. . . Empowered by the Holy
Spirit, we strive to meet the
spiritual and physical needs of
our parish family and the
world community.
ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

Dear Friends,
A great me was had by all as we topped off the summer with our annual picnic at Chestnut Ridge Campground.
Over 200 family and friends gathered for Holy Mass, our picnic lunch and games for the children. Thanks to all who
pitched in to make this picnic a big success.
A'er interviewing a number of folks, I'm pleased to announce that Mrs. Gretchen
Kuhns has been hired to be the Director of Music Ministry here at St. Patrick's. For
the past 12 years she has been the Director of Music at St. Dominic in Youngstown and
has been playing the organ since her grade school days at St. Ma.hias in Youngstown.
We look forward to Gretchen's new role here in our parish family. We will welcome
her and her family to St. Pat's in the near future. With that, anyone called to the music
ministry as cantor, choir member, tradional and/or contemporary or musician, and
would like to share your gi's with the parish, please call the parish house so we can enable Gretchen to have a smooth
transion to St. Patrick's. I am very happy to have Gretchen in our Pastoral leadership team at St. Pat's.
Our next social and fellowship is in two weeks, Sept. 29 a'er the 8:30 & 11:00 am Masses. Our Health & Wellness
ministry will be present for blood pressure screenings.
As we celebrate Catechecal Sunday this weekend, we join parishes throughout the United States as we pray a
special blessing upon our catechists and all who share the Good News and teach the faith to young and old alike in our
parish family. The theme this year is, "Stay with us". Catechecal Sunday is a great opportunity for all of us to
remember that we, by virtue of our Bapsm, are entrusted with handing on the gi' of faith in our words and acons,
to evangelize and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
As the growing season comes to an end, I know that you'll agree that our parish campus looks beauful. That's
due to the daily watering and caring for the flowers and planters on the porco. Kathy and Jim Marshall have cared for
the plants all summer long. So, on behalf of all of us, THANK YOU! Also, Kathy & Jim Marshall, John Augustyn, John
Stun and Andy Acierno have taken great care of our cemetery. Thank you so much for the hours of hard work and
care given to the final resng place of so many of our parishioners.
Next weekend, we will have a second collecon to benefit the Youngstown Blue Coats, as they prepare to
purchase items for those less fortunate than ourselvesfor the upcoming winter.
Finally, in this week's bullen you will find the 2019 Fesval Report. It reflects a lot of hard work on the part of so
many. Thank you all who had a part in the fesval, as well as, all who supported the fesval. The dates for our 2020
fes#val are August 6, 7, 8 & 9. God bless us all!
Have a great week, Fr. Mike

"T I …"
In an essay in the Naonal Catholic Reporter [January 2014], the late writer and poet Brian Doyle lamented a "sin"
he commi#ed that had a sobering and lasng effect on him. His tenyearold son had been fighng with his brother for
what seemed like an eternity. Dad's demands that he cool it were met with indifference. Finally, Dad had had enough. "I
roared at my son and grabbed him by the shirt collar. I frightened him so badly that he cowered and wept, and when he
turned to run, I grabbed him by the arm so roughly that he flinched, and it was that flicker of fear and pain across his
face, the bright, eager, holyriveng face I have loved for ten years, that stopped me then and haunts me sll, for I am
the father of his fear. I sent it snarling into his heart, and I can never get it out now, which torments me."
As soon as Brian let go of his arm, the boy "sprinted away and slammed the door and flew off the porch and down
the street. I stood there simmering in shame. Then I walked down the hill into the laurel thicket as dense and silent as
the dawn of the world and found him there huddled and sobbing. We sat in the moist, green dark for a long me, not
saying anything, the branches burly and paent. Finally, I asked quietly for his forgiveness and he asked for mine and we
walked out of the woods, handinhand, changed men."

Most of our struggles to forgive are stumbles we make in hurng those we love most. In the same awkward situaon,
we can be both the aggrieved father whose discipline is more than jusfied and the selfcentered son who hurts
deeply the ones who love him the most. As Brian Doyle learned in his encounter with his son, we all possess the grace
to forgive; the love of God empowers us to seek forgiveness and make right what our selfishness has broken or
sha$ered.

CONVERSION SERIES BY BISHOP ROBERT
BARRONFOLLOWING THE CALL OF CHRIST
Bishop Barron offers us some very insighGul thoughts
about six biblical stories of conversion, demonstrang
how six ordinary people were met by Jesus and called to
a be.er life through Him. Bishop Barron explains how
conversion is not so much a oneme event, but a life
long process. He explains, “Jesus Christ calls us in
thousands of different ways to follow Him, as we strive
on the path for spiritual excellence.” Please consider
joining us as we share our own thoughts and experiences
on how we respond to Christ’s calling.

This Sunday we celebrate Cateche#cal Sunday, a day
the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has set
aside to acknowledge and commission all those called to
share in the ministry of catechesis. Although we all have
a role in passing on our faith to the next generaon, our
catechists devote themselves to the ministry of
catechesis in the Church. “Catechesis is an educa"on of
children, young people and adults in the faith of the
Church through the teaching of Chris"an doctrine in an
organic and systema"c way to make disciples of Jesus
Christ.” (CCC#5). This is one of the most important
missions entrusted to us in passing on our beauful
Catholic faith.
At St. Pat’s we are very blessed to have such a team
of dedicated catechists to carry on this mission. We have
a vibrant Parish School of Religion for children and teens
from Kindergarten through high school on Sunday
mornings and a high school Celebrate Team which meets
in the a'ernoons. Our catechecal team consists of our
pastor, our staff members and thirty volunteer catechists
who are very passionate about teaching our young
people the Good News of Jesus Christ. We not only have
classes just for students, but also include the Family Class
Time so that parents can also parcipate in their
children’s learning experience. We also have ongoing
faith formaon for adults and RCIA classes for new
Catholics. Learning and growing in our faith never ends.
The mystery of God connues to draw us into new ways
of understanding and helps us to grow in God’s goodness
and grace each day. This awareness and appreciaon of
God’s presence helps us to grow in our understanding of
stewardship as well. It helps us to be mindful of all the
blessings that God gives us and that our me, talent and
possessions are resources that should be shared for the
common good of all. Being a good steward helps us to
lead a life that is pleasing to God in all that we say and all
that we do at home, at school or at our workplace. Living
a life of a good steward should be at the heart and center
of every disciple’s life.
Today, as we give thanks and commission all who
share the Catholic faith in catechecal ministry. Let us
also give thanks and appreciaon to the first teachers of
the faith…our parents, grandparents and even our great
grandparents. Through their faith, hope and love they
connue to pass on their rich tradions, prayers and
great examples of discipleship.
God bless you,
Karen Bartos, Coordinator of Religious Educaon

PLANNING
Have you ever wondered if anyone ever does this?
The simple answer is YES. The church has received many
generous bequests from a number of estates over the years.
Many Catholics have determined that they wish to provide for
the church through a giM from their estate. Contact Deacon
John at the parish house, 3305341928, for more informaon.
Prayer for Catechists
O God, our Heavenly Father, you have given us the gift of these catechists to be heralds of the Gospel to our parish family. We lift them up to you in thanksgiving and intercede for them concerning their hope and needs, May we be attentive to the presence of your Word in them, a Word that lifts up and affirms, calls forth and challenges, is compassionate and consoles. We pray that our parish family will always be blessed with those who have responded to the call to share in Christ’s prophetic mission as catechists. May we too be open to the universal call to serve that Christ addresses to all of his disciples, contributing our gifts to the communion of faith, the Church. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
