Fourteen medical facilities have been granted
permission to conduct medical health check-ups for expatriate workers seeking employment in the Kingdom, CEO of National Health Regulatory Authority Dr. Maryam Al Jalahma siad yesterday.
The list of private medical facilities will be announced on the web portals of the eGov, LMRA, and the Ministry of
Health soon, she said.Dr. Al Jalahma also outlined
a range of requirements that medical facilities must fulfil in order to qualify for the service. These standards cover different operational and administrative aspects, including inspection facilities, laboratories, and high-tech medical devices and X-ray machines.
From a technical aspect, CEO Al Jalahma also highlighted that private medical facilities will utilise an integrated electronic
system to transfer medical results and data directly to the Ministry of Health. This will allow the Ministry to process applications swiftly, while improving coordination with the LMRA, the entity responsible for issuing residency permits in the Kingdom. Al Jalahma spoke of the ongoing coordination amongst various government departments as part of the preparatory work for the new system.
She said that new measures concerning expatriate health checks will reduce the waiting time to receive an appointment from three months to just one week. The timeframe currently required to issue a medical certificate will also be reduced from one month to one week following the completion of health checks. Two types of services will be available for health checks at private medical facilities: Standard and premium.
Under standard service, appointments are given based on availability across approved private medical facilities. The service will cost BD20.
Under premium service, an employer is allowed to choose from a wide range of private medical facilities. It includes medical services and other services such as transportation and customer care assistance. The cost is subject to the standard rate of the medical facility (service provider).

Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa yesterday honoured the winners of the Third edition of the ‘Bahrain Award for Entrepreneurship’ highlighting the need to form strategic public and private partnerships to “overcome

Bahrain will now work more closely with United Nations
Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to improve the lives of children, a senior UNICEF representative said.
UNICEF will be holding talks with organizations in Bahrain in the coming months to assess how Bahrain can help the development of children; the UN body will also be holding events and workshops on the subject, said Dr. Ghassan Khalil, a senior advice for Middle East and North Africa.
Commencing the series of activities in the Kingdom on Dr. Ghassan delivered a lecture about the UN Convention on the rights of the child at Isa Culture Center on Wednesday evening.
“The lecture was solely on the convention but in later events we will talk about Bahrain and the practical steps that the country can take to improve the lives of children,” he told DT News.
“Yes it has been planned to have more events. It will be announced soon,” he said.
Explaining more about the convention he said, “It is a convention that was taken up by the General Assembly of the United nations in 1989.
During the lecture I spoke about how we can utilize this convention how it is a tool for betterment of the future of children. I shared how to utilize the convention and how rights based programs can create a better environment for children.”
Dr. Ghassan Khalil said that it is important for schools and universities to learn from the convention.
“The purpose of education is the development of the child. Education should not be at the expense of violating the rights of the child. So education should not only focus on creating workforce for the economy, it should also focus on personality development and other aspects. It is not about the number of children enrolled in schools, its the quality of education that
matters, “ he said. The lecture was organized
by United Nations office in Bahrain in collaboration with Isa Cultural Center.
Speaking on the occasion Amin El Sharkawi, United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative said that UNICEF is expected to be ‘active’ in Bahrain.
“I would like to welcome back, UNICEF, they have been very active in Bahrain for many years. Recently, we have missed them for a few years when their activities here were limited, but now they are back again and will continue to be active. This is one of the first events being organized following the signing of the Strategic Partnership Framework Between Kingdom of Bahrain and United Nations,” he said.

Focus on Flexible Work PermitManama
The CEO of Bahrain’s Labour Market Regulatory
Authority (LMRA) and Chairman of the National Committee for Combating Trafficking in Persons, Ausamah Alabsi, this week participated in the ESCAP Regional Preparatory Meeting for Global Compact on Migration held in Bangkok.
The event was organised by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. Bahrain was invited to participate in the event following the introduction of the Flexible Work Permit (FWP) - a ground-breaking new programme in the region designed to boost the Kingdom’s private sector while ensuring concrete protections for expatriate workers in the
Kingdom.The FWP will enable
expatriates who meet certain conditions to work and reside in the Kingdom of Bahrain without a sponsor in any job, full or part-time, and with more than one employer, for a renewable two-year period.
The ESCAP Regional Preparatory Meeting also included a special forum during which the LMRA’s CEO outlined key advantages of the FWP system. Several international representatives attended the forum, including the Regional Coordinator for
the Migrant Forum in Asia, senior labour migration specialists at the International Organisation for Migration, as well as the Undersecretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Migrant Workers Affairs in the Philippines.
Speaking on the occasion,
the LMRA’s CEO highlighted Bahrain’s commitment to international best practices that facilitate opportunities for businesses and workers in equal measure.
The CEO noted that international collaboration is central to the development
of innovative labour market practises, highlighting that the UN has cited Bahrain’s FWP as one of a number of successful international programmes which informed the Global Compact on Migration (to be adopted following the 2018 International Migration Conference).
The CEO concluded by stressing that international recognition of the FWP reflects Bahrain’s long-standing commitment to increasing its international and regional competitiveness through modern and effective regulatory frameworks.
He went on to say that the LMRA will continue to work hard to safeguard the rights of expatriate workers in the Kingdom and to strengthen partnerships with international organisations.

A few months ago, I had searched for a DVD on Google. It was for an episode of an old TV series
called ‘Twilight Zone’ that I’d wanted to watch again. And within an hour or so, when I open my
Facebook page, I see advertisements for ‘Twilight Zone’ DVDs, among the posts.
A few days ago, I met a man for some official discussion. And then saved his phone number and email address on my mobile phone.
And in a couple of days, Facebook is showing me his profile, and prompting me to add him as a friend, saying he may be among PYMK (people you may know).
There. That is today’s online privacy, for us!But, here is something more shocking!“Facebook wants to pre-emptively prevent revenge
porn on its platform by gathering nude images and videos of its users, raising privacy concerns among its 2 billion users” according to an article “Why Does Facebook Want Your Nude Photos?” ( Newsweek, 8 Nov 2017).
The social networking giant is going for a trial with “this feature in Australia, asking users to send in naked photos of themselves via Messenger that could be uploaded by someone without the owner’s consent”.
“Facebook said it plans to use the images to build a database of specific photos it can then block from being uploaded to the site in future. If successful the trial will spread to the United States, as well as the U.K. and Canada”.
Is this not a crazy idea? But, let us give it some thought anyway.
With mobile phone cameras in the hands of young people, foolishness can reign. And when foolishness is coupled with apps like Snapchat, which promise a false sense of security, inappropriate images may get transferred. And when such images get transferred, the sender becomes vulnerable.
And to protect the sender, Facebook is now asking for the original.
Apparently, “This works only if you’re in possession of the original file, but it would seem to bypass any attempts from a malicious third party to alter the metadata by analyzing and tagging the actual content of the image or video.” (Facebook Asks Australia For Nude Pics To Test ‘Revenge Porn’ Defense, Forbes, 7 Nov 2017).
So, how safe will this nude collection be kept? Haven’t we heard of the cloud being hacked? Celebrities’ private photos leaked onto cyberspace? Government data all out in the open?
I am not sure of the answers. But I am sure of one thing. It is really an abnormal world we are speeding into.
We accept ‘terms and conditions’ without reading. We accept cookies, without thinking. We click on some pop-up dialogue boxes without understanding. Then, what else can we expect?
With each passing day, we are being drawn into a world, where everything is being recorded. And, it could be used ‘against’ us.
But, it is being used ‘for’ us, they argue.Google in its “Privacy Policy” says: “Our automated
systems analyze your content (including emails) to provide you personally relevant product features, such as customized search results and tailored advertising.”
With geo-tagging, if our ‘location services’ are enabled, all our photos are saving our exact location too.
And Google knows every place we had been to and can give us our full travel history even if we have forgotten it ourselves.
The technological-networking noose around us is tightening. And there really seems to be no way out.
Orwell’s ubiquitous cameras, through which ‘Big Brother’ watched, are already replaced. By the now omnipresent smart devices.
Corruption: Saudi detains 201Riyadh
Saudi Arabia announced yesterday it has detained
201 people as part of a sweeping probe, estimating that at least $100 billion has been misused through embezzlement and corruption in past decades.
The kingdom’s Attorney General Saud al-Mojeb said in a statement that 208 people had been called in for questioning since Saturday evening, and that seven people were released without charge, leaving 201 people still in detention.
The figure released by the government is far larger than previously reported as it appears more arrests were made throughout the week.
Overnight Saturday, when the surprise arrest began, 11 princes and 38 officials and businessmen had been detained. They are being held at five-star hotels across the country, including the Ritz-Carlton in Riyadh.
Among those detained
are billionaire Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and two of the late King Abdullah’s sons, including Prince Miteb who until Saturday had headed the powerful National Guard before he was ousted and detained.
The crown prince is leading the probe as the head of a newly-formed anti-corruption committee.
“The potential scale of
corrupt practices which have been uncovered is very large,” the attorney general said, adding that based on investigations over the past three years, at least $100 billion has been misused through corruption.
The government has declined to name the individuals being questioned, saying it is respecting their
privacy during this phase of the process.
An estimated 1700 bank accounts have been frozen belonging to individuals. Al-Mojeb confirmed that action was taken to suspend personal bank accounts, but did not disclose any figures. The government has stressed that only personal banks have been frozen, leaving
companies and businesses so far untouched.
UAE examines accountsSaudi Arabia’s crackdown on corruption has spread beyond its borders as regulators in the United Arab Emirates ask UAE banks for information about Saudi citizens detained in the investigation, a possible prelude to freezing their accounts.
The UAE central bank has requested commercial banks and finance companies in the UAE to provide details of the accounts of 19 Saudis, commercial bankers said on Thursday, declining to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter.
Commercial bankers said UAE authorities had not explained why they wanted the information, but believed the authorities were acting at the behest of the Saudi government, which has said it aims to recover billions of dollars of illicit assets identified in its investigation.
The UAE, particularly its most commercially prominent emirate Dubai, is one of the main places where wealthy Saudis park their money abroad. In addition to bank accounts, they buy luxury apartments and villas in Dubai and invest in the emirate’s volatile stock market.
The UAE commercial bankers said they had not been asked to freeze the Saudi accounts at their institutions, but they believed the central bank’s request for information might be a prelude to such action.
The risk of the accounts being frozen “jeopardizes Dubai’s pitch as a private banking center”, said a Gulf-based banker, adding: “Banks in the UAE are full of Saudi money.” One senior banker at an international bank with business in Saudi Arabia said his institution had already frozen some accounts, both inside the kingdom and outside it, in response to Saudi government requests. French engineering giant Alstom says it has signed an agreement to deliver 14 fuel-cell trains to LNVG, a rail
company in Germany’s Lower Saxony state.
The trains will begin operating on routes between Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Bremervoerde and Buxtehude from December 2021.
Alstom said Thursday that the Coradia iLint trains will have a range of up to 1,000

Gulf stocksrebounda bit after slide
Dubai
Gulf stock markets rebounded slightly
yesterday after a jittery week in which most dropped because of concern about Saudi Arabia’s anti-corruption purge, which could reduce Saudi fund flows to the region.
The Saudi stock index spent most of the day lower before closing 0.3 per cent higher. Similar trading patterns were seen every day this week after authorities announced the arrest of dozens of senior officials and businessmen in the investigation and froze over 1,700 domestic bank accounts.
Wealthy Saudi individuals, fearful that they could be implicated in the probe, have been dumping stocks to raise cash, in some cases intending to move the money out of the country, fund managers said.
This has pushed the market down in intra-day trade but state-linked funds have bought
stocks in order to prevent a panic, pushing the market back up towards the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered decliners by 131 to 42 on Thursday. Real estate developer Dar Al Arkan, the most heavily traded stock, jumped its 10pc daily limit in its heaviest trade since July after reporting third-quarter net profit almost doubled from a year ago to 209.6 million riyals ($55.9 million), as sales more than doubled.
In a sign that the impact of the corruption crackdown might be fading, stocks in companies related to people implicated in it regained some strength.
Al Tayyar Travel, whose founder Nasser bin Aqeel al-Tayyar has been arrested, rose 2.7pc after plunging 22pc in the previous three days.
Red Sea International, whose chairman Amr al-Dabbagh was detained, gained 0.6pc.
Kingdom Holding , the investment vehicle of Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who was also detained, rebounded 1.2pc.
Most other Gulf bourses rose “Oil prices are the main reason for the rebound - oil is close to $65 a barrel and could hit $70, which is good for the whole region,” said Vijay Valecha, chief market analyst at Century Financial Brokers in the UAE. Dubai’s index gained 1.0pc as real estate developers, which sank earlier this week, recovered. Emaar Properties added 1.3pc and DAMAC Properties gained 5.0pc.
Amusement park operator DXB Entertainments rose 2.2pc after it said it would obtain a subordinated loan of 700
million dirhams ($191 million) from majority shareholder Meraas.
Abu Dhabi’s index edged up 0.2pc but Abu Dhabi National Energy Co sank 3.1pc after reporting a third-quarter loss attributable to shareholders of 194 million dirhams ($52.9 million) versus a year-ago loss of 524 million dirhams. In the second quarter, it had posted a tiny profit.
Egypt gained 1.0pc. Investment firm Qalaa Holdings surged 7.3pc in its heaviest volume since it listed in 2009. The company said it had sold its entire stake in Dice Sport & Casual Wear for about 300 million Egyptian pounds ($17.0 million). (Reuters)
Kuwaiti traders follow stock market activity as they sit in the main hall at the Kuwait Stock Exchange (Boursa) headquarters in Kuwait City
SAUDI closed 0.3pc higher at 6,954 points.
DUBAI rose 1.0pc to 3,450 points.
ABU DHABI edged up 0.2pc to 4,376 points.
QATAR climbed 0.4pc to 7,886 points.
EGYPT gained 1.0pc to 14,350 points.
KUWAIT rose 1.3pc to 6,258 points.
BAHRAIN edged up 0.1pc to 1,268 points.
OMAN gained 0.5pc to 5,055 points.

St Christopher’s Year 8 students spent the day
working on practical solutions to help an American NGO called ‘Field Ready’ who specialise in hurricane disaster relief on the ground in the Americas and the Caribbean.
In 16 groups, students
spent the day researching and creating working models to help solve issues such as obtaining potable water, providing safe storage for food and medicine and overcoming traffic and communication failure in the event of a major natural disaster.
Additionally, students were
challenged to collaborate with experts from around the globe by using Twitter and other social media to connect with professionals, other schools and NGOs. Throughout the day contact was made with experts in the US Virgin Islands, UK, New York and Hong Kong amongst others, as students
went above and beyond in their efforts to help those affected by the recent spate of hurricanes.
Students enjoyed the ‘real-life’ scenario they were asked to work on and the work they produced, for a task that is actually aimed at college and university students was highly praised by the judging panel.

The whole world knows that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is all set to play the role of DC character
‘Black Adam’, but how would the studio be planning to introduce the supervillain.
If reports are to be believed, then Johnson’s ‘Black Adam’ is thought to be appearing as the main villain in the upcoming ‘Suicide Squad 2’. While Black Adam is usually depicted as the nemesis of Captain Marvel, aka Shazam (who will get a
movie of his own in 2019), he has certainly been involved with the Suicide Squad within
the comic book world.Apparently, the current pitch for the sequel is
that it will revolve around Harley Quinn and her team trying to hunt down a lost “weapon of mass destruction.” (TOI)

Oscar-winning actor J.K. Simmons has revealed that he would happily return as
the J. Jonah Jameson in Marvel’s new franchise.
The 62-year-old-actor has shared that he loved playing Jameson and would very much like to make a return to the character in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films. While speaking in an
interview to a entertainment channel, Simmons said, “I never
say never. I mean, you know, obviously I had an amazing
time with Sam Raimi on those movies and Tobey Maguire and everybody. That was a great, great time and huge for my career and my life, and just pure fun.”
Adding, “If there were an opportunity to revisit that, I don’t know though.
How old is ‘Spider-Man’ going to be if J. Jonah Jameson is this old?” J.K Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson was so true to the character that Marc Webb’s ‘The Amazing

“I’m intimidated to be among all these stars. It’s really cool. They are having the best time, and it feels like a dream,” Laurance said in a statement.

FUEGO: ANTONIO GADES COMPANYDate : 1 December 2017, 8:00pmVenue : Bahrain National TheatreThe Antonio Gades Company, a major pillar of Spanish flamenco dance, will be presenting “Fuego”, which is inspired by the work of the late Spanish legendary composer, Manuel de Falla. The plot, choreography and lighting made by the late Antonio Gades and the Spanish film director, photographer and writer Carlos Saura. Coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the death of Antonio Gades, the foundation that carries his name decided to under-take a very significant challenge setting up another version of the Manuel de Falla’s ballet “Enchanted Love”. Titled “Fuego”, this production was the sec-ond scenic interpretation which the choreographer had of Manuel de Falla’s work. Being an exponent of Gades’ core idea “return to tradition if you want to evolve”, this ballet is a transi-tional piece between the almost mythi-cal setups in the classic plays, Carmen and Fuenteovejuna. It was also the last of the joint mythical flamenco works by Gades and Saura, with the same overlaying structure they followed in Carmen, first as a film and secondly as a ballet.

A back and forth movement similar to breathing is born from the entanglement of these two letters; the first as a breath, the second as an instru-ment. Houe literally means “the other, him,
the one who reflects my image and confirms my humanity”. It is also the root of the word identity, but beyond this first meaning, Houé (Him) is the name used by mystics to signify God. Houé’s calligraphic from, written from right to left using a qalam, a sharpened dried reed filled with ink, starts with a thick, intense, black line and narrows towards the end like a hair. The material shape of the lines forming these three successive angles complies with this logic, as does the general structure: the beginning of the second angle appears halfway along the first, the third starts halfway along the sec-ond… So it is the construction in its entirety which results from the logic underpinning it. In this respect, its development in space clearly refers to the concept of the arabesque, to that essential idea that painting, sculpture and architecture all stem from a single measurement. While the different levels that this work introduces subtly match those of the human body: the lines of the knees, the core and the solar plexus… Mehdi Moutashar was born in Hilla, Iraq in 1943. He moved to Paris in 1967, and since 1974, has lived and worked in Arles. He was a professor at Ecole National Superieure des Arts Decorantifs in Paris, from 1974 to 2008. Moutashar’s work has been exhibited
globally, in such countries as Bahrain, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany Iraq, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the UAE, and the US.

You could have some very strange yet beautiful dreams today. Write them down. They’re trying to tell you something. You could also make an off-the-wall plan to increase your income that may or may not work. Consider all the aspects of your plan and get in touch with the reality of it before delving too far.
Today you may start to see your friends in a new light. Perhaps their accomplishments have aroused your admiration. A special person could seem more perfect than ever, and you could suddenly view your friend through a romantic haze once more. Bear in mind that your view of these people only mirrors your view of yourself. You might feel a little under the weather today, but mentally you’re flying high. Ideas could keep popping into your head, sending you into flights of fancy that excite your creativity. This is a great day to read or watch documentaries or otherwise feed your intellect. Whatever you learn could be of great practical use to you later.
Today you might seek to expand your knowledge of the arts. You could decide to explore galleries, attend a concert or play, or look into the latest best sellers. A friend could accompany you. Make a day of it! Books, antiques, or other fine objects might be especially appealing now. Try to avoid shopping. You’ll discover a lot of items you like and want to buy!
Today you might have the desire to look into your genealogy. The Internet has made it possible for everyone to learn about their ancestors, and now is a great time for you to do it. Spiritually, you might also decide to explore past lives or get in touch with spirit guides or totem animals. Group activities could be of great help in these pursuits.
Practical, scientific, or spiritual ideas of all kinds are your life’s blood. Today you might expand your knowledge. Much of what you learn may be based on technology such as telescopes or particle accelerators. You’re only scratching the surface today. Much of what you learn may be confusing, but stay with it. It will make more sense to you later.
Today you might enlist the aid of friends to increase your computer skills. You may be interested in the artistic side of computers and want to experiment with computer graphics or animation. Video journalism could also be of interest. You might receive some unexpected good news about a possible increase in income, though it might be delayed.
A new romance could come your way. An old friend could suddenly seem like more to you, sending the relationship in an entirely new direction. The opposite could happen, too. An old love could reappear and resurrect the intellectual side of your relationship, making a new friend out of an old love. Circumstances around you are changing and so are you.
You’ve been exerting yourself a little too much over the past few days and might feel a little listless. Nonetheless, your mind is still active, and you may seek stimulation through books, TV, or lectures of some kind. You should find whatever you learn exciting. It could set you off in a new direction. Today you could turn into an armchair traveller!
Insights that well up from deep within you could put your imagination into overdrive. Perhaps ideas for essays, poems, paintings, or music flow into your mind in waves. You may want to stay home to develop them, though you may take one friend, or perhaps your partner, into your confidence. Keep the ideas coming! They might mean more to you later.
News about the plight of the world’s disadvantaged might have you toying with the idea of doing more than you are to make a difference. This is a laudable goal, but you’re more apt to see the romantic side of helping the needy than the harsh realities of the situation. Before deciding to tackle any new ambition today, consider it from all angles. You might change your mind.
Have you ever longed to be a movie star or participate in some way in the film industry? Today you might get your chance or at least learn some of the technical skills required. You might take some time to learn about computer graphics or the ins and outs of camerawork. You could also meet some people involved in this industry.

New Delhi
Volunteers took to the streets of India’s
capital on Thursday and placed green pollution masks over the mouths of willing residents to make a statement about the city’s choking smog.
Not everybody wanted to play along and some batted the masks away.
Authorities have closed schools and stopped most trucks from entering New Delhi this week as they try to mitigate what officials are calling a public health emergency.
New Delhi is one of the world’s most polluted cities.
The worst air quality often hits this time of year as nearby farmers burn fields, people build street fires to keep warm and winds die down.
Arun Bansal, who was helping coordinate Thursday’s effort, said the masks are not a solution but help raise awareness of the problem. He said he hopes they might make the average person in the developing nation think twice about what they are doing.
“Maybe he will not burn papers or he will discourage others who are burning all those things,” Bansal said. (AP)

While media coverage of Donald Trump’s
meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping Thursday focused on trade and North Korea, it was the wide-eyed crooning of the US leader’s granddaughter that stole Chinese netizens’ hearts.
In a video that Trump showed Xi during their stroll through the historic Forbidden City Wednesday, his granddaughter, Arabella Kushner, greets “Grandpa Xi and Grandma Peng (Liyuan)” with several Mandarin ballads and a recitation of ancient Chinese poetry.
China’s Xinhua state news agency, which circulated the clip widely on social media, reported that Xi said the six-year-old girl’s Mandarin skills deserved an “A+”.
The Chinese public agreed,
according to Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying.
“As a little ambassador of Chinese-American friendship, Arabella has already received the love of a vast number of Chinese people,” Hua said during a regular press briefing Thursday.
“This kind of special arrangement is actually very sweet and warm-hearted. We believe that this has helped to further bring closer the affection and distance between the Chinese and American people.”
Arabella also played a starring role at the state dinner organised by Xi in Trump’s honour at the Great Hall of the People on Thursday night.
The full video, which Trump brought as a gift for
Xi, was played on screens in the room, earning her a mention in her grandfather’s toast.
“Our children so often remind us of our shared humanity and true dignity,” Trump, 71, said.
Weibo, China’s Twitter-like platform, was filled with praise for Arabella’s performance Thursday.
“She’s too cute!” users gushed. “Let’s hope that she marries into a Chinese family.”
It’s not the first time Arabella has played a role in Sino-American diplomacy.
When Xi visited Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Florida resort in April, Arabella recited for Xi the “Three Character Classic”, a time-honoured text from the Song Dynasty that was also included in her latest clip. (AFP)

Britain will provide state oil giant Saudi
Aramco with a $2-billion loan guarantee to help it buy British exports, the UK government said yesterday.
The guarantee will be supplied by UK Export Finance, a state credit agency which seeks to improve the country’s trade balance by
providing finance to foreign buyers. “UKEF’s support will take the form of a $2-billion (1.72-billion euros) guarantee on bank lending,” the government said in a statement. It pointed out that UKEF had already provided Saudi Aramco with nearly £500 million in support to UK exports over the past five years. (AFP)

Syria’s army declared victory over Islamic State
yesterday, saying its capture of the jihadists’ last town in the country marked the collapse of their project in the region.
The army and its allies are still fighting Islamic State in desert areas near Albu Kamal, the last town the militant group had held in Syria, near the border with Iraq, the army said.
But the capture of the town ends Islamic State’s era of territorial rule over the so-called caliphate that it proclaimed in 2014 across Iraq and Syria and in which millions suffered under its hardline, repressive strictures.
Yet after ferocious defensive battles in its most important cities this year, where its fighters bled for every house and street, its final collapse has come with lightning speed.
Instead of a battle to the death as they mounted a last stand in the Euphrates valley towns and villages near the border between Iraq and Syria, many fighters surrendered or fled.
In Albu Kamal, the jihadists had fought fiercely, said a commander in the pro-Syrian government military alliance. But it was captured the same day the assault began.
This sealed “the fall of the terrorist Daesh organization’s project in the region”, an army statement said, using an Arabic term for Islamic State.
The fate of its last commanders is still unknown -- killed by bombardment or in battle, taken prisoner but unidentified, or hunkered into long-prepared hideouts to plot a new insurgency.
The last appearance of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who declared himself caliph and heir to Islam’s historic leaders from the great medieval mosque in Iraq’s Mosul, was made in an audio recording in September.
“Oh Soldiers of Islam in every location, increase blow after blow, and make the media centers of the infidels, from where they wage their intellectual wars, among the targets,” he said.
Mosul fell to Iraqi forces in July after a nine-month battle. Islamic State’s Syrian capital of Raqqa fell in October to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a U.S.-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias, after four months of fighting.
But all the forces fighting Islamic State in Syria and Iraq expect a new phase of guerrilla warfare, a tactic the militants have already shown themselves capable of with armed operations in both countries.
Western security chiefs have also said its loss of territory does not mean an end to the “lone-wolf” attacks with guns, knives or trucks plowing into civilians that its supporters have mounted around the world. (Reuters)

UAE closes deal for two Gowind navy corvettesDubai
The United Arab Emirates has closed a
deal to buy two French-made Gowind navy corvettes, built for coastal surveillance and anti-submarine warfare, French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday in Dubai. The deal for the
Gowind-class corvettes built by France’s Naval Group was announced at the end of a two-day visit to the UAE, an ally of France and longtime client of Western defense industries.
Macron gave no details on the deal.
The UAE in February
signed deals for arms purchases worth more than $5.2 billion, including with US company Raytheon and Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport.

Eden Hazard has fuelled talk of an imminent move from Chelsea to Real
Madrid by airing his “dream” to play for Zinedine Zidane.
The Belgian forward has long been linked with a switch to the reigning Liga champions, with his creative talents considered to be a perfect fit for the ‘Galacticos’ policy at Santiago Bernabeu.
Chelsea, though, have been able to fend off any interest in their talented playmaker, with the 26-year-old currently tied to terms through to 2020 at Stamford Bridge.
Hazard has, however, left the door open for a future transfer to the Spanish capital by admitting that he hopes to one day work with a man he idolised growing up. “Everyone knows the respect I have
for the man” Hazard told RTL on Madrid boss and former World Player of the Year, Zidane.
“For the player he was and for the coach he is, he was my idol.
“Of course I don’t know what will happen in my career in the future, but to play under him would be a dream.
“At this time, though, I’m happy at Chelsea. I still have a lot of things to do at Chelsea, and I’m focused on Chelsea.”
Hazard has also talked up the possibility of working with Jose Mourinho again at some stage in his career.
He tasted Premier League title glory under the Portuguese in 2014-15, but was then among those accused of contributing to Mourinho’s departure from Stamford Bridge the following season. (goal.com)

Friedel named England coach
I will not quit Wales duty
London
Former Blackburn and Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel
has been named as head coach of Major League Soccer side New England Revolution.
The 46-year-old, who also played for Liverpool and Tottenham, had been coaching USA’s under-19 team.
He said: “We, the staff and players, will give 100 per cent commitment to the club and our fans while looking forward to all the challenges ahead.”
Revolution finished seventh in the 2017 MLS Eastern Conference.
Friedel played in three World Cups for his country, including all
five games when USA reached the quarter-finals in 2002.

Wales captain Ashley Williams has no intention of retiring
from international football despite his side’s failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
Centre-back James Collins retired from Wales duty earlier this month.
But Williams, 33, says he plans to lead his country for future campaigns.
“It was devastating [not qualifying] but I’m enjoying the camp and, as long as it stays like that, I’m willing to give my services,” he said.
“As hard as it was to take, I’m here now and I can’t wait to be involved and, as long as it stays like that, I can’t see anything changing
any time soon.”Williams will win his 76th cap
for Wales when he leads them for Friday’s friendly match against
France in Paris.Manager Chris Coleman has
described how the former Swansea player was “broken” by Wales’ failure to qualify for the World Cup, sealed by October’s defeat against the Republic of Ireland in Cardiff.
He backed Williams to recover from that setback and from the recent dip in form he has endured at Everton.
Now he is back with his Wales team-mates, Williams is looking forward to testing himself against a French team including attacking talent such as Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann and Paris St-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe, the second most expensive player of all time. (BBC)

It appeared that fifth-seeded Jared Donaldson was ready to play
spoiler on the final day of round-robin play at the inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals. But Russian Daniil Medvedev, after overcoming a strong start by the American and his dominating forehand, kept alive his hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals, defeating Donaldson 3-4(3), 4-2, 4-3(1), 4-0.
“It was a very tough match. Jared had nothing to lose at all, played amazing the first couple of sets. I managed to halt this, it was very tough,” Medvedev said. “I’m happy with my win and I hope to be through to the semis.”
The Russian will now have to watch the evening match between fellow group members Borna Coric (2-0) and Karen Khachanov (1-1). Depending on the result and scoreline of that battle, Medvedev could advance to Friday’s semi-finals. His easiest path there would be for Coric to defeat Khachanov, regardless of the score.
If Khachanov wins, but needs five sets to do so, Medvedev will sneak in as the second semi-finalist from Group B. Since Medvedev took more than three sets to beat Donaldson,
Coric has officially qualified for the semi-finals.
“It’s going to be tough. I’m going to watch the match and unfortunately today I think I will support Borna,” Medvedev joked, as
he is good friends with Khachanov. “I’m a very calm person in life but when it’s something about winning or sports, I’m crazy… I’m sure I’m going to get crazy tonight in front of the TV.” (atpworldtour)

I still look the same: Stephens
London
US Open champion Sloane Stephens enjoyed the biggest win of her career
in New York two months ago - but says her life now is much the same as before.
“It’s not really that much different,” she told press as the USA team prepared for its Fed Cup final against Belarus. “I haven’t purchased anything, I haven’t gone anywhere - like nothing in my life has changed. Nothing new. I still look the same!”
The World No.13 retired from her second round-robin fixture at the Hengqin Life WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai, against Barbora Strycova, but is ready to compete in Minsk. After that, she is considering a holiday.
“After [the Fed Cup final] I’ll make plans to do something fun, something like that - enjoy my off-season,” she added. (wtatennis)

CoCo Vandeweghe says she was surprised at her rise into the WTA
Year-End Top 10 - and did not expect such a thrilling end to the season following her semifinal disappointment at the US Open.
“The fall season was really difficult for me,” she revealed in a conference call before this weekend’s Fed Cup final against Belarus in Minsk. “It’s very hard to find any motivation after US Open because it’s such a big tournament for the American players...I didn’t really even know Top 10 was capable from just ranking points.”
The 25-year-old lost to her Fed
Cup team-mate Madison Keys in the Flushing Meadows semifinal, 6-1, 6-2 - but of course there are no grudges as they prepare for the Fed Cup final.
“[I’m] just really happy to finish off my year with these girls,” added the new World No.10.
Missing from the USA squad is Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who is recovering from surgery following her knee injury at Wimbledon this summer - but Vandeweghe and the others are thinking of her. “Bethanie is a great girl,” said Vandeweghe. “She’d be here if she could. We miss her dearly not being able to play in the moment with us.” (wtatennis)

Ferrari “had all the tools”London
Kimi Raikkonen says it was only “small
things” that kept Ferrari from being able to win the championship in 2017.
He admitted he had taken too long to get on top of the set-up of his car early in the season.
“I think we started pretty badly the year,” said Raikkonen in yesterday’s FIA press conference, “we were not really where we should have been.”
“The personal feeling on my side, we were not very happy where the set-up was
and it took way too long to figure it out. Since that it’s been better but then we had too many DNFs for many different reasons.”
“But I think as a team we’ve come a long way from year to year and also from last year. We made a good step, obviously not enough as we want because as Ferrari we want to win both championships.”
Mercedes clinched the constructors’ championship two races ago and Lewis Hamilton secured the drivers’ title at the last round. Raikkonen
said Ferrari had the potential to push them more closely.
“I think we had all the tools this year, we just need to tidy up things and not make mistakes,” he said. “Not have any issues from any side, not from our side as the drivers or from the team side.”
“It’s small things but I think in the end they made a big part this year who won the championship and which way it went.”
“But I think we have all the people, we have the tools, we have a great
car with still two races to go,” he added. “Even if the championships are done we try to do the same work we always do and try to win races.”
Raikkonen lies fifth in the drivers’ championship with two races to go. “I think it’s very simple where we are in the championship that’s how good or bad it’s been,” he said.
“It is how it is this year. We need to learn and make better thing next year. This year for sure in many ways could have been better.” (f1fanatic.co.uk)
Bottas won’t be ‘number two’London
Valtteri Bottas says he has no intention of staying in Lewis
Hamilton’s shadow at Mercedes, as he sets his sights on a stronger second year at Mercedes. The Finn has claimed the first race wins and pole positions of his career in 2017 but found the going tougher against Hamilton since the summer break, with the Englishman racing to his fourth world title with two rounds to spare.
Bottas, who delivered an improved weekend in Mexico and ultimately
finished second, says he is determined to turn around the trend of recent months.
“In a few occasions, not as many as I would have wanted, I managed to be ahead of him,” Bottas told Sky Sports News when asked about racing Hamilton in 2017.
“Even though he is a really, really good driver and very consistent, I also need to believe in myself.“I can’t put myself in a place of number two otherwise I would rather stay at home.” (skysports)
Hamilton ‘one of the best’ in F1 history: Felipe MassaLondon
Williams driver Felipe Massa says Lewis Hamilton is one
of the all time greats in Formula 1, comparing him to legends such as Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher.
The Brazilian F1 driver said that his Compatriot Senna was an idol of his, but said that Hamilton “lacks nothing to Senna or Schumacher or any name in the history of world motor sport.”
Speaking to TV programme Bem Amigos, Massa added: “What he has shown, with the number of grands prix he has contested and the records he has already broken, is impressive...He is undoubtedly one of the best drivers in Formula 1 history.”
Speaking about his recently announced second retirement, the 36-year-old said he was happy with the way he had driven this year, but did not feel he would be able to compete for a championship going forward with his team’s car, next season. Though he had hoped for an improved car in 2018, he said: “I have information about next year’s car from inside the team. It will not
be a car to win the championship, but it is better than the last two
years, which were not competitive cars.” (eurosport)
Formula One 2021 engine rules backlash is political: Red Bull bossLondon
Manufacturer objections to the proposed 2021 Formula 1
engine regulations have a political element, reckons Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.
Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault have all expressed doubts about the regulations put forward by F1 and the FIA last week.
Horner admitted he was surprised by the negative reaction
given the manufacturers had been involved in meetings that helped shape the proposals.
“There’s been consultation with all the manufacturers,” he told Autosport.
“I don’t think there was anything that was presented that was a surprise.
“I’d heard it all before, either in individual consultation, or through what had been discussed
in the media. “What seemed to upset a couple of manufacturers was the press release that came out following the meeting - I think they were upset that it was presented as a fait accompli.
“Inevitably there’ll be some filibustering.
“And I think it’s obvious that the commercial side of the proposition is being linked to the technical. (autosport)

Rafael Nadal revealed that his troublesome knee should be good
as he heads into the season-ending ATP Finals in London next week.
The Spaniard recently withdrew from the Paris Masters before his quarter-final match with knee troubles. However, scans revealed there was no issues with the battled-hardened right knee and he was cleared to play.
“Hopefully the knee is good,” the 31-year-old told Sky Sports.
“I’ve done everything I’ve needed to do in order to get ready for London. Now it’s the moment to wait and practice at the O2 over the next couple of days. Let’s see if I am able to be 100 per cent to compete.
“If nothing happens, then I will play. I visited my doctors after the Paris Masters – it was a tough day for me having to pull out of Paris. Pulling out of any tournament in the world is tough, but pulling out of the city of Paris is especially tough for me.
“That’s how it is. I went back home and visited the doctors to do some
treatment. I expect the treatment to work and be ready for here.
“I know I’m confident because I’m having a great season with one event to go. I am here to try my best.”
The ATP World Tour Finals is one of the few feathers missing from Nadal’s cap. Twice he has been in finals, in 2010 where he lost to rival Roger Federer and then Novak Djokovic in 2013.
Nadal admits he has struggled against Federer this year and is yet to notch up a win in four matches. But that doesn’t stop the 16-time grand slam winner from dreaming.
“My dream is to win the tournament, and if I play Roger in the final then my chances are less than playing another player,” he continued
“But I would love to play in the final and if I play Roger then I will try my best to beat him.
“It’s true that I play Roger every time this year on the surfaces that are better for him, but I will just fight to win my first match of the year against him.” (foxsportsasia)
