Dear Boulder Road Runners,

Since 1979 and Still Running!

From Brain at Runners Roost, Louisville I wanted to reach out to you to see if you would have any interest in doing a group run from the store here in Louisville. TOO MUCH FUN IN THE MONSOON SEASON by Johnny Chapin, an apprentice member of the Old Lost Rascals

Prologue

Two weeks ago Dave and Layda Hardwick, Tom and Joyce LeMire, and Verne Carlson joined Johnny and Micki Chapin for an early weekend in Leadville (the weekend started on Thursday). Chuck Lowrie was along for the hike up Mt. Massive. As far as anyone knows, sanity prevailed among the women, although, as we’ve heard no news from them, what happened in Leadville may just possibly have stayed in Leadville. Here is Johnny’s report. In summer when the red spots on the Pacific satellite map are rushing north from Mexico to Canada it's time for the Old Rascals to . . . venture into the Colorado Rockies. The purpose of the monsoons is to start forest fires, put them out, and scare the climbers off the peaks long before dark. The Old Rascals went well equipped with the latest in GoLite rain gear and the most insulating not-quite-lightning-proof shoe soles to no avail.

( The Manhattan Bar

As an apprentice member of the Rascals, I normally wouldn't go near such an infamous place, except Verne called me to come rescue him and Tom, after they were caught in a sudden downpour (see above about Monsoons) and I somehow became the default watch-over-Tom-and-Verne designee. I had thought it was Dave’s turn to be in charge. Now I definitely wouldn't go inside voluntarily, but one of the locals grabbed me and invited me for a friendly game of pool in the back room. Verne claimed he was drinking non-alcoholic brew (fat chance they have that at the Manhattan), but he kept the label covered so no one could see. Well, I have to admit it was interesting inside, but none of the photos we took fits in a family newsletter.

Mt Massive We planned a 6:00 A.M. start and actually got away before 7:00. Unfortunately, the monsoon was two hours early and at 13,000 feet hail and lightning forced us to beat a hasty retreat. We did get quite a few tips watching the Leadville 100 trainees on the Colorado Trail.

Mineral Belt Trail A really beautiful 12-mile asphalt trail winds around Leadville and through the mining district. It's great in winter too, because they groom the Mineral Trail and the Colorado Mountain College trails for skate skiing. The trail is dotted with signs that describe the scenery and provide insights into Leadville’s mining history.

So, we "organized" the First Annual Old Lost Rascals Adventure Team bike/run. The biker and runner of a team change places every half mile. The rules are that we make the rules up as we go, including where we're going to end the race. One rule was that you have to stop and read all the interpretive signs, and there were quizzes. Sample: What is the highest point on the Mineral Belt Trail? Answer: 10,600'. Another sample: What is the Lake County Ordnance number for "Dogs must be leashed"? Answer: 2008 #1. Still another sample: Why were the Lake County Commissioners so interested in dogs first thing in 2008? Answer: Councilman Earnest Templehoffer came down with rabies in 2007. However, our rules are very strict, and one team was DQ'd for not having a bike helmet.

Boulder Road Runners My attempts to designate Dave as the watch-Tom-and-Verne responsible person were of no avail. Tom: "Wasn't this trail supposed to be all paved?" The Lost Rascals have a fan club, but they didn't show up until the day after the race.

Moral

Don't let the Old Rascals participate in any of your club events. Why? Well, the Lost Lake Hiking Club (Motto: We think we found it.) quickly became known as the Lost Hiking Club.

Editorial note: *The song “Too Much Fun” is by Daryle Singletary. I’m not sure if the Old Lost Rascals have adopted it as their theme song or not. cgh

Recipe from Chef Anne Bartuszevige

Easy Baked Breakfast Oatmeal: Take one cup of steel cut oats and two cups of apple juice or cider. Pour both into a pie or cake pan. Add dried fruits and nuts to taste. Season with Cinnamon, Ginger, and/or Nutmeg. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes or until all the juice is absorbed (time depends on how gooey you like your oatmeal). Let cool. The next morning, take a big slice, put it on a plate and warm in the microwave for 1 minute. Eat. **I usually make this on a Sunday and eat it for the rest of the week before work. My favorite fruits to add are dried cherries and dried blueberries, fresh fruit is also good. Some alternatives include substituting one cup of cherry juice for one cup of apple juice. Or sub one cup of cream for one cup of apple juice. just keep the basic ratio of 1 dry:2 liquid** My friend, Jessica Whiton, first told me about this and inspired all the variations.
