Supersport: Joe MauerHeight: 6-5 Birthdate: 4-19-83 Weight: 230 Hometown: St. Paul, Minn. In an era when baseball stars frequently change teams, the Minnesota Twins wanted to make sure they kept Joe Mauer on their roster. So they agreed to pay their prize player millions of dollars over the next eight seasons. Mauer is no average Joe. He hits, catches — and catches your eye.

In 2009 he won his third American League batting title in the last four years, with a .365 average, and also belted 28 home runs and was the American League MVP. A fan favorite, Mauer grew up not far from the Twins’ park, in nearby St. Paul. He was an all-around athlete in high school, starring in football and basketball as well as baseball. He signed to play football in college with powerhouse Florida State before accepting an offer from the Twins to play baseball. Besides exciting Twins’ fans with his on-field heroics, Joe contributes to the Minnesota community through baseball’s RBI Program that supports youth.

Standards Spotlight: Have a Great Time Reading!

Mini Page activities meet many state and national educational standards. Each week we identify standards that relate to The Mini Page’s content and offer activities that will help your students reach them. This week’s standard:• Students identify forms and elements of literature. (Language Arts:

Reading)Activities:1. Use newspaper words and pictures to make a Summer Reading poster.2. Choose three books in The Mini Page that you would like to read this

summer. Ask a friend to choose three books. Talk about your choices.3. Find newspaper stories that would make good books about an athlete,

about making something and about another country. Explain your choices.4. Which books discussed in this Mini Page are about (a) real people or

things, (b) animals, and (c) another time period?5. Find four newspaper stories. Take the “who” from one story, and the

“what,” “when” and “where” from each of the other stories. Write a new story that combines your four “W’s.”(standards by Dr. Sherrye D. Garrett, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi)
