Grand Knight’s Message: I hope you all enjoyed a merry and blessed Christmas with your family and loved

ones. I encourage you to continue to make time this Christmas season to pray to the child Jesus and the Holy Family. Ask them to intercede for whatever it is you and your family need at this moment. Take a few minutes to enjoy His peace and reflect on what is good in our lives. Maybe you didn’t get all the gifts that you wanted, but if you think about it, you most likely received everything you truly needed. I’ll share a personal story. Two days before Christmas, I was heading home from a party at a friend’s house. While stopped at a red light, a homeless man approached me. It was very cold that night and he was wearing only a light jacket. He also had a black eye. He asked if I could help. Through my closed window, I shook my head and said “Sorry, I don’t have anything.” He nodded but persisted, “Do you have anything? Food? Water? A sweatshirt?” I remembered then that I did have a spare hooded sweatshirt in my car. It’s far a winter coat, but was certainly better than what he was wearing. I gave it to him and he thanked me and said “God Bless You.” He explained he had been jumped and what little he had was stolen. He told me that I saved his life that night by giving him the hoodie. Can you grasp that? A hoodie saved his life. God provided him what he needed. He does the same for us. Are we paying attention? Reflect on that as you celebrate the new year. I pray you all have health, joy, and prosperity in 2018. Please be safe and responsible in your New Years’ celebrations.

And, as you can see from our schedule, we are again very busy this month. Please make time to help us and join us with our many events.

Council Report:

ANNUAL SURVEY OF FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES: Did you know that Knights donated more than $175 million and more than 73 million volunteer service hours in 2016? Those statistics are staggering and demonstrate the impact Knights of Columbus have throughout the world. But how do we get these numbers? Simple. You tell us what you do! Sure, Councils can tally up their charitable donations and estimate the number of volunteer hours from each program. But we know you do more than just council activities. Are you a Lector? An extraordinary minister? Are you part of Social Outreach? Maybe you volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul? Did you drive a cancer patient to chemotherapy? Volunteer with Special Olympics? The list goes on and on. Please contact Stu Altschuler at 856-235-7076 or [email protected]. Let him know what you do and estimate the number of hours you volunteer. He will add it to our survey and submit it to Supreme. Please submit your information by Wednesday, January 24th. COUNCIL CHRISTMAS PARTY: Thanks to all who attended the parish Christmas party at The Merion. Nearly 300 parishioners were in attendance. The Knights, and all ministries, were well represented. It was a wonderful evening that brought the parish together. There are many different ministry groups at OLGC. We all have our own events. We all assist the parish in different ways. But together, we are the family of Our Lady of Good Counsel. I look forward to future parish events.

BASKETBALL SEASON HAS BEGUN! Council 1082 joined the Burlington County Chapter Basketball league two years ago. In our first year, we made it all the way to the championship finals. Last year, we had a rough regular season but still made a strong showing during the end of the season tournament. This year, Brother Joe Maguire has taken over as coach and is confident he can lead us to that championship trophy. Here is the current game schedule: 12/30/2017 12:45 Lenape South 1/13/2018 4:30 St Joan of Arc 1/20/2018 1:30 Lenape South 1/27/2018 2:15 Lenape South 2/3/2018 12:45 Lenape South 2/10/2018 3:45 St Joan of Arc 2/17/2018 12:00 St Charles Borromeo 2/24/2018 12:45 St Charles Borromeo How can you join? It’s simple. Make sure you have a current membership card and a black t -shirt. Then contact Joe Maguire at 856-577-0385 or [email protected].

SECOND DEGREE: Our Lady Queen of Peace Council in Hainesport is hosting a Second (Formation) Degree on Monday, January 8th. Candidates must arrive by 7:30pm and dress code is jacket and tie. The principle of the Second Degree is Unity. All First Degree Knights are encouraged to proceed through all the degrees. Any First Degree member who is able to attend should contact Membership Director Joe Badowski at 609-332-7241 or [email protected]. You may also contact Grand Knight George Tower at 609-304-2743 or [email protected]. We will register you for the degree and arrange an escort for you. And, any member who has attained at least the Second Degree can attend the ceremony as an observer. It is a different experience observing the degree as opposed to taking the degree. Attend as an observer to reinforce the lesson and perhaps learn something new!

MEMBERSHIP INCENTIVE – WIN A TRIP TO THE WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES: Supreme Council has just announced a new incentive for recruiting members into our Order. From December 1st, 2017 – June 30th, 2018 all members who recruit new members are automatically entered into a drawing to win a trip for two to the World Meeting of Families in Dublin, Ireland – all expenses paid! Is your son, grandson, or nephew 18 and a practical Catholic? How about your neighbor, your best friend, a colleague at work? Have you asked them to join? Although we do the annual membership drive in the fall, the best method of recruiting new members is one on one. Be sure you always have a Form-100 handy. List your information as the proposer. Every time a new recruit of yours completes the First Degree, Supreme will enter your name into the drawing. 10 winners will be drawn in July of 2018. The World Meeting of Families is August 21-26, 2018. For more information or if you need help recruiting, contact Membership Director Joe Badowski at 609-332-7241 or [email protected].

BROTHER KNIGHTS NEEDS ASSISTANCE: Many of you know our brother, Warren Thompson. Warren is undergoing treatment for cancer and needs transportation to and from his home in Delanco to appointments at MD Anderson at Cooper in Camden. Several Knights have been helping Warren these past several months and we are grateful for your assistance. Currently there is one date he needs a ride. Tuesday, January 30th. The appointment is at 2:30pm and he asks to be picked up 45 minutes before the appointment time. Please do not assume someone else is doing it. If you can spare the time - or make the time - please contact George Tower at 609-304-2743 or [email protected] so he can put you in touch with Warren. Church Report:

ADULT ALTAR SERVERS FOR FUNERAL MASSES: One of the many ways we serve OLGC is by providing altar servers for funeral Masses. This started several years ago when Father Damian enlisted the aid of the K of C to assist at the Rite of Christian Burial. Initially Bob Middleton and George Wood undertook the job of preparing for the Mass, serving at the liturgy and doing the necessary clean up after mass. Presently there are nine men who participate in this ministry. However, we have had approximately 50 funerals at OLGC in the past year. Therefore, there is an urgent need to enlist the participation of additional men who can be available for two hours once or twice a month to assist our priests in carrying out this corporal work of mercy. You are asked to call Jim Walton at 856 234 2974 if you are interested or have any questions. No previous experience is required. CHRISTMAS GIFTS TO CLERGY AND PARISH: We are happy to once again have been able to present Christmas gifts from the Council to our parish and our priests. Father Damian and Father Jack received $50 each for their personal use. Our trust fund trustees also approved a $1,000 gift to the parish itself. These are gifts of appreciation for the support we receive from the parish and the constant use of campus space for our meetings and events. CEMETERY MAINTENANCE AND CHRISTMAS DECORATION REMOVAL: Thanks to all who assisted with this year’s Christmas decorations. Many Knights participated as did several students who earned service hours. We finished decorating the campus in record time. But, now that Christmas has passed, we need to remove the decorations. On January 6, 2018 at 8:30 AM volunteers are needed to clear Christmas decorations from the graves at the parish Cemetery, Mt Carmel Cemetery, 800 E Camden Ave, Moorestown. At that time, we will also load the decorations onto a disposal truck. It should take about 90 minutes to complete this project. At the conclusion of the Cemetery project we will move to the parish campus and remove the porch and pole Christmas decorations. This project can be completed in about 30 minutes. These projects are also excellent activities for young adults who need service hours or any young adult who can contribute their time to a worthy cause. All are welcome. Respond to Thom Scattaregia at 856-235-5240 or [email protected] if you can participate.

HOLY HOUR AND ROSARY FOR LIFE WITH THE ICON OF THE HOLY FAMILY: On Thursday, January 18th, 2018, Council 1082 is participating in the Burlington County Chapter Holy Hour at St. Joan of Arc, 100 Willow Bend Rd, in Marlton. Our brothers from Father John P. Wessel, Council 6530, have arranged to have the Icon of the Holy Family present for this event. Knights from other area councils will also be attending. Start time is 6:00pm for the Rosary and prayers, followed by Mass at 7:00pm. More information will be published as it becomes available. It’s important to note that January 18th is the night before the March for Life in Washington, DC. Carpools can be arranged if there is a demand. Contact Dick Bakley at 856-235-7972 or [email protected]. Community Report:

2017 LUNCHEON WITH SANTA: We enjoyed a very successful Lunch with Santa this year. All the cafeteria tables were full at one point with families enjoying the food and desserts and the children waiting to visit Santa. Our members were out in full force assisting with everything from setup and preparation to serving and cleanup. We even had brothers walking the parade advertising the luncheon. The Council thanks all who participated. A special thanks goes to brother Greg Klint who has been coordinating this event for the past few years. Greg’s leadership has ensured the continued success of this annual event. Special thanks also to brother Sir Knight Joe “Santa Claus” Graham. Joe has been our Council Santa for many years. The children look forward to seeing him and he brings the spirit of Christmas to them. Both Greg and Joe were interviewed for an article run in the Moorestown Sun. That article is included with this newsletter. SEND A HERO HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: Four years ago, the NJ State Council started the Send a Hero Home for the Holidays campaign. This program allows military men and women stationed here in New Jersey to spend the holidays with their families. Council 1082 joined the effort this year and contributed $922 to the program. Our efforts, combined with other Councils throughout the state allowed 91 members from all branches of the military to go home this year. Thank you for supporting our military heroes! LANCERS FOR LIFE: Thank you for answering our appeal for Holy Cross Academy Lancers for Life. Donations were requested so that Father Chris Colavito, chaplain at Holy Cross, could bring 40 students to Washington, DC for the March for Life. Council 1082 donated $100 and our members added an additional $600 in donations. This, combined with donations from other Councils, have all but guaranteed the trip for the students. Thank you, again, for your generosity. You are helping to nurture the pro-life values of these students.

NEW EYES FOR THE NEEDY / USED STAMPS FOR VETERANS: We are always collecting eyeglasses for the needy and used postage stamps for our veterans. Donations may be placed in the Knights of Columbus plastic bin located in the Sacred Heart room at the rear of the main Church. Thank you to Past Grand Knight Angelo Sanelli for his leadership and dedication to these programs. Youth Activities Report:

BASKETBALL FREE THROW COMPETITION: Our annual basketball free throw competition is scheduled for Saturday, January 20th at 9:00am in the OLGC School Gym. The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is open to all boys and girls in your community, ages 9 to 14. Age eligibility is determined by the age of the contestant as of January 1. Proof of age is required. The championship is set up to have the contestants compete within their own gender and age group. All competition starts at the local level. Winners move on to the district, regional, and state or provincial levels. From there, some make it to the international level for championship competition in their group. Players from Council 1082 have advanced to regional and state levels in the past. Knights are needed to help register players and verify scoring as well as spread word about the event. If you assist any local school with sporting activities, please let the students know about this competition. If you can help the day of the contest, contact Joe Maguire at 856-577-0385 or [email protected]. Culture of Life Report:

KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS: Thanks to all members who assisted with our annual Keep Christ in Christmas lawn sign and car magnet sales. Most Masses were well covered and it was nice to see participation from members we haven’t seen in a while. Proceeds from these sales benefit both Options for Women and 1st Way of Burlington County. Another part of Keep Christ in Christmas is a presentation to the religious educations students on the meaning of Christmas. Brother Knights Dr. John Sherry, Thom Scattaregia, Joe Graham, and Jim Cassidy did the presentation this year. Dr. Linda Dix sent an incredible thank you letter that is included with this newsletter. RIGHT TO LIFE RALLIES: The annual March for Life in Washington, DC takes place on Friday, January 19th. While the council is not running a trip ourselves, other area parishes have sponsored buses in the past. If you would like to go to DC, please contact the parish office at 856-235-0181 to obtain information. It is the 45th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision. Let President Trump and the current legislators hear your voice. Even if you’re unable to go to DC, you can sign the online petition to overturn Roe v. Wade by visiting this website: https://lifepetitions.com/petition/roe-v-wade .

Also, the annual New Jersey Right to Life rally is scheduled for Monday, January 22nd at 11:00am. The rally takes place at the State House in Trenton. Knights and pro-lifers from throughout New Jersey will be in attendance. Please see the flyer included with the newsletter for more information. If you are unable to attend either rally, remember to pray for an end to abortion. Prayer is our most powerful weapon! OPTIONS FOR WOMEN BABY BOTTLE DRIVE: Knights are needed to hand out baby bottles and envelopes for the annual Options for Women fundraising campaign. The drive is scheduled after all Masses the weekend of January 20th and 21st. Unlike other events, we don’t need tables or clipboards. In fact, we don’t even have to be outside! We simply stand at each entrance and hand out empty baby bottles and envelopes as parishioners leave Mass. Can you arrive 15 minutes early and/or stay 10 minutes after Mass? I know you can and I thank you for your participation. Please contact Bill Thomas at 856-979-2923 or [email protected] and let him know your availability. HOAGIES FOR HELPERS: We are starting a new fundraiser this year to benefit Helpers of God’s Precious Infants, NJ. Helpers aims to build a culture of life and family by providing financial support, counseling, clothing, transportation and other needs to pregnant women and their families. Put simply, if there is a need, Helpers fills that need. The fundraiser is a hoagie sale. Moorestown Deli and Catering has agreed to assist us with this effort. Knights are needed after all Masses the weekend of January 27th and 28th to take orders and payment. Orders and payment will be turned over to Moorestown Deli and customers will pick up their orders from the deli on Super Bowl Sunday, February 4th. Please come early and/or stay late to assist us with this most worthy cause. Contact George Tower at 609-304-2743 or [email protected] and let him know what Mass(es) you will assist with. We also need a chairperson for this event. George has prior commitments the 27th and 28th. He is arranging everything with Moorestown Deli, but needs one or two Knights to collect the orders and money and bring them to the deli after the noon Mass on January 28th.

Religious and Civil Liberties Report:

SUPPORT FOR PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS: Surpeme Knight Carl Anderson is asking all Knights to join Supreme’s efforts to support our persecuted Chrisitian brothers and sisters. Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori has composed this prayer:

Prayer for Persecuted Christians

O God of all the nations, the One God who is and was and always will be, in your providence you willed that your Church

be united to the suffering of your Son. Look with mercy on your servants

who are persecuted for their faith in you. Grant them perseverance and courage

to be worthy imitators of Christ. Bring your wisdom upon leaders of nations

to work for peace among all peoples. May your Spirit open conversion

for those who contradict your will, that we may live in harmony.

Give us the grace to be united in truth and freedom, and to always seek your will in our lives.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Lady, Queen of Peace, pray for us! To learn more about the Order’s efforts to aid persecuted Christians and those in their care, or to make a donation, visit www.ChristiansAtRisk.org

December 12, 2017

Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Dear Knights of Columbus,

Pope Francis has written, “Daily life allows us to touch, with our

hands, the urgent needs experienced by people. We are asked for a

particular kind of attention that leads us to notice the need in which so

many of our brothers and sisters find themselves. People who pass by,

who move on in life without noticing the needs of others, without

seeing the many spiritual and material needs of others, are people who

pass by without living.” Certainly, Pope Francis would be so very

proud of the four men who presented “Keeping Christ in Christmas” to

our seventh graders on Tuesday evening, December 5. Christmas

customs, the nature of the Knights of Columbus and the importance of

the true meaning of Christmas was portrayed with a conviction of faith

that our seventh graders thoroughly responded to with engagement,

interest, and involvement. Thank you to Dr. John Sherry, James

Cassidy, Joseph Graham, and Thomas Scattaregia for their profound

witness of Catholicism and the reason for the season to our confirmands.

Both teachers and confirmands were very moved. This is the fifth

anniversary of their presentation and truly it could not have been a finer

one. I am most grateful for their presence in our program and the time

that they rendered to our seventh graders amidst this cold and bleak

December. Certainly, they brought the light of Christ and the warmth

of a lived, practiced, active faith into the lives of our children. Thank

you so very much for all you are and do! Our Christmas season has

been enriched thanks to the goodness of these men. May God grant you

a blessed Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year!

Gratefully,

Dr. Linda M. Dix, DRE
