1. Teach children and youth nonviolence by words and lifestyle.
2. Choose the way of forgiving.
3. Be a person of prayer.
4. Avoid hateful language and negative news.
5. As appropriate, apply humor.
6. Build relationships with those who are different than me.
Recommended book:
Jesus and Nonviolence: A Third Way by Walter Wink.

Lead Teacher, three-year-olds Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30-12:30
Must have 4 year degree and experience with early childhood education.
Lesson plan individually and as a team with the other teachers.
Positive classroom management
Physical stamina to facilitate and participate in preschool activities
Strong communication skills with staff, parents, and the community
Interpersonal skills to develop good relationships with the members of the community as well as being able to understand children's needs.
Willingness to continue education through various teacher trainings and workshops

The Rev. LaTrelle Miller Easterling was elected bishop by the Northeastern Jurisdictional Conference.

With 119 votes, 18 more than she needed, LaTrelle Miller Easterling was elected as bishop by the Northeastern Jurisdiction on July 14.
Easterling, an elder in the New England Conference, most recently served as superintendent of the Metro Boston Hope District, and was named dean of the cabinet in June. Easterling was the second and final bishop election for the Northeastern Jurisdiction.
“I always, always, always stand on the side of justice,” she said, “but I draw the circle wide enough for all of us to be there – and when I say all, I mean all.”
Pastor David Highfield, now in his 49th year of ordained ministry, retired from the United Methodist appointment system in 2007. His last full-time appointment was as lead pastor of Westminster United Methodist Church from 1992-2007. He is a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, Wesley Theological Seminary, and earned the Doctor of Ministry degree from Lancaster Theological Seminary. During retirement Dave is enjoying community service, hobbies, family time, travel, singing, occasional interim ministries, and preaching. He and his wife Conni are parents, grandparents of thirteen, and live in Westminster.

WUMC Guest Parking You are encouraged to invite persons to attend worship and other events at our church as our guests. When doing so you might tell them of these parking spaces, Center Street lot near the steps, reserved just for them. Regular worshipers are encouraged not to use these spaces so guests will find them available.
You are invited to call or email ahead to be certain Sherri will be in the office when you arrive. Feel free to use our door mail slot for drop-offs.

1. Misconcep on: Nonviolence is passive. Not true. Nonviolence is successful problem solving. Success includes the idea that nobody has to use violence. Problem solving is ac ve, not passive.
2. Misconcep on: Nonviolence is cowardly. Not true. Cowards are just cowards; they are not using nonviolence. Nonviolence calls for courage, and many of its most famous examples involved great courage.
3. Misconcep on: Nonviolence is being nice to people. Not true. Nonviolence o en requires uncomfortable confronta on and the deliberate crea on of tension in order to solve a problem that people want to avoid.
4. Misconcep on: Nonviolence is easy. Not true. Nonviolence is o en the path that requires courage, commitment, hard work against long odds, personal embarrassment (for awhile) and struggle.

Misconcep ons About Nonviolence
When angry, count to ten and use the me to remind yourself of your long‐term goals.
Ask “How could I make this situa on worse?” then go in another direc on. (Another version: “Does this situa on really need another jerk?”)
In a crisis, speak calmly, but firmly, and do not shout or swear. Use people’s first names. Use calming body language. Talk about the benefits of a peaceful solu on. Affirm legi mate feelings but do not stoke the fires of revenge.
Replace nega ve self‐talk with descrip on or more posi ve language.
Do not kid yourself in “ac ng out.” (e.g. “I need to vent this anger.” or “I’m going to teach them a lesson.” or “It’s only what she deserves.”) You can always find a more construc ve plan … if not today, then tomorrow.
Prac ce the components of emo onal intelligence: self‐awareness (knowing yourself), self‐regula on (keeping your cool), mo va on (being centered), empathy (standing in the other person’s shoes), and social skills (playing well with others). These are skills that can be improved through learning over a whole life me as long as we value them and do not resist the learning process.
Cul vate an a tude of agape, or basic good will toward others. The idea that there is good in other people, and that they are worth caring about as brothers and sisters, almost always makes you more effec ve in dealing with them; it also helps to mo vate you in the use of other specific skills.
