Center for Architectural Heritage (IWAN)

To protect and maintain cultural and architectural heritage in Gaza Governorates.

To help in renovating the historic buildings to be reused for various activities. These buildings, in most cases, can be rehabilitated to use as cultural or youth centers.

To establish a technical basement for implementing studies and projects to conserve the Palestinian historical heritage.

To establish an archive for historical buildings in Gaza Strip as a part of the National Registry of historic buildings.

To enhance public awareness towards our architectural heritage.

To organize training courses, seminars, lectures, and exhibitions on the principles of traditional architecture and conservation.

To establish a local and international network of communities and organizations interested in the field of protection of cultural properties.

Location of Gaza StripIt is located south west of Palestine on the Eastern coast of the Mediterranean sea.

It is the link between Asia and Africa continents.

It is about 41 km long, and between 6 and 12 km wide, with a total area of 360

square km .

The Gaza Strip acquired its current boundaries at the cessation of fighting in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War

The territory takes its name from Gaza, its main city.

History of GazaThe known history of Gaza spans 4,000 years.

It was ruled, destroyed and repopulated by various kingdoms, empires, and peoples.

It was first built by Canaanites about 4000 years ago then it was ruled by

-Byzantines -Muslims

Historical Sites in Gaza StripArchaeological SitesThere are a number of important archaeological sites in Gaza strip refers to different periods:

-Tel al-AjjulIt is located east of Al Zahra city, south of GazaIt refers to the Bronze period (2100 B.C).

Anthidon siteIt is located north west of GazaIt refers to the Greek period (500 B.C).

Tel Umm Amer siteIt is located south of Gaza. It refers to the Roman period (fourth century).

Architectural HeritageMost of architectural heritage are located in the old city of Gaza and refers to the Islamic periods especially Mamlouks and Ottomans periods, with an age ranges between (100-1000) years.

Residential housesAbout 75% of remaining architectural heritage is residential houses refers to the Ottomans period with an age of about (200-300) years.

Centre for Architectural Heritage (IWAN) -It belongs to the Engineering Faculty at the

Islamic University of Gaza. -It was established in year 2000.

-It is the only centre in Gaza strip concerned in preserving the local architectural heritage.

Aims of IWAN Centre -Preserving the architectural and

archaeological sites in Gaza strip. -Increasing the public awareness of the

importance of the local heritage. -Training local staff on architectural heritage

preservation. -Preparing studies and researches related to

local heritage. -Reviving local handcrafts and ornaments .
