THE PACESETTER: With 6,000 employees in Los Angeles County, Amgen Inc. is the largest local biotech/biomed employer. The Thousand Oaks company has 18,000 employees worldwide and reported $17.3 billion in revenue last year, an increase from $15.6 billion in 2011. The company spent approximately $3.4 billion on research and development last year. Amgen had two products each exceed $4 billion in revenue last year. Its best-selling drugs, Neulasta and Neupogen, are used to reduce infections in patients on chemotherapy generated $5.3 billion.

SANTA MONICA: Agensys Inc., an affiliate of Tokyo-based Astellas Phama Inc., opened a new, 160,000 square-foot research and development facility in Santa Monica in January.
