From the Desk of the Pastor
If you’ve been paying attention to the world of late, it seems to grow crazier and crazier. I think there are
a couple of reasons for this. Allow me to share.
The first reason the world is crazy is the pursuit of truth. I can’t help but think of the passage from the
Gospel of John 18:2840, “The Trial before Pilate”. Pilate raises the ageold question, “What is truth?” To
be honest, Truth stood before him. He was too blind to recognize it. For us today, truth is what “I” the “I”
that you see in the mirror choose to believe. Whatever our trusted source of truth might be, the message is
actually relative. If this source agrees with “me”, then it’s truth; if it doesn’t, it’s obviously wrong. Just like
Pilate, our world stands before THE Truth which has not changed in two millennia and won’t change after
us. As the Letter to the Hebrews says: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (13:8).
Let’s stay focused on Him as He IS Truth, in turbulent times and not.
The second reason for our crazy world is related to the first. I think of the old word “acedia”. The Cate-
chism of the Catholic Church defines it as “a form of depression due to lax ascetical practice, decreasing
vigilance, carelessness of heart” (#2773). Acedia is first introduced in relationship to sloth. So, what might
be missing from our ascetical practices? Well, first, we must make time for prayer. Prayer isn’t really about
“my” convenience; it’s about God’s. God is always present to us, IF we are truly open to that presence.
Prayer is the response to God’s invitation to praise Him for all that He gives to us. If “I” have the attitude
that God is at “my” bidding, where and when “I” decide it should be, then there is something wrong with
“my” prayer. Second, let’s look at our prayer. Is it about “me” and what “I” want/need? Perhaps the hard-
est prayer is the one that caused Jesus to sweat blood, “Not my will, but yours be done” (Mark 14:36 and
Luke 22:42). Where is our prayer focused? What carelessness has entered into our spiritual lives?
I say all this as I look just not at the big world, only a small part of it Saint Matthew Parish. When peo-
ple ask me how it’s going, I teasingly say for me, yes, my title has changed; however, the headaches are the
same! To be honest, many of my struggles as Pastor revolve around truth and acedia. I wish to lead you to
THE Truth as best as I can without acedia distracting us as we journey toward Him.
See you at the Eucharistic Table!

Confirmation 2021
Confirmation
will be taking place
in the Fall of 2021.
Though part due to
the coronavirus pandemic, the pastoral staff has decided
that we will be celebrating the Sacrament during the Fall
season moving forward. This means that our students
will be Confirmed in the Fall of their 9th grade year,
rather than the Spring of their 8th grade year. Please
know that this decision was not made lightly; much
prayer and thought have gone into it. If you would like to
know more, please email or call Jonah Soucy at
[email protected], 4129233415.
If your son or daughter is in 8th Grade, it is not too

late to get them caught up so that they can be Confirmed
with the next class, which will take place sometime in the
Fall semester of 2021. Our virtual Confirmation
Preparation classes will begin on Sunday, January 17th
and continue each Sunday from 7 8:30pm. If your child
would like to be signed up or you have any questions,
please contact Jonah. If your child has not been attending
classes for a while, there will be a little bit of catch up to
do. We are here to help with the process! God bless!

Port Authority Notice!
We have been notified by the Allegheny County Port
Authority that due to a County Public Works
construction project, the 4Troy Hill route will be
detoured and 37 stops will be temporarily discontinued
from December 28 through March 2021. This
temporarily discontinues the stop at Mt. Troy Road and
Geyer Road. Those who use the bus to access St.
Aloysius will need an alternate means of transportation.

St. Vincent de Paul Donation Boxes
While a fourth bin has been added, people still seem
to be piling things around the boxes rather than IN the
boxes. Be reminded that donations at the boxes are
ONLY for clothes and shoes to be placed INSIDE the
bins. NO OTHER donations are acceptable at the boxes,
such as partially used paint cans, children’s car seats,
furniture, and the like. Please help to keep the area
around the boxes presentable for the sake of the
neighborhood. Your cooperation would be greatly
appreciated.
