NAUTILUS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, INC. INSIDE: NAAI Officers’ Reports 2018 Reunion and Aux. Committee Reports OIC Report Eternal Patrol Membership Dues Form Scholarship Report Legacy of the Dolphins Letter from 90° North “Who Are These Guys?” President’s Report By Gary Schmid, NAAI President Hello Shipmates and Friends! WOW! So many exciting things going on within our Association and at our Historic Ship! This has been a busy time for many of our commit- tee chairs and for our active duty shipmates. The effort expended by a few certainly has wrought great things for many. I would like to thank all who have been so very active in making our Association and our Historic Ship greater. Let’s start with the upcom- ing 2018 Reunion honoring the PANOPO Crewmembers 60th Anniversary of the First Transpolar Crossing.A New London reunion location was the preferred site based on the Feb 2017 survey conducted by Denzel Struchen, our Reunion Survey and Search Commit- tee Chairman. Denzel’s survey also gathered preferences for banquet and off-day activities. See his report on page 4. I am so excited that this reunion is coming together so well and so early. The hotel is settled and agenda formulat- ed! Want to know the plan so far? Interested in attending? Read Wanda Sell’s Reunion and Auxiliary-Legacy Com- mittee Report on page 4. The newly formed Auxiliary-Legacy Committee has amazingly been able to involve many of our crewmembers fami- lies in the upcoming reunion and other areas. Remember, it will be our children who will carry this great organiza- tion forward. Please consider encouraging a son or daughter, grandson or granddaughter to involve themselves in NAAI. PLEASE KNOW: TOUR AFT OF 45 NOT GUARANTEED As many of you know from previous experience, our ability to tour aft of frame 45 (reac- tor compartment bulkhead) is dependent on Naval Reactors approval. We may not receive such approval for this 2018 reunion. Also, the Navy and Naval Reactors now require crewmembers requesting approval to tour aft provide a copy of their DD214 prior to access, showing that they served as Nautilus crewmem- bers, NO EXCEPTIONS! Please locate your DD214, given the off chance that we are granted approval to tour aft during the reunion. Of course, tour forward of 45 is not restricted. Nautilus Scholarship Com- mittee, chaired by Pat Ander- son, has the endowment fund well on the way to being fully funded. Read Pat Anderson’s report page 10. Also take a look at the NEAF endowment fund balance on the Treasur- er’s Report. Pat Gerving, Chairman of the Membership Committee and his small team are actively pursuing tracking down miss- ing crewmembers. See Pat’s report on page 8. I just visited the website for the first time and would like to add a crew member. Ralph D. Barnhart, Jr., (deceased) was my first cousin. I have a letter he wrote to our grandmother, transcribed below. I have just purchased the book First Under The North Pole

and am anxious to learn more about Ralph’s experience. —Sharon Dorland
