Why Standards and IoT?
A good standard
• Addresses widespread need
• Accelerates (reduces barrier for) innovation
A valuable standard
• Is consistently and widely implemented in target platform(s)
• With few exceptions, becomes “invisible” (do people think about 802?)
• Opens market opportunities for adopters, regardless of their size
Having IoT standards will allow for widespread market adoption and implementation

IEEE Standards Association
Initiatives for Augmented Reality
IEEE-SA and Augmented Reality
SA work in AR began in 2014, with a focus on building the SA's presence in the AR community through active participation in the AR technology community. This included:
– Participation in industry events and trade shows since 2014 with an exhibit to introduce IEEE-SA and connect with the AR community
Launch of several IEEE-SA Industry Connections activities
– Industry Connections is a “pre-standards” program that brings together participants on emerging tech issues to collaborate on a range of projects and deliverables (e.g.roadmaps, white papers, events and standards proposals)
– 1) AR Directions and Standards; 2) Smart Glasses interest group; and 3) AR application for oil, gas and utility industries
New standard P1589 Standard for an Augmented Reality Learning Experience Model - launched in early 2015

SA Presence in AR Community
Annual presence at Augmented World Expo - significant engagement including exhibits and multiple presentations by IEEE-SA staff and volunteers relative to standards and applications to accelerate AR technology solutions
Industry Workshops on Augmented Reality
– Co-sponsorship and presentations at Augmented Reality in Leading Utilities -- A workshop hosted by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) on the use of AR in energy utility applications
– Hosted AR in Oil & Gas Industry workshop in collaboration with the IEEE Industrial Applications Society
Participation in the Augmented Reality Enterprise Alliance (AREA)

Standardization
No effective established information
security methodology in the field of
sensor networks.
The cost of the sensor demanded in
various application is still too expensive.
IoT needs interface standardization,
particularly for the sensor networks.
There are many IoT terminals, thus
requiring these terminals to be lower
cost maintenance than currently.
Business

this is the biggest opportunity and the
biggest challenge.

Open Source
IEEE & Open Source
IEEE is expanding its collaborative platform by embracing open source processes, communities, standards, specifications and tests
– Market interest in building synergy between open source and standards development is growing
– An approach that leverages synergies between open source and standards development processes offers complementary benefits for industry
– IEEE is ideally suited as the environment through which the global standards and open source development communities can collaborate to achieve the synergies that they seek
27
IEEE & Open Source
An approach that leverages synergies between open source and standards development processes offers complementary benefits for industry.
– Neither standards nor open source will replace the other. They are often complementary, and there are places for both.
Open source and standards can be used together in powerful ways:
– Open source software can be used to prototype standards
– Open source software can be referenced or included in a standard
– An open source project could identify the need for a standards-development project
– Testbeds for verifying standards can be open source
Achieving synergy between open source and standards development can accelerate the path to a good standard that is ready to be implemented immediately

5G Activities
Wider Range of Requirements
Internet at a Crossroads
IEEE, like many other organizations, believes that 5G ecosystem is rather large and will cover many different areas
– Not only an evolution of LTE
– New services, new technologies, new frequencies (6 GHz), new industries, new business models
– Multi connectivity across bands & technologies (carrier aggregation with integrated MAC across sub- 6GHz & above 6GHz, 802.X and macro cells (legacy)
– Rethinking” of fundamental areas used in previous ‘Gs’ (cell architectures, antennas, core networks, etc.)
31Introduction to the IEEE Internet Initiative
32
IEEE 5G Standards: Goals

for 5G industry-wide consensus
development
IEEE 5G Standardization: Vision
The underlying vision of IEEE-5G is to contribute to the next generation holistic communications ecosystem, and to enable new mobile services to the end user, by leveraging on standardisation opportunities.
Objectives
– Offer an entry point towards IEEE-5G related initiatives, information, publications, training, events, standards, communities, etc.
– Provide easy access to SDOs, NGOs, operators, service providers, etc. to engage with IEEE in 5G
