THE NEWSLETTERWho Does What?
By.Linda.O’Pry,.Editor
Hello residents! As editor, I want to talk to you about how the newsletter operates and hopefully clear up some misconceptions you might have about ‘who does what’ in the process. The first misconception I would like to clear up is that I ‘do not’ work for nor have I ever worked for SCS Management. Any articles sent to them are then forwarded to me. This article is the first in a series of question and answer articles that I will be writing. A lot of preparation goes into our newsletter, so please take a little time to browse through it. Who knows, you might learn something new or at the very least be entertained.
First of all, I would like to share a little about my background. I have been married to my husband, Bobby, for 26 years, we have two children and a handsome grandson. I am retired and have lived in Willowlake for 11 years. As far as my experience with a newsletter, I took two years of journalism in high school and was editor of the Willowlake newsletter in 2002. I have now been editor since July 2009. I was on the Willowlake Board of Directors for 2-1/2 years in the past, which gives me a different perspective and a greater appreciation towards the board and the committees. I enjoy being the block captain of my street and working closely with the board and committee chairpersons. I wanted to make a difference in our community, so I volunteered. Okay, let’s begin:
1. Q: Who does the newsletter?A: As editor, I do the newsletter every month. The board has entrusted me to make most of the
decisions regarding the newsletter.2. Q: What are the duties of the editor?
A: My duties include writing articles, collecting articles from board members and committee chairpersons and processing all articles. Some of the articles I write are the ‘Mark Your Calendar,’ ‘Kids’ Corner,’ ‘Did You Know’, ‘Food For Thought’ and ‘Tips of the Day’ articles. I do the research and personally select articles to submit for holidays and events pertaining to each given month. I also write some of the poems you see. Plus, I keep the board, committees and important numbers information updated and I take the pictures used in the newsletter. After our publisher has completed the newsletter, they send me a proof which I check for mistakes and then approve. I would like to add that I have a very good working relationship with our publisher.
3. Q: What involvement does SCS have with the newsletter?A: SCS has NO involvement with the newsletter other than submitting an occasional article.
4. Q: Who pays for the newsletters and the postage to mail them?A: The newsletters and postage are free to our residents and are paid for by the advertising
within.
DID YOU KNOW?
Over 34 million Americans are of Irish
descent; That’s almost nine times
the population of Ireland.
The month March was named for the Roman
God “MARS.”

Block Captain And Social Committees
Need Chairpersons The Block Captain Committee is currently looking for a chairperson to actively participate in this worthy cause. Although we now have a short list of block captains and co-captains ready to assist in their duties, they are at present without a leader. Willowlake also needs a Social Committee Chairperson. Please contact any board member if you are interested in chairing either of these committees. You could make a difference in our community!
Kids’ CornerCowboy: Say, why did you buy that dachshund?
City guy: I heard someone say, “Get a long, little doggy!”

PREVENT Car Break-ins
No neighborhood is immune from car break-ins. It happens all over town. Most often, car break-ins occur during the early morning hours when the risk of discovery is low. Persons who commit these types of crimes can be juveniles on a dare, or addicts desperate for something to trade or pawn to support their habits.
TIpS:• Secure your vehicle safely in the garage OR park your vehicle as
close to the residence as possible. If you park on the street, park in an area with good visibility and lighting. Do not leave anything in your vehicle that would tempt somebody to break in. Remove valuables or secure them out of sight in your trunk.
• If your car stereo has a removable face plate, remove it. Do not leave CDs in the car.
• Lock your car doors. Some thieves go from car to car trying doors. Chances are they will simply move on to the next car. Unlocked vehicles provide places for people to sleep, hide or engage in drug activity.
• DO NOT confront the suspect. DO NOT compromise your safety. If you are in a car, flashing your high beams or honking your horn is enough to alert him of your presence. People will likely not commit crime when they know someone is watching.
• Develop a telephone or e-mail “tree” of neighbors or tenants wishing to participate in a Neighborhood Security Crime-Watch Program. Notify each other of criminal and suspicious activity so all can be aware and alert and take precautions.
REpORTINg:713-221-6000: Report car break-ins (after the fact) to HPD. You can make a report over-the-phone by calling the Records Section at 713-221-6000. 9-1-1: To report Crimes-in-Progress. Be prepared to give description of the person(s) and vehicle license plate number.

HEAlTHy SNACkS You Have at Home
There it goes again — that familiar growling in your stomach. Hunger pangs usually hit right around dinnertime, before we may have actually gotten dinner on the table. Munchies can also hit later on at night, after you’ve eaten that healthy grilled chicken salad. What can you nosh on without ruining your healthy diet? Rice cakes? Forget it! Just look around your kitchen and take a peek. There’s plenty there — you just need to know what to do with it.
A DOzEN HEALTHY pANTRY pIcK-mE-UpS:1. Carrots — Cut them into sticks and dip them in salsa, light
salad dressing, yogurt dip or peanut butter. 2. Bananas — On their own, they’re great, but add them to
a smoothie, or freeze them for a fun treat, and they’re even better.
3. Celery —They’re as versatile as carrots and even lower in calories. And they’re crunchy enough to help die-hard chip fans get through the munchies.
4. Cucumbers — Slice them up and sprinkle lightly with salt for a refreshing snack.
5. Dried cereal — Mix this up with nuts and dried fruit for a healthy post-gym treat. Just make sure to keep your serving to 1/2 cup.
6. Nuts — Peanuts, almonds, pecans and other nuts can be tossed with dried cereal and raisins or mixed into a 6-ounce yogurt for a healthy bite.
7. Orange juice/other juices — if you have Popsicle molds or even just ice cube trays, pour in the juice and pop it in the freezer. In just a few hours, you’ll have a cool and tasty refreshment.
8. Peanut butter — Slather on an apple or to add a tablespoon or two to a smoothie for a protein-rich treat.
9. Quesadillas — Use black beans or any other canned beans you have on hand. Add in a sprinkling of cheese, a dollop of salsa and you’re in business.
10.Raisins — sprinkle these high iron and fiber-rich gems into plain yogurt or mix with 1/3 cup of nuts for instant trail mix.
11.Salsa — makes a great dip for veggies and also can be used on sandwiches as a low fat spread instead of mayo.
12.Yogurt — If you have plain yogurt in the fridge, you’re ready to go. Add some fresh herbs (parsley, dill or thyme will all work), along with a dash of salt and pepper, and you’re set.

pERfEcT fOR THE JObMy first job was working in an orange juice factory, but I got
canned…couldn’t concentrate. Then I worked in the woods as a lumberjack, but I just couldn’t hack it, so they gave me the axe.
After that I tried to be a tailor, but I just wasn’t suited for it…mainly because it was a so-so job.
Next, I tried working in a muffler factory, but that was too exhausting. I attempted to be a deli worker, but any way I sliced it, I couldn’t cut the mustard.
My best job was being a musician, but eventually I found I wasn’t noteworthy. I studied a long time to become a doctor, but I didn’t have any patience.
Next, was a job in a shoe factory…I tried, but I just didn’t fit in. I became a professional fisherman, but discovered that I couldn’t live on my net income. I managed to get a good job working for a pool maintenance company, but the work was just too draining.
After many years of trying to find steady work, I finally got a job as a historian until I realized there was no future in it.
My last job was working at a coffee shop, but I had to quit because it was always the same old grind.
SO I RETIRED AND I FOUND I AM…PERFECT FOR THE JOB!

Meet Devion (7/02)Devion is only
little in physical s i z e . H e i s convinced he is the biggest kid around and that he can do anything anyone else can do. This little man lights up any room he enters w i th h i s smi l e and personality. D e v i o n l o v e s attending church and enjoys singing in the children’s choir. Devion loves playing with other people of any age but he plays in the manner of a child age 4 to 6. He is showing progress in being able to play independently. Devion loves to do almost anything outside. He loves to swim, ride bikes & scooters, play baseball, basketball & football and has even recently tried to water ski! Devion has played 4 seasons of t-ball and one season of basketball since living in our home and loves telling everyone about it. While Devion has wonderful gross motor skills he struggles with his fine motor skills. While Devion has made much progress emotionally he continues to receive weekly therapy to work on social skills and impulsivity.
Devion is very loving and affectionate. He enjoys being with others and would do well in a loving, structured, active home of any ethnic make-up as an only or youngest child.
For more information on Devion or on adoption contact Grace Lindgren at the Adoption Coalition of Texas 512-810-0813 or [email protected]
