Dear Parishioners,
In the heart of the Easter Season we hear the Lord reminding us “to love one
another as I have loved you!” The love that Jesus speaks of entails more than
just saying nice words and doing things. The word used is “agape” which
means a sacrificial love; a love that forgets oneself in the service of others. C.S.
Lewis describes this love in his book ,“The Four Loves” which is a helpful guide
for Christians seeking love. The example Jesus gave of this kind of love was
shown in the washing of the feet at the Last Supper. By this humble gesture Je-
sus lives an example of his ‘new commandment” of loving one another as he
has loved us. Love is service, mostly done in silence and hiddenness. Jesus
said, “Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.” Mt 6:3
God’s love is so great. He is always working behind the scenes for us. In eve-
ry possible way he is trying to guide us to happiness and deeper love, even at
times using sufferings to open up our hearts to this powerful love. To welcome this love has to be the fundamental attitude of
the heart. Without love shown in action God’s love becomes just an illusion.
The Eucharist is given to us to help form this type of love within us, to form the Heart of Christ within us. What a tremendous
calling and how beautiful can be our responses to this love.
God is love, Fr. David
