A. Types of Stratification systems

1. Caste System

A. An ascribed status system B. Effort and talent can improve life

within the caste, but not elevate you to another level.

C. Exogamy- practice that allows one to marry outside his or her caste.

D. Endogamy- practice that allows only for one to marry within his or her caste.

2. Class system

A. System based on achieved status

B. Bourgeoisie and proletariat are examples of classes.

B. Dimensions of Social Stratification

1. Wealth

Made up of assets

Assets are the value of everything the person owns.

Income is the money earned through salaries, investment returns, or other capital gains.

2. Power

The ability to control the behavior of others, with or without their consent

3. Prestige

a) The respect, honor, recognition or courtesy an individual receives from other members of society.
