Writing Your Presentation

What are the aims of your speech?

How long have you got?

In a single speech, choose four or five key points you want to convey – a speech is more effective if a listener has to concentrate on a few points.

Writing Your Presentation

Structure is important – you must have an introduction, middle and an end.

It is important to have a good clear beginning to grab the attention of the audience.

Keep your introduction short and to the point. If listeners lose interest at this stage you may never regain it for them.

Writing Your Presentation

Go into the main body of your talk as quickly as possible and be clear on what information you are conveying – this may mean repetition of key words.

Writing Your Presentation

Don’t be afraid of referring to your audience as ‘you’ – make speech more personal and more real to those who are listening.

Avoid using jargon. Long and unusual words could baffle your audience rather than impress them.

Writing Your Presentation

Use short sentences – long sentences can be difficult for the listener to follow.

Humour is a good way to relax you and your audience if done properly – practice before using in speech!

Be enthusiastic – think about all the positive things you are saying and why you are saying them – make sure they come through in your speech.

Don’t let nerves or stress make your speech too formal – be natural!

Writing Your Presentation

Many speeches will end in a call for action – make sure you explain to your listeners carefully what it is they have to do.

If your speech is shorter than the time allowed, don’t ad lib – this could change the structure of your speech.

Writing Your Presentation

If you are having question time at the end, have an emergency piece of information prepared in the event of no questions being asked.

You may want to thank listeners for listening – this is a definite full stop and make you personable!

Remember to…

Write out full speech then cut it down until you have key points only on cue cards.

Number cue cards in case you drop them.

Use A4 paper if sitting down or standing at a lectern.

Write your speech as you speak – not as you write!
