anexternal supplier as the nearest is inMuscat, which is more than 1,000kmsfrom the Salalah plant,” explained RoySpee, Pentair Haffmans Product ManagerCO2 Systems. “Producing CO2 on-siteeliminates transportation costs andguarantees the availability of food-gradeCO2.”

The completion of the Salalah IWPP willaugment Sembcorp’s portfolio in theMiddle East, where it has been operatingsince 2006. Within the region, Sembcorpalso owns, operates and maintains theFujairah 1 Independent Power and WaterPlant – one of the world’s largest operat-ing hybrid desalination plants – in theUnited Arab Emirates.

Saudi Aramco, the government-ownedSaudi Arabian Oil Company whichproduces, manufactures, markets

and ships crude oil, natural gas and petro-leum products to meet global demand, has invested in a US$2.76 billion projectat Shaybah oil field. The development required additional

power to enable an increase in oilproduction to one million barrels a dayand a 5 – 6% increase in gas extractionevery year. To achieve these production levels SaudiAramco required a large-scale installationof generator sets on site to be tenderedvia the main contractor, SamsungEngineering Ltd. The project was secured in May 2011 by

the sole FG Wilson Dealer in Saudi Arabia,Tamgo, for the supply of 128 generatorsets ranging from 13 – 750 kVA. Tamgo

Saudi Aramco orders 128gen-sets from FG Wilson

supplied the large volume of FG Wilsongenerator sets, which will be operating inextreme weather conditions, includingambient temperatures of 55°C and regulardust storms. The FG Wilson generator sets are

providing power to the compound for theresidencies, offices and construction sitefor the extraction of natural gas. SamsungEngineering Ltd also delivered 11 new gas-turbine generators and 44 compressorswhich will now generate an additional 729megawatts of power at Shaybah. This willpower a new plant capable of processing2.4 billion cubic feet of gas per day and264,000 barrels of liquids destined forSaudi Arabia’s growing petrochemicalssector. Responsible for the supply, delivery and

commissioning of the 128 generator sets,Tamgo travelled over 1,200 km to theoperating site three to four times permonth to co-ordinate the project andconduct ongoing maintenance andservicing with the generator setsoperating in such harsh conditions. Tamgo’s expertise and high customer

service levels has led to an ongoingcontract with Saudi Aramco whichrecently increased its order to 140generator sets in total.

Tamgo’s outstanding commitment to sup-port and maintain the installation of thegenerator sets since the project began in2011 has led to a long-term relationshipwith Saudi Aramco. With more orders onthe horizon, this project is due to becompleted in 2016. Islam Fathy, Product Manager at Tamgo,

comments: “We are pleased to say wehave designed, delivered andcommissioned 140 generator sets onsite atpresent – all without a hitch. We aredelighted to have forged a long term rela-tionship with Samsung Engineering andSaudi Aramco which we hope will continuelong into the future.”

Edward Jung, Cost Engineer of ShaybahNGL Recovery & Utilities Project (Package#2) at Samsung Engineering, comments:“Saudi Aramco had a large project andneeded a company that was capable toinstall a quality, cost effective solution incomplex weather conditions. “FG Wilson and Tamgo have proven

expertise in delivering large scale projectswith success, so we had no doubt theywould be the perfect partners to deliverthis project seamlessly.”
