Editorial ClouT project was officially launched on April 1 st 2013, on behalf of the European Commission and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan. High expectation from European and Japanese stakeholders is driving the project’s technical progress and achievements. ClouT, which stands for “cloud of things”, is providing infrastructure, services, tools and applications that will be used by municipalities, citizens, service developers and application integrators to create, deploy and manage applications that take advantage of the latest advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud domains. With its user-centric approach, ClouT will also offer to end-users the possibility of creating their own cloud services and share them with other citizens. The project aims at providing a reference Cloud + IoT architecture and developing its instances to be deployed in 4 pilot cities: Santander, Genova, Fujisawa and Mitaka. The ClouT project is bringing together prestigious private companies such as ST Microelectronics, Engineering Ingegneria Informatica SpA, Panasonic, NTT as well as academic institutes such as CEA-LETI, University of Cantabria, Keio University and National Institute of Informatics, which are strongly committed to bring this first EU-Japan initiative to a success. This first edition of the ClouT newsletter will give you an overall view on the project’s concept and its first results. ClouT team will prepare periodic newsletters to keep you informed about significant progress achieved in the project. Enjoy! ClouT Concept

ClouT concept is based on the typical Cloud stratification as illustrated in the following figure:

ClouT Reference Architecture

ClouT project has provided the first version of its reference architecture within its deliverable 1.2 that can be

downloaded at the following link: http://clout-project.eu/documents/deliverables-access/

Based on the first feedbacks from several stakeholders, the project is now proceeding to the second and final version

of the architecture. The above figure gives an overall vision of the architecture which is detailed in the upcoming

deliverable 1.3, which will be available for download at the project website in October 2014 ... So stay tuned!

CPaaS: ClouT Platform layer consists of a set of specialised middleware services in particular for secure access to city data and tools for service mash-up for the stakeholders in the city ecosystem.

CSaaS: ClouT application layer is composed by sample applications developed using the CPaaS and CIaaS APIs and running over the Cloud.

CIaaS: ClouT City Infrastructure is a set of interconnected physical and logical resources (sensors, actuators, legacy devices, social networks, web applications, etc.) all made homogenous using virtualisation techniques.

ClouT Field Trials

ClouT partners give great importance to the Field Trials, which will be launched in the 4 pilots cities by the end of 2014 (see below). Field Trials leverage on ClouT solution for the implementation of a set of applications targeting different domains of the Smart City paradigm. The applications will enable end-users (citizens, municipality technicians, tourists, policy makers, etc.) to naturally interact with the city and its services as well as with other end-users.

SANTANDER

Participatory Citizen in Santander, Spain, is designed to involve citizens in city life by encouraging them, with their mobile phones, to report events and incidents to the city hall. Officials notify the citizens when issues are resolved and other citizens can access to these events and notifications. The application will be extended to other partner cities under common ClouT solutions.

MITAKA

The Paw Collection application in Mitaka, Japan, aims at contributing to health improvement and prevention of isolation of elderly people, by encouraging them to go out from home and walk through suggested routes that match with their interests and abilities. The application provides Social Network Service (SNS) like interface and they can communicate among them through same interests. As characteristic feature, people can try to do same experience that someone else did before. The sensor on mobile phone automatically detects their achievement of the try. People can talk about their achievement with kind of certification. This will facilitate noiseless and open communication on SNS and contribute at building local community. FUJISAWA

Interactive city, Fujisawa, Japan, identifies sporting and cultural events and monitors environmental and weather data such as air quality, temperature and humidity by deploying various sensors throughout the city, and analyzing and classifying data collected from social networks, etc. This information is shared with citizens through a personalized city dashboard on the web, and via mobile applications and public displays. GENOVA

The “Io non rischio” (I don’t risk) application in Genova, Italy, uses environmental and weather data from weather sensors, hydrometers, webcams, etc. and provides information to the citizens and the civil-protection agency of the city. Contact: [email protected]
