The 43rd Annual Convention of the ASEEES (Association for Slavic, East European,

and Eurasian Studies) will be held in Washington, DC, on November 17-20, 2011.

Our association’s business meeting is scheduled for Friday, November 18, from 6:30- 7.30

pm. When the conference’s preliminary program is posted, I will email the location of the business

meeting.

In 2011, the HSA will be awarding the Mark Pittaway Article Award. Nominations should be

forwarded directly to the Committee:

To be eligible for this Award, the article must be in English and be published in the last two years.

Deborah Cornelius, Hungary in World War II: Caught in the Cauldron, Fordham U. Press, 2011. The story of Hungary's participation in World War II is part of a much larger narrative-one that has never

before been fully recounted for a non-Hungarian readership. As told by Deborah Cornelius, it is a

fascinating tale of rise and fall, of hopes dashed and dreams in tatters. Using previously untapped sources

and interviews she conducted for this book, Cornelius provides a clear account of Hungary's attempt to

regain the glory of the Hungarian Kingdom by joining forces with Nazi Germany-a decision that today

seems doomed to fail from the start. For scholars and history buff s alike, Hungary in World War II is a

riveting read. Cornelius begins her study with the Treaty of Trianon, which in 1920 spelled out the terms of

defeat for the former kingdom. The new country of Hungary lost more than 70 percent of the kingdom's

territory, saw its population reduced by nearly the same percentage, and was stripped of five of its ten most

populous cities. As Cornelius makes vividly clear, nearly all of the actions of Hungarian leaders during the

succeeding decades can be traced back to this incalculable defeat. In the early years of World War II,

Hungary enjoyed boom times-and the dream of restoring the Hungarian Kingdom began to rise again.

Caught in the middle as the war engulfed Europe, Hungary was drawn into an alliance with Nazi Germany.

When the Germans appeared to give Hungary much of its pre-World War I territory, Hungarians began to

delude themselves into believing they had won their long-sought objective. Instead, the final year of the

world war brought widespread destruction and a genocidal war against Hungarian Jews. Caught between

two warring behemoths, the country became a battleground for German and Soviet forces. In the wake of the

war, Hungary suffered further devastation under Soviet occupation and forty-five years of communist rule.

The author first became interested in Hungary in 1957 and has visited the country numerous times,

beginning in the 1970s. Over the years she has talked with many Hungarians, both scholars and everyday

people. Hungary in World War II draws skillfully on these personal tales to narrate events before, during,

and after World War II. It provides a comprehensive and highly readable history of Hungarian participation

in the war, along with an explanation of Hungarian motivation: the attempt of a defeated nation to relive its

former triumphs.

Thomas Sakmyster, Red Conspirator. J. Peters and the American Communist Underground, U.

of Illinois Press, 2011. The definitive study of the "Hungarian man of mystery", the shadowy spymaster J. Peters.

In this bold contribution to our understanding of the Communist underground in the United States, Thomas

Sakmyster offers the first biography of controversial spymaster J. Peters, a shadowy figure in the American

Communist party in the 1920s through the 1940s.

Using Peters' unpublished memoir as well as multilingual sources from the United States, the United Kingdom,

Hungary, and the Soviet Union, Sakmyster traces Peters' activities from his arrival in the United States to the

dawn of the Cold War and his deportation back to Hungary. Known as the "Hungarian man of mystery," Peters

emigrated to the United States in 1924 after serving in the Austrian Army during World War I. In America, he

oversaw a false passport operation that facilitated movement of Soviet agents to the United States and

American communists to the Soviet Union. Working under a number of aliases, he constructed a complex

network of informants and spies that stole numerous State Department documents in the 1930s. After years of

hiding underground he was arrested and deported in 1949.

While previous studies of the American Communist movement have relegated Peters to a minor role,

Sakmyster reveals him to be not just the influential leader of conspiratorial Communist activities but also an

important organizer in the open American Communist party. The author of an influential handbook on

Communism, Peters also set up a program to infiltrate the armed forces in the United States. Red Conspirator

is a gripping and important story that advances the ongoing debate over the extent and nature of Soviet

espionage in the United States.

Vermes Gábor: Kulturális változások sodrában. Magyarország 1711 és 1848 között

Budapest: Balassi Kiadó, 2011. A magyar történelem egy kritikus korszakának ábrázolására és elemzésére vállalkozik az Amerikában

élõ történész. Nyomon követi a korszak értékvilágának maradandóságát, illetve változását, azt, hogy

a társadalom miként értékeli a világot különféle szempontokból. A fogalom eléggé tágas ahhoz, hogy

felölelje a politikát és a gazdasági élet változásait is. Ilyen értelemben a kultúra nemcsak a változás

kontextusa, hanem maga a kontextus; a német szociológus, Jorn Rusent idézve „a legjava, a lényege

az emberiségnek.”

Az elsõ rész leíró jellegû Magyarország államáról és társadalmáról, majd rátér az „állandóság érzetére”,

amely az ország viharos történelmi viszontagságai és társadalmi változások ellenszereként bízott a meglevõ

állapotok és értékek állandóságában. Ezt segítette elõ a klasszicizmus széles körû ismerete és gyakorlata,

annak és a keresztényi szeretet tanának a harmóniára épített kulturális értékvilága. A harmadik rész tárgyalja

a felvilágosodás és tradicionalizmus egymással ütközõ értékvilágát, majd tisztázza a biedermeier és a

kulturális nacionalizmus fogalmait, illetve a romantikát és a liberalizmust. Ez a két fogalom kifejtése uralja

a kötet utolsó két részét, a velük karöltve jelentezõ és egyre jobban kiteljesedõ a politikai nacionalizmussal

együtt.

c. Katalin Kadar Lynn was awarded a Gold Cross of Merit from the president of the Hungarian

Republic on March 15, 2011. Lynn's feat was finding, editing, explaining and arranging for the

publication of a series of photographs taken by Margaret Bourke-White in Budapest in 1938.

Bourke-White was "the greatest photojournalist of her day," says Lynn, who came upon the
