The L-shaped kitchen is one of today’s most popular kitchen aesthetics, and offers a great option for a variety of multipurpose kitchens. Although the layout is best suited to a larger space, the potential variations make it an easy fit for almost any style, and enhance both traditional and modern themes.

So simple that it often gets forgotten, the I-shaped kitchen, also referred to as a single galley kitchen, is a great solution for smaller-home spaces. From open lofts to studio apartments, this layout is often the only available solution for many builds. In terms of style, this single-wall setup oozes simplistic and modern aesthetics throughout.

The U-shaped layout is best for busy kitchens, keeping everything within an easy and accessible reach. Also referred to as the C-shaped kitchen, this layout includes a peninsula, with many styles offering the fridge on a wall outside of the U. This keeps it inside the work triangle, but away from any potential counter space. A layout suited to large and small spaces, of both modern and traditional themes.

THE GALLEY

Traditional galley layouts stick to a simple and efficient pattern – the sink, prep and range stand in a single line, with the prep area easily-accessible from both cooking and cleaning spaces. However today, galley styles are often made more flexible to enhance modern lifestyles, and include a kitchen table, open walls and additional seating areas.

The kitchen work triangle is often considered to be the ultimate design layout for many kitchen styles, and although it’s important to reference the work triangle in a kitchen remodel, it isn’t always the solution to every layout problem. Consider what works best for you, and make sure the route between work centres – cooking, prep and cleaning – is direct and accessible.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN LAYOUTS

The kitchen is a particularly high-traffic area, especially in larger family homes, so the main layout should be comfortable, and easy-to-use by all. Take simple things into consideration; such as counter height, door sizes and shelving position when designing. These finer details can make a dramatic difference in who will be able to access and use your kitchen space.
