One night, Jamie and his mother Sandra discover that their neighbor and Jamie’s classmate Ste has been kicked out of the apartment and has nowhere to spend the night; Jamie lets him stay at his place, and a casual closeness eventually stirs sexual feelings. While both were vaguely aware they might be gay, neither had ever acted on their impulses, and once Jamie and Ste decide that they're attracted to each other, neither is sure just what to do. Meanwhile, everyone is a bit puzzled by their neighbor Leah, a teenager obsessed with the life and music of Mama Cass Elliott. My Beautiful Laundrette >>> (directed by Stephen Frears, 1986) Hanif Kureishi received an Oscar nomination for his screenplay for My Beautiful Laundrette, a stunning portrait of two boyhood friends struggling to survive in racially tense Thatcher-era Britain. Omar, a Pakistani, and his old school chum Johnny, now hanging with white skinheads, use stolen drug money to renovate a laundrette in a squalid London neighborhood. But conflicting interests and loyalties, including secret affairs, soon threaten their newfound success. <<< The Incredibly True Adventure of 2 Girls in Love (directed by Maria Maggenti, 1995) This endearing romantic comedy about two high school girls -- white, blue-collar tomboy Randy, and privileged, popular, African-American Evie -- chronicles the odd couple's relationship from tentative first steps to full-blossoming romance. Cast almost entirely with newcomers, The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love brings Randy's family (a lesbian aunt and an assortment of current and past partners), Evie's well-heeled and overprotective mother, and a collection of friends, enemies, one ex-boyfriend, and one unsatisfactory affair into the mix, balancing the excitement and passion of adolescent romance with the pitfalls of social and familial rejection. Still, it maintains a light and quirky tone throughout. The Watermelon Woman>>> (directed by Cheryl Dunye, 1996) While doing research for a movie about a forgotten African-American actress, black video- store clerk Cheryl (writer-director Cheryl Dunye, playing herself) discovers that her subject shared a secret love affair with a white female director. In a stroke of intergenerational coincidence, Cheryl soon finds herself in love with a white woman. The movie captured the Teddy Award for Best Feature Film at the 1996 Berlin International Film Festival.
