SMS302 Mustangs: White Label, Yellow Label, and Black Label

The SMS 302 White Label is normally aspirated, making 440 horsepower, with S1 performance suspension, exhaust, interior ergonomics, and exterior styling with a MSRP of $35,540 (plus transportation, tax, title, registration).

The SMS 302 Yellow Label, making 545 horsepower, has all of the White Label attributes plus a supercharger and SMS 19" wheel/tire assemblies. The MSRP of this 545 horsepower SMS 302 Yellow Label is $45,540 (plus transportation, tax, title, reg-istration).

Steve Saleen's SMS Supercars continues to offer the ultimate, vehicle manufactured and marketed as Black Label models. These continue to be his ultimate performance / lifestyle vehi-cles consisting of advanced aerodynamic body components, his S4 suspension, SMS leather interior, 575 horsepower, and many other features and options. All of the SMS Supercars receive SMS Serialization and are identified in the Steve Saleen SMS Registry.

White Label SMS 302 Mustang Test Drive Text by: Rudy Beyer

A test drive with Steve Saleen was the best way to get direct information and a consumer impression to review the new White Label SMS 302 Mustang. The car that I drove was #12-03 with black leather seats embroidered with "Steve M. Saleen" and "SMS".

The car has a naturally aspirated 302 cu. in. engine that pro-duces a surprising 450 hp, 6-speed manual stick shift, and an SMS exhaust (manufactured by SMS) with a deep rumble of power.

Starting the car and listening to the powerful sounding idle didn't quite prepare me for the surprising FAST acceleration that sent me back into my seat. Steve said to go ahead and get the car up to 6,000 rpm. I hung back from the traffic and enthusiastically took off several times. I was indeed impressed with the quick response, easy shifting, and manageability. I had a secure feel-ing of total control. What a rocket! Even though I let the traffic get ahead of me, I couldn't quite make 6,000 rpm. I was thwarted by the traffic that I caught up to so fast. I wish that we had time to take the car onto the Interstate Highway and experi-ence the thrill of accelerating to merge and then pass everyone!

When I bought my first Saleen, #95-0078 S351, I was in search of a FAST car. All of the salesmen kept showing me QUICK cars. In my mind there is a clear difference between quick and FAST. My 1995 Saleen S351 was FAST. My 1997 Super-charged S351 elevated my definition of FAST. This new Steve Saleen creation still fits my definition of a FAST car. I'm sure that the Supercharged Yellow Label SMS Mustang, and the full featured, supercharged Black Label SMS Mustang will again elevate my definition of a FAST car. I have a hard time even imagining how fast Steve Saleen's future versions will be.

I can totally understand why Steve is so excited to be able to provide real power and a distinctive look and sound at a very affordable price. The three available versions of the 2012 SMS 302 Mustang - White Label, Yellow Label, and Black Label - offer choices that allow us to enjoy driving a FAST Mustang with a distinctive look, sound, and feeling of controlled power.

Editors Notes

In traveling to numerous events, I have been asked many ques-tions about Steve Saleen and his new company, SMS Super-cars. As most fans already know, the SMS stands for Steve M. Saleen. Many Saleen owners have commented that they would like to see the Saleen name return to its prominence on the front windshield of the new SMS Mustangs. Steve commented that he continues to use his name in promotions, and he has added “Steve M Saleen” to the head rest on the SMS 302 Mustang. (See the photo in the left column.)

Another question has been about Steve’s plans to produce an SMS 351 Mustang and the possibility that Ford wouldn’t allow Steve to produce a Mustang with a bigger engine than the Ford Shelby Cobra. Steve replied that he has produced a 351 in the past, and that he has never been restricted by Ford.

January Sunshine in Florida

Silver Springs Nature Park, Ocala, Florida once again was the location for National Parts Depot’s 17th Annual Silver Springs Ford and Mustang Roundup on January 8&9, 2011. The show was free to the first 1000 cars to preregister and $21 per car for others. This included access to all of the park’s attractions, in-cluding three Glass Bottom Boat cruises, a Jungle Jeep ride, animal shows, and live animal exhibits. 930 cars, including 11 Saleens, were at the show. Unlike the cold 2010 show (32 de-grees all day with a little overnight snow) which Steve Saleen attended, the 2011 show had temperatures in the mid 60’s. Although Sunday was a little cooler, Florida lived up to its repu-tation as the Sunshine State.

As an extra bonus, visitors got to see a preview showing of the Cirque Shanghai Bai Xi, The Show of a Hundred Won-ders, with performers from China. The show combined all the aspects of tradi-tional and modern acrobatic stage perform-ance with awesome displays of strength, balance, and martial arts.

Evert Mårtensson, SOEC forum member from Sweden, visited SMS Supercars facility on February 9, 2011. He stated that he has a friend, Gregg Adler, who lives in Santa Ana, California. Gregg helped Evert and his friend, Thore Nilsson, find Saleens to purchase and send to their homes in Sweden. Evert found sonic blue Saleen convertible S281 #05-1098 and Thor found a 2006 metallic red Saleen convertible S281.

Evert and Thore visited the USA twice. Gregg Adler acted as a great ambassador and picked up Evert and Thore at the LAX airport for their two visits to California. Evert stated that Califor-nia is a “nice place”. On the second visit, Evert and Thor were in California for eight days of sight seeing. Evert contacted Jim Dvorak who made arrangements for Evert and Thore to visit the SMS Supercars facility and meet Steve and Molly Saleen. They were given a tour of the facility and saw the SMS Mustangs and Challengers. Evert said that they saw Steve’s red Saleen and Molly’s Molly-Pop Saleen.

As usual, Steve was delighted to greet the visitors and even shared some stories with Evert and Thore. Steve said that he has Swedish roots and has met the Swedish King. Evert said, “it was a memory to meet the legend, Steve Saleen”.

Open house at Steve Saleen’s SMS Supercars facility, 2735 Wardlow Rd., Corona, California has become the traditional gathering of Saleen Owners and Enthusiasts on the day before the Fabulous Fords Forever show at Knott’s Berry Farm. The 2011 event was on Saturday, April 9. Tours and dinner with the Saleen family are a great opportunity to see what’s new and to reminisce about past events. The photos tell the story.

The big news was the SMS Mustang White Label, a lot of bang for the buck. Of course, you can ante up for the SC version (Yellow Label), or the full blown Black Label, with all the SMS wizardry. See page 3 for more details.

Apparently he tried to rent a high performance Por-sche for the “Ring”, but at the last moment, there was an insur-ance issue, so he had to do the lap with an “ordinary” rental car. He did say, regardless of what you drive, it is an amazing ex-perience. (See information about the Nürburgring in the article below.)

All-Ford Nationals Carlisle, Pennsylvania June 3-5, 2011

Friday, June 3 was the beginning of the 17th Annual All-Ford Nationals in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The weather was perfect! Pleasant 80 degree temperatures and a cool breeze welcomed those who were able to make the weekday show. Most regis-trants attended for only the Saturday show. Most of Saturday was dry, but the late afternoon rain chased many visitors away. If they had been patient, they would have saved a drive in the rain. The SOEC tent provided a dry spot for visitors to talk, watch the burn-out contest from a distance, and wait for the rain to stop.

The burn-out contest was held during the rain shower. The grandstands served as a retreat from the rain for the people, and the rain made the road wet which helped several contest-ants blow out their tires and fill the grandstands with a cloud of smoke that brought loud cheers from the pleased crowd.
