User Experience and Sustainability
• We can reduce our footprint by
– Producing more with less
– Consuming better, wiser and less
– Designing products with a better User Experience
Let‟s look at a few
“challenging” designs
Who may be at fault…
• We as designers! – (Human factors International – How to Design for the Big)
– We designed products that defined the consumer age
– We designed products that people do not need
– We designed products with huge externalised lifecycle costs
Usability
“Usability really just means making sure that something works well:
• that a person of average (or even below average) ability and
experience
• can use the thing
• – whether it’s a website, a fighter jet, or a revolving door –
• for its intended purpose without getting hopelessly frustrated.”
-Steve Krug (2000)
Importance of UX
• Create products that are:
– Usable, useful, credible, desirable, accessible,
valuable, findable
– Sustainable
– Create a positive user experience for users
• Conduct user research
– Not to develop out of one person’s point of view
– But what do the users need??
