CANADA CHILD BENEFIT
The new CCB provides parents with more tax-
free money to help with the high cost of
raising their kids. In fact, 3 million families will
receive more money than ever before.
Families who need it most will start receiving
the new Canada Child Benefit (CCB) starting
this summer. 9 out of 10 families will benefit.
The old child care benefit provided cheques
to millionaires. We have ended that unfair
giveaway.
What will the new CCB mean for your
family? Calculate your benefit at:

“
The new Canada Child Benefit is a solid win over existing
programs in both dollar terms and ease of use. The money is
tax-free, so it won’t have to be accounted for when completing
your income tax return every year.”
– Rob Carrick, Globe and Mail
“
This is a historic step forward in the battle against child poverty
in Canada that is long overdue and long called-for by
Campaign 2000 and other groups,”
– Anita Khanna, national co-ordinator of Campaign 2000
Minister Hehr, at the Lilac Festival, speaking with a constituent. (June 5th
, 2016)
What is the Canada Child Benefit?
The new Canada Child Benefit is a federal tax benefit that is simpler, tax-free, more generous and better targeted than the existing system. The Canada Child Benefit is a real investment to build a stronger middle class, and in our shared future.
Who receives this benefit?
The Canada Child Benefit will be given to Canadian families who need it most. This includes the middle class and those working hard to join it. The benefit is an investment in your family for you and your children to reach their fullest potential.
What does tax-free mean?
It means that your family will receive a single payment every month and you won’t have to pay back the amounts received when you file your tax returns each year. That’s right – it’s all yours!
How is it simpler?
Families, just like yours, will receive a single payment every month for the high costs of raising their kids.
How is this benefit better targeted?
The Canada Child Benefit will be given to those who need it most. This means, under our new system, low- and middle-income families will receive more benefits, and those with the highest incomes (generally over $150,000) will receive lower benefits.
What makes this benefit more generous?
Canadian families will see an average increase in child benefits of almost $2,300 in the 2016-17 benefit year.
What age do my children have to be for my family to receive this benefit?
The Canada Child Benefit will provide a maximum annual benefit of up to $6,400 per child under the age of 6 and up to $5,400 per
child aged 6 through 17.
How does the amount my family receives from the Canada Child Benefit change?
Benefits are paid over a 12-month period from July of one year to June of the next year. Your benefit payments will be recalculated every July based on information from your income tax and benefit return from the previous year.
How does the Canada Child Benefit work?
The Canada Child Benefit will be paid monthly to eligible families, beginning in July 2016, replacing the Canada Child Tax Benefit and the Universal Child Care Benefit.
About 300,000 fewer children will be living in poverty in 2016-17 compared with 2014-15.
How will the Canada Child Benefit help families like mine?
Under the current system, nine out of ten families will receive more money in child benefits for groceries, school supplies and child care to help all kids build their brightest future.
Will you need to apply?
If you already get the UCCB or the CCTB, or both, you will not have to apply for the CCB.
However, you and your spouse or common-law partner must file a 2015 income tax and benefit return, even if you did not have income in that tax year.
The CRA will use your adjusted family net income from your return to calculate your payment. The payment you receive for the July 2016 to June 2017 period will be based on your adjusted family net income for 2015.
How do I apply?
If you do not currently get the UCCB or the CCTB and you have a child under 18, you can apply for child benefits by using one of the following options:
The Automated Benefits Application for newborns: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/bnfts/tmtd-eng.html
The online service “Apply for Child Benefits” on My Account: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/esrvc-srvce/tx/ndvdls/myccnt/menu-eng.html

For more information on the application process visit: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/bnfts/ccb/menu-eng.html
How will the Canada Child Benefit support my family?
The Canada Child Benefit will provide a maximum annual benefit of up to $6,400 per child.

Too many middle-class families in Calgary
Centre are struggling to get ahead. We’re
working to build an economy that works
for the middle class, because we know
that when middle class Canadians have
money to save, invest, and grow the
economy, all Canadians benefit.
Here’s how the CCB is making a difference for families:
*This proposed measure is subject to parliamentary approval
That is a fact.
Simpler
Tax-free
Better-targeted
More generous
(Continued from page 1) Today, too many middle class families struggle to get ahead. It is harder and harder for families to save money for the high cost of raising their children as the cost of living keeps rising.
For 30 years, we have seen the gap between rich and poor widen and the middle class shrink. To address this, we have introduced a middle-class tax cut, and raised taxes on the wealthiest one percent. The new Canada Child Benefit - which will put $930M into the pockets of Albertan families - will lift hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty. When Canadians have more money to save, invest and grow the economy, everyone benefits.
Liberals, in our first year as Government, announced the implementation of the Canada Child Benefit, a simpler, tax-free, more generous and better targeted federal tax benefit. This will help Canadian families to save, invest and grow their economy.
We are delivering on our promise to replace the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) and the Canada Child Tax Benefits (CCTB) with the Canada Child Benefit (CCB).
Implemented in the first budget tabled on March, 2016, the new benefit could be available as soon as July – subject to parliamentary approval. Eligible Canadian families who have a child under 18 will receive their first Canada Child Benefit cheque, and this single monthly benefit will be recalculated every July based on information from families’ income tax and benefit return from the previous year.
It is tax-free and Canadian families will not have to pay back the amounts received when they file their tax returns each year.
The Canada Child Benefit will provide a maximum annual benefit of up to $6,400 per child under the age of 6 and up to $5,400 per child aged 6 through 17.
We are proud that we are now giving back to Canadian families, ensuring their children can reach their fullest potential while we continue to build an economy that works for the middle class.
Parenting is one of the most important jobs; the CCB will give 9 out of 10 Canadian families more money in their pockets to help with the high costs of raising their kids.
Additionally, there will be 300,000 fewer children living in poverty in 2016-17 compared to 2014-15.
With the CCB, Liberals kept the promise to increase benefits for the middle class and ensure all Canadian children can build a bright future.
Liberals believe that a strong economy starts with a strong middle class. When you have an economy that works for the middle class, you have a country that works for everyone.
We believe that when the middle class thrives, it creates more than just good jobs and opportunity; it can drive real change.
Our new approach puts people first, and it invests in growing the middle class. It also reflects a belief that is the spirit of Alberta’s rich history of innovation and collaboration. By investing today in our future we know Alberta and Canada’s best days are ahead.
