Developing Enterprise-scale systems is Really Difficult….

Developing them With Others is Really, Really, Really Difficult… but well worth it!

Lesson One

Page 36: © 2006 Georgetown University Open Source: The Next Wave Charles F. Leonhardt Georgetown University Richard Spencer University of British Columbia 3 rd

The Secret Sauce Recipe…

1. Begin with an Existing System

2. Use Date-Driven Development

3. Board Members Must Face Delivery ‘Back Home’

4. Create a Strong Board and governance

5. Engage in Post-Project Community Development up Front

Lesson Two

Page 37: © 2006 Georgetown University Open Source: The Next Wave Charles F. Leonhardt Georgetown University Richard Spencer University of British Columbia 3 rd

Vett Project Talent Carefully and Make Necessary Decisions

Lesson Three

Page 38: © 2006 Georgetown University Open Source: The Next Wave Charles F. Leonhardt Georgetown University Richard Spencer University of British Columbia 3 rd

Effective Collaboration is a valuable Organizational Capability…

Center of Excellence in Scholarly Information Architecture at Georgetown University

To collaboratively develop a scholarly information architecture through rigorous interoperability testing, and integrating scholarly services with components, enterprise systems and federated environments.

The Center will: Encourage use of OS solutions to enhance applications

(possible applications: LMS, CMS, portal services, e-portfolios, digital library systems, etc.)

Encourage open standards and a reference data model for seamless integration

Provide rigorous context for development and integration Encourage collaboration to avoid ‘vendor centric’

solutions
