Lisa spent more than twenty years searching for relief from debilitating migraines so easily triggered that they robbed her of the everyday activities she enjoyed – music, dancing, getting coffee with friends, even simply running errands. “Your world gets smaller,” she says, “It’s demoralizing… the things you want to do to make yourself feel better make you feel worse.”

Through our doors, she finally found answers from a team of Brigham and Women’s neurologists that employ a unique combination of compassion, experience and innovation. HERELobón Joins BWFH, BWH Emergency Medicine

Each year Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Emergency Department treats approximately 25,000 patients and has undergone some amazing transformations over the last few years in order to accommodate the growing demand. Gone are the days of long wait times and frustrating registration forms. In their place are quick registration and rapid assessment processes that ensures patients will be quickly evaluated by a physicians or physician’s assistant no matter what time they arrive. These processes allow staff to more quickly begin the process of medical evaluation and initiation of tests and/or treatments.

“When you come to Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Emergency Department, you shouldn’t have to wait a long time to be evaluated and seen by a physician,” states Chief of Emergency Medicine Dr. Luis Lobón. “At our Emergency Department, we recognize that patients come here when they’re in a tremendous amount of discomfort or experiencing some type of medical emergency, which is just one of the reasons we’ve worked so hard to make this process as easy as possible for patients and their families.”

Once in Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Emergency Department, the full gamut of Brigham and Women’s care

really does open up to you. For example, if you’ve had an accident and hurt your arm, you may need an x-ray as part of your evaluation. Physicians from Brigham and Women’s Department of Radiology are right down the hall. Perhaps the MRI results require a consultation with an orthopedic specialist, which is just a few floors up as part of Brigham and Women’s Hand and Upper Extremity Service.

“From lab results and specialty services, our programs really are integrated into one system of care,” states Michael Gustafson, Chief Operating Officer at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital. “Even the physicians in our Emergency Department all fall under the Department of Emergency Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital so when you come here, you know you’re getting the very best care possible but in a more convenient and more easily accessible location for people in our community.”

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital is comprised of a dedicated team of physicians, nurses and other health professionals to provide an extraordinary level of knowledge, skill and compassion to every patient we serve, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Dr. Luis Lobón has recently been named Chief of the Department of Emergency Medi-cine at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital and Vice Chair for Community Emer-gency Medicine in

the Department of Emergency Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In these roles, Dr. Lobón will oversee patient care and operations in the emergency department at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, as well as community-based emergency medicine practices. He will work with leaders in Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Emer-gency Department to increase collabo-ration, communication and consistency of the patient experience across both institutions. Dr. Lobón was most recently chief of Emergency Medicine for Cambridge and Somerville Hospitals and interim chief for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Cambridge Health Alliance. He has extensive experience in clinical, administrative and leadership roles in emergency medicine. He has received numerous awards and honors, includ-ing a resolution by the Cambridge City Council recognizing his advancement of emergency care at the Cambridge Health Alliance. Dr. Lobón received his medical degree at the University of Cantabria in his native country of Spain and completed his emergency medicine residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He received his Masters Degree in Health Management and Finance at the New York University Wagner School of Public Health and advanced training in health policy analysis and biostatistical methodology at Cornell University.

Weight management and bariatric surgery:

If you’ve struggled with trying to achieve weight loss, you probably know that there are a wide range of weight loss approaches, including lifestyle changes, medical therapies and surgical treatments. However, what may be ideal for one person may not be right for another.

“Many people who struggle with excess weight are unsure which direction to take in order to lose weight,” explains Dr. Florencia Halperin, Co-Director of the Center for Weight Management and Metabolic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and

Chief of Endocrinology at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital.

Defined as having a body mass index of 30 or higher, obesity can be a contributing

factor in developing many medical problems, including high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels and type 2 diabetes. “Making the decision to learn more about the different options available for weight loss is a very important first step for a patient to take,” continues Dr. Halperin. For those patients who end up requiring surgery to reach their weight loss goals, Brigham and Women’s Center for Metabolic Health and Bariatric Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital offers a wide range of surgical options. The Center for Metabolic Health and Bariatric Surgery is a full service, comprehensive Level 1A Center of Excellence accredited by the American College of Surgeons. “Our bariatric surgery programs offers quality care to every patient and a plan

Just listen to the words of patient Carrie O’Neil Smith:“I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and I was overwhelmed, swimming in a vortex of fear and uncertainty. I had a friend who had just gone through breast cancer treatment at the Faulkner, and she insisted I go there. I was prepared to trade bedside manner for expertise, but quickly realized that wouldn’t be necessary. When I sat down for the first time with Peggy Duggan [Chief Medical Officer and breast surgeon], I was blown away. She put me at ease, answered all my questions, and made me feel like I was her only patient that day. In fact, the entire staff is extraordinary. With Dr. Duggan as the ‘quarterback,’ my treatment is seamless. My caregivers advocate for me, educate me, support me, hold my hand, and collaborate with me. I just can’t say enough about the experience—I am so grateful.”

The Comprehensive Breast Health Program, where Carrie received her care, has earned a reputation as the go-to center in New England and beyond for leading-edge, patient-centered breast care. This award-winning care wouldn’t be possible at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital today without philanthropy.

Patient-centered care and innovation are the heart of what we do. From groundbreaking treatments that provide new hope for patients like Carrie, to pioneering research and extraordinary educational opportunities that promise to improve outcomes for the patients of tomorrow.
