Lovelier than ever: the historic Atrium Hotel Blume in Baden and its

newly renovated art nouveau atrium with its babbling fountain is a fascinating

600 years young

Preserving the aesthetics of the past is one of the characteristics of the Swiss Historic Hotels, of which the romantic Atrium Hotel Blume in Baden is one. The stately building in the thermal spa district is already geared up for the forthcoming 600-year anniversary. Hosts Silvio and Patrik Erne have planned an anecdote-based tour of the hotel and have elegantly rejuvenated the picturesque atrium with its galleries, babbling fountain and the art nouveau balustrades. By the way, there are two Christmas cacti that have been growing there for almost 100 years.

The Roman bath with its large tubs for two people also exudes a touch of grandeur. The ladies’ salon with its murals, the lovingly restored furniture, the impressive dining room, the cosy box spring beds and the comfortable bathrooms prove that past and present can make a wonder-ful dream pairing.

You grew up in your hotel. What was that like? The regular guests were like part of our family, so I had something like 20 aunts and uncles. My brother and I would show our guests the romantic thermal spa district.

Which part is par-ticularly nostalgic?Our good old Schindler lift – one of the first in the world. It may look old, but the working mechanism is state of the art.

Do you have a favourite spot in the building? The chaise longue on the fourth floor. You can see the sky through the glass roof and the atrium below with all its galleries and greenery.


Hotels with a heritageThe Swiss Historic Hotels label is only bestowed on the most beautiful historic hotels in Switzerland – from grand hotels and noble palazzos through to simple hostels and rustic chalets. All buildings must be of architectural significance and feature original furnishings and lighting to create a genuine historical Switzerland experience.

The historic hotels can look back on years of history. Most of them have existed for more than 100 years, like this luxury hotel on Lake Lugano. The Splendide Royal opened in 1887 and is now sparkling even more brightly than ever.

This carefully renovated hotel within the walls of an austere former Cluniac monastery, is an oasis of tranquillity and can only be reached on foot, by bicycle or by boat.

The inn in the historic city centre of Porrentruy was completely renovated in 2016 with careful atten-tion to detail. It also has a restaurant which fully ascribes to the philosophy of “terroir”, or regional- based cooking.

Seven houses in the historic city centre form the Wilden Mann, a place of hospitality dating back hundreds of years, and right in the cen-tre of the city. Every one of its 48 rooms is individually designed down to the last detail.
