Tradition, tradition! Tradition! St. Joseph’s Day, March 19th is, in Italy, also Father’s Day, which isn’t at all surprising as St. Joseph was, of course, the foster father of Jesus. The tradition of the “St. Joseph Table” of food (“la tavala di San Giuseppe”) has its origins in Sicily. Legends from the Middle Ages attributed the end of a devastating drought to a devotion that the Sicilian people made to St. Joseph. This celebration is a symbolic “thank you” and renewal of the Sicilian people’s devotion to St. Joseph.
LAST CHANCE! There will NOT be EXTRA!! This year, our Parish will celebrate St. Joseph Day on March 19 at 8 am, with a St. Joseph Table. In cooperation with “Bake Shop VI”, Pottsville’s Specialty Bread Bakery and Restaurant, we will sell loaves of bread, designed by Baker – Brian Setlock. The loaves of bread will be made in the shape
of a Cross and St. Joseph’s Staff. The cost for a loaf of bread is $8 for the staff (16 oz.) and $10 for the cross (20 oz.). It is a soft Challah bread, and will be blessed on March 19. Deadline and payment for orders is March 9 at 12 Noon from the Parish Office.

WHY DO CATHOLICS DO THAT? Why do Catholics baptize babies? “Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). Baptism is the gateway to life in the Spirit, the Church, and the other Sacraments. So it makes sense that it be conveyed as early as possible. While a child obviously can’t consciously choose Baptism, his/her parents can choose it for them. In so doing, they accept for him/her the priceless gift of becoming a child of God.
