UNITY: The Tough Mudder home page demonstrates unity of design with similar sized elements in close proximity, aligned to frame a larger focal element.

VARIETY: The PADI website has numerous colors, image sizes, shapes and organic lines. Diving is a visually driven activity and the interest created by the site would draw potential divers to explore further.

BALANCE: Two rectangles on one side of the composition are sized in such a way as to balance the larger one on the left. Color choice adds to this composition.

SCALE AND PROPORTION: This page uses a proportionally oversized image of the iconic profile of the movie’s subject. The scale brings gravity and attention to the subject.

RHYTHM: The smaller photographs surrounding the larger one cause the viewers eye to move from image to image, giving a sense of flow. This pattern is repeated when scrolling down the page.

EMPHASIS: Lens is the photojournalism blog for the New York Times. The photos dominate their home page, being the largest element and aligned to the center on a plain black background.

SIMPLICITY: The opening page for this designer is as simple as it gets. The use of white space with a strong black font creates contrast and highlights the focal point.
