Everything You Need to Build a Pretty, Professional, Profitable Website in a Weekend!

If you’re ready to turn your expensive hobby into a profitable business, you know that means having a professional website to share your expertise, grow your community, and gain paid clients.

But over and over again, I hear from frustrated entrepreneurs who feel completely stuck creating their first website. There are just so many questions and options when it comes to launching your website, like...

:: What all do I need before I even start building my website?

:: Should I use WordPress or another platform?

:: I don’t have thousands of dollars to hire a designer… is it possible to DIY and look professional?

:: What if I want more control over the look and layout of my website… will I have to get a high-end developer to customize everything?

:: How do I create my brand elements {like your logo, your fonts, and your color palattes} without knowing a thing about graphic design?

If any of those questions have held you back from launching your own website, this practical guide is designed to help give you the basics and our list of go-to recommended tools for creating a pretty, professional and profitable website for $200 or less.

And yes, that’s $200! It’s not a typo. With the right tools, a weekend, and a little legwork, you can make it happen without any technical expertise or design savvy. I’m here to walk you through the process, one click at a time!

First things first, your website is going to need an address on the internet - aka a domain name. Take your time making a list of ideas and checking to see which domain names are available!

Most personal brands and lifestyle entrepreneurs find that the easiest, most flexible domain name is their own name - with a .com at the end of it. Why? Because many times, your business will grow and evolve within a the first couple years. Using your own name is the easiest way to bring your community along for the journey.

You can also choose a ‘branded’ domain name. Make sure you search to make sure your desired name is available - especially as attempting to use a branded name that already exists might infringe on someone’s trademark!

What if your desired domain name isn’t available? You can try for alternative extensions like .co or .me {I generally don’t recommend this especially if you’re a local entrepreneur - people always default to .com when they search for you}.

For domain names we recommend NameCheap.com or LiquidWeb.com. Cost? $10 - $15 per year {some hosting includes first year free}.

STEP TWOSetting Up Your Hosting

You’ve got an address, now you need somewhere to build. Hosting is essentially the “land” you are renting to build your website on.

It’s important to note that not all hosting is created equal! There are very inexpensive hosts that can be perfect when you’re first getting started and looking to bootstrap your biz… but remember this is your online landlord.

Imagine what you would be looking for in a physical location. You’d be looking for a safe neighborhood with full-time security, worry-free maintenance, and reliability, right?

Plus, you’d probably not even step foot in the sketchy side of town, where the windows are barred and break-ins are common. No one wants to run a biz when you’re worried about being robbed!

Just like with renting a commercial space for your business, there is a premium on the quality for your hosting. Your landlord {aka your hosting provider} can help your business run so much smoother when they take on the burden of security, maintenance, and server uptime {because when your site gets hacked or attacked… those cheap hosting providers aren’t there to help you out - you’re responsible for hiring security and cleanup}!

That’s why we hands down recommend WPEngine. Their hosting packages include automatic backups and recovery, 24/7 support {staffed by WordPress experts}, and built-in security. If you go with WPEngine, you’ll want to purchase a domain name via NameCheap.

Cost? Starting at $29 a month

Our bootstrapper recommendation? Liquid Web. It’s super inexpensive but remember - the lower the cost, the more you’re responsible for the maintenance, support, and security for your website. They have great support so get them on the phone (or chat) and they’ll help you get started. Cost? Starting at $15.95 - $24.95 {paid annually for $191.40 - $299.40}

Now that your site has somewhere to live, it’s time to set up WordPress! If your hosting is the land where you’re building your website, WordPress is the building. It’s the framework that your site is built on top of.

There are two versions of WordPress - Free WordPress.org or Self-Hosted WordPress.com.What is the difference between the two? It all comes down to control.

WORDPRESS.COM

WORDPRESS.ORG WORDPRESS.COM

Unlimited ThemesAs WordPress is an open-source platform, there are hundreds of thousands of themes {aka designs} that you can use on your website.

Cost? Domain + HostingThe WordPress software is 100% free but you will have to cover your domain + hosting costs.

Monetization Freedom!This is the MOST important part about using a self-hosted WordPress site - you can make money off your website and keep 100% of what you earn!

No Plugins AllowedWhile there are some plugin-like capabilities, you can’t upload any plugins

No MaintenanceYou don’t have to worry about a thing - it’s handled.

Cost? FreeYour WordPress site is free - but will be on a sub-domain {yourname.wordpress.com} unless you pay to upgrade.

When you’ve installed Wordpress, you’re going to notice it doesn’t have a lot style. In fact, it’s pretty… ugly. That’s where themes come in.

Now just to recap::

DOMAIN = ADDRESS

HOSTING = LANDLORD

WORDPRESS = BUILDING

Your theme is the front-end design of your website. It’s what makes everything look beautiful and uniform throughout your entire site without touching the actual software that runs your website. It’s the curtains and throw pillows… the art and lighting.

There are THOUSANDS of free, paid, and premium themes available… but again, buyer beware! Most free and even inexpensive paid themes are not often well coded, supported, or updated {which means you may be vulnerable to malware, attacks, or incompatibility with plugins}. That’s why I only recommend PREMIUM WordPress themes.

Premium WordPress Themes can be super simple or super customizable. When I’m looking at premium WordPress themes, I’m looking for themes that allow for lots of customization without needing to know any complicated code.

After 4 years of teaching Techy Training to Attract Your Tribe:: Your Sweet Site, I shifted 100% of our training to use the premium theme Divi by Elegant Themes.

While many premium themes are focused on designers + developers who are super comfortable with customizing the underlying CSS code, Divi was created to allow regular peeps like you and me to customize every aspect of our websites, including::

Prior to having all this amazing functionality in a single theme like Divi, I was paying hundreds of dollars to get an out-of-the box theme customized to do exactly what I wanted. Now - it’s all in one easy to use theme!

And even crazier? Divi is only $69 a year {but we recommend upgrading to $89 to access their plug-ins like Monarch for social sharing + Bloom for beautiful email opt-in boxes}

“Are you a non-techy business owner building a business online? I’m so non-techy, trying to communi-cate my technical needs in nearly every aspect of my online business—website, social media, computer graphics, and every part of the back-end management is like trying to speak Greek. Racheal has saved my life! This comes so naturally for her, it’s her native language. She’s shown me step-by-step how to build my online presence and anything techy is broken down into very simple steps that are easy to fol-low.

Racheal defines and explains simple terms and steps that others assume you already know and breaks them down in such a way that not only do I not feel lost, stupid or overwhelmed, but I’m actually feeling hopeful that I can master the steps well enough at a basic level to navigate through my online business and take care of my basic needs independently. One of these days I may actually even be able to en-gage in an intelligent conversation on a techy topic!

Thank you Racheal for sharing your incredible wealth of knowledge, your expertise, and your talents in such an easy format for those of us who are “technically challenged.”

I’ve spoken a lot about her technical talent, but working with Racheal is so much more than that… Rache-al is a savvy, creative, innovative, highly skilled business coach/consultant with a strong sense of instinc-tive knowingness. She always seems to know exactly what it is you need personally to be successful in an easy and authentic way.”

I decided to update my thrown together DIY website this year as well, my biz has taken off and I needed a website that was or polished and professional looking. I started looking around and talking to local web designers in the area and decided that it was way out of my budget, I would have to make do. Until I came across the Yogipreneur/Racheal Cook and her Techy Training.

I have to say the price made me stop and think it out at first, but comparing it to what I had priced out with designers/developers, it was still less expensive. I thought I would do the Techy Training and it would give me a decent web-site for a better price than hiring someone and I would be able to update it at anytime. What I didn’t expect is what I REALLY got from the Techy Training. WHOA!! It was not only the technical skills, taught in plain English step by step, to give me a professional, polished, website, but it was SO MUCH MORE.

The training walks you through marketing and writing phenomenal copy that will also make your website shine and pull in YOUR perfect clients. Techy Training gave me more so much more than what I would have gotten just hiring a web designer. Not only do I have a great looking site, but I also have a ton more biz knowledge and savvy! And as one can always expect when working with Racheal Cook; her customer service and support is out of this world. I can’t stop singing the praises of this (and ALL of Racheal’s trainings), it have empow-ered me as a business owner and has easily saved me thousands of dollars!!

– Nichole Churchill {Radiant Heart Yoga}

I like to THANK Racheal for developing this Techy Training, I learnt so much about myself and why I’m actually wanting to teach yoga and to who, that look at myself and my biz through Racheal Baxter Cook’s workbooks was priceless. And her tutorials on WordPress were top of the line.

And of course I have to really thank Katie Truman who really put together the site for me with the VIP help. Katie was an absolute joy to work with and the easiest person I had ever communicated with, Katie just read my mind and helped out on every issue, which resulted in the successful launch of the site right on time. I’m so glad that Techy Training just came into my life and made possible this website. I will surely recommend it to anyone. Namaste

I signed up for Racheal’s Techy Training because I knew my website needed a major upgrade but I didn’t want to pay ton of money to a website designer.The program was super comprehensive and easy to follow, even for someone with minimal web design knowledge like myself. When I’d hit a snag, Racheal and her team where there every step of the way to support me.

I’m so proud of my new, polished and professional-looking site, and have al-ready seem a spike in my business since it’s launch. Several of my students and clients have also commented on how clean and modern it looks. I would highly recommend this program to anyone looking to invest in themselves. Not only am I extremely satisfied with my results, I feel empowered now having the knowl-edge-base to update and keep my site current. Your website is your virtual busi-ness card and I have complete confidence that this program will help your busi-ness grow and prosper.

TESTIMONIALS

Having followed the Fired Up & Focused Challenge, I knew to expect top-notch mate-rial from Racheal Cook and her team. Signing up for the VIP version of Techy Training was one of the best business decisions I’ve ever made.

We all have a website tragedy story, don’t we? Paying someone thousands of dollars and it either never gets done, or doesn’t match up with your vision? Or the designer disappears? That used to be my story too.

Today, my website story changes. For the first time ever, I have a site that not only looks gorgeous and functions flawlessly, but it is in total alignment with my heart. With Rache-al’s expert guidance, I crafted copy that resonates and reflects me perfectly. That alone was worth the price of admission.

Of course, the awesomeness continued when I handed my content over to Katie from team Techy Training to implement my website. I was a little nervous that something might get lost in translation, but that anxiety was quickly laid to rest when I saw what Katie was putting together for me. She provided me with regular up-dates so that I could see how it was coming along, and she was very accommodating when I wanted to make modifications.

My business now has a home on the internet that actually feels like home - for me, and for my ideal clients. I can’t thank Katie & Rachael and the Techy Training Team enough for this gift. If you’re a heart-centred entrepreneur looking for a way to create an amaz-ing website without all the stress, you have found your answer. Sign up for this program, and it might just be the best business decision you’ve ever made.
