What is Wearable device?A Wearable Device is a device that could be worn on the body. Wearable devices could be anything from a small wrist mounted system to a bulky head mounted display as shown below:

Inventor of Wearable Devices1991: Started the Wearable ComputingProject at MIT.1995: Worlds first covert wearable computer camera and display concealed in ordinary eyeglasses. 1997: PhD from MIT inthis field 2003: Works atUniversity of Toronto .

Present Scenario

Why use Wearable? They are wearable!Always with you, not as easily forgotten.Instant access, information anywhere.Laptop requires time to prepare for use.PDA requires use of both your hands.

Wearable can become a part of you.Transparent use, not just a thing.

Who uses Wearable today?TechniciansBlueprints, etc.Field workersAccess to information given by remote experts.Military personnelSoldiers, monitoring health, equipment, etc.Maps and terrain.Infrastructure (sewers, roads) in urban areas.ResearchersFeatures:Consistency:There is always a constant interaction between the computer and the user and hence there is no need to turn the device on or off.Multi-Tasking:Wearable computer provides computational support even when the users hands, voice, eyes, or attention is actively engaged with the physical environment.Mobility:Wearable computers must go where the wearer goes. They are always on and their wearer can access them anytime. What do we need for a wearable computer?Depends, but these parts are common:

Head-mounted display.Camera recording view.Audio, e.g. speaker and microphone(mic).Input device, e.g. keyboard.The computer itself.Network connection.Head-Mounted Display (HMD)Small screen, typically covering one of your eyes.

Works like an ordinary monitor, providing an image floating in the air in front of you.

LCD or TFT technology.Used to be a real CRT in the old days.

Head-Mounted Display (HMD)Transparent displaysAllows augmented reality, where virtual information overlaps the real world.

Opaque displaysLess sensitive to the background noise.

State of the artSmallest.Advanced.

CameraAny small camera.Ordinary web camera.Custom made camera.

Suitable placementHead, follows users gaze.Shoulder, more stable.

Input Device KeyboardCanestas IR keyboard.Arm-strapped keyboard.Twiddler chording keyboard.

MouseTwiddler, again.

Input DeviceGesturesThe Gesture pendant ->For controlling smart homesFingers for dialing numbers

Voice recognitionSuitable at times, but not as a generic solution for everything.

Multi-modal interfacesCombining several types of input,e.g: voice and gestures.

Output DeviceSight Visual outputHMD, wrist watch...

Hearing Audio/sound/speech/music.Speakers, earplug/headset...

Touch Tactile feedbackExample: The radar vest, allowing a person to feel objects in the surrounding.

Taste and smell Not that common, yet.The Computer itselfAnything small but powerful enough!Laptop or TabletPCPC104 (a small PC)XybernautPDA, iPAQ, ToshibaOr something else.

Network ConnectionBenefits of having a network.Access to the Internet.Communication.

Wireless network connection.WaveLAN, IEEE802.11bGPRS or UMTS (3G)BluetoothInfra-red

Power SourceBatteries add size, weight, and inconvenience to wearable computers.

However, there is no stopping to use to any of the miniature batteries, for example Lithium, Li-MnO2, Li-C, that are currently being used in electronic gadgets.

Applications

Augmented Memory

Elderly or people with poor memory.Remember name and face of people.Image processing can recognize a face and map it to the persons name and affiliation.

How should it be presented?

Visual FilterUser wears non-transparent glasseswith integrated displays, experiencesthe world through a camera.

Computer processed video stream. Enhance contrast. Adjust colors. Night vision. Enlarged view.

Visual FilterFisheye lense for reading text.

Remapping around blind spots.

Wearable GamingGolmoo is a peripheral device for gamers. When the users put their thumb on the Golmoo Wearable Gaming Peripheral, the device is automatically turned on.

BodyPad - group of wearable sensors Turn a person's arms and legs into a joystick for PlayStation or Xbox fighting games.

Wearable Computer in a Wrist Watch

Wrist watch running Linux and XFree86.

Clock and video application.

24Wearable ShoesThe shoes records the amount of exercise a child does and converts it into television watching time

AdvantagesPortability

Hands free use

Comfortable

Always on the task it is designed

Quick to access

Fashionable

DisadvantagesEquipment can be heavy

Expensive

Some wearable computers can consist lot of wiring

Can cause irritation in heat

Side effects such as headache

ConclusionWearable computer will provide safety, efficiency and comfort for users.

True extension of mind and body.

Enhance the quality of life of the user at work place and in all parts of daily life.
