Oil, when heated, starts to lose its film strength and its ability to keep metallic surfaces from touching. When the film strength is insufficient to withstand theload, damage to the bearing takes place leading to seizure and failure. Whenre building or modifying your car the installation of an oil cooler for the engineshould be considered, especially if the engine is being tuned for higherperformance than standard. These coolers are designed to provide the means by which oil may be cooled

by a flow of air at ambient temperature. They consist of a number of pairs ofpressed aluminium alloy plates, brazed together, forming oilways. These contain “turbulators” to break down the boundary layer effect and to obtain maximumheat dissipation without undue pressure build up. Between these oilways are corrugations to provide airways, formed to promote turbulence in the air flow topromote heat transfer. Each unit is tested to 200 p.s.i. and samples are putthrough exhaustive tests to ensure their suitability for vehicle use under all conditions. They give excellent heat dissipation for their size and weight. Theheight of the matrix is referred to in rows, these are the number of oilways including top and bottom. The brackets provide a total of eight holes 7mm diameter. The performance is dependent upon many factors, especially the volume of oil passing through the engine. The 10 or 13 row coolers are sufficientfor most engines below 2 litres, above this size select from 16 to 44 rows depending of engine size, state of tune and space available. sandWICH pLates

Any engine fitted with a full flow oil filtermay be adapted to take an oil cooler.The normal method is to fit an aluminium sandwich plate between thefilter head and the filter bowl. The sandwich plate has a seal on its topface which seals against the filter head,and is retained in position by a fittingwhich screws onto the stub which previously retained the filter bowl. Thelower end of this fitting is threaded tosuit the filter bowl. The sandwich platehas two tappings, one for hot oil goingto the cooler, and one for the cooled oil coming back from the cooler. These tappings will determine the size ofhoses you will need to connect to theoil cooler. On most engines they will be1⁄2” BSP, or 5⁄8” BSP where oil flow couldbe restricted. The effect of fitting thesandwich plate is to lower the filterbowl by 30 to 35mm, so you need tocheck that you have this space available on your engine. Sandwichplates are made to suit each engine, sowe will need to know the make of caror engine, engine size and year of manufacture. It also helps if you give usthe make and part no. of the filter inuse. Sandwich plates are availablewithout or with a built-in thermostatswitch which prevents oil being circulated through the oil cooler until ithas warmed up. To go with the sandwich plate you will need two adaptors, either 1⁄2” BSP or 5⁄8” BSP and sealing rings. These screw into thesandwich plate and provide the connection for the hoses to the cooler. Interestingly, on the BMC ‘B’ Series engine, (1962-67)there is an external oil pipe which can be removed and replaced with two 1⁄2” BSP adaptors and connected to the cooler without using a sandwich plate. This is indicative of the fact that each engine has to be considered for the best way of installingan oil cooler

WHat teMperature?

If you want to know the temperature ofthe oil after it has been cooled you canto do this by inserting an oil temperature gauge housing in a convenient position in the return linefrom the cooler. It will mean specifyingtwo shorter hoses instead of one longone, but worth it for peace of mind

oILstats

An Oilstat is designed to prevent flow of engine oil through the oil cooler until thedesired temperature is reached. Prolonged use of a car engine in conditions wherethe oil cannot reach its correct working temperature is not advised. Control of theoil flow in the Oilstat is effected by a wax filled thermostat which is set to direct oilthrough the oil cooler when the oil reaches 80˚C. No oil circulation through the oilcooler can take place until this temperature has been reached. The Oilstat shouldbe fitted in any convenient place where the oil pipes to and from the oil ccoolerrun parallel. We offer two types:

Our four mechanically operated Oil Temperature Gauges 070.028, 070.059, 070.310 and 070.340 are all supplied with an adaptor whichscrews into the these housings. The sensing bulb then screws into this adaptor. This sensing bulb is permanently connected to the gaugeby means of a 1980mm (78”) long capillary. To use our two electrically operated temperature gauges 070.008 and 070.058 you will needa sender 070.017 which screws into these housings. All you need then is a wire to connect up to the gauge. These hoses are textile reinforced, designed to work over a temperature range of -40˚C to +120˚C and up to 27.5 bar(400 psi) and comply with specification SAE 100R6 for oilhoses. The end fittings are factory swaged. Although thehoses are flexible, they will resist being forced to go aroundtight corners, keep this in mind when selecting routes andend fittings and determining lengths. Then specify to us thetype of end fittings and ‘face to face’ lengths you require.These hoses also resist twisting, so if you are using morethan one elbow on a hose it is necessary to tell us which configuration you require for one end relative to the other, asin the drawings below. The best way of installing this equipment is to purchase the oil cooler, sandwich plate,adaptors and sealing rings and when you have everythinginstalled in your car work out what length of Hoses with whatend fittings you need (see right).
