Mission Statement:It is my goal, as both a student and as an employee in the field of Architectural Design, to continue an education towards a Masters in Architecture. Through obtaining a Masters Degree in Architecture I will be able to prepare myself for certification through the American Institute of Architecture (AIA). Upon completion of certification, it will be my goal to use the knowledge I have gained to design new and inventive sustainable buildings. Through an honest and ethical practice I plan to assist clients meet their architectural needs while implementing the newest and most sustainable building practices, while also continu-ing to educate myself in the latest technologies available in design and construction of buildings.

PrefaceMatthew Ryan Bonnette
Throughout my life, architecture has been an interest which has been a driving force behind the paths I have taken, leading me to where I am today. From a young age, I discovered what architecture was and it became a dream of mine to obtain a degree and license in the practice of architecture.
I began taking an architecture and AutoCAD course in my senior year of high school at McNeil High School in Austin. Upon taking the course, my interest in architecture grew. After graduating high school, I attended Austin Community College in order to complete my core courses and continue education in architecture. While at Austin Community College, I completed a number of courses in the study of architecture and AutoCAD training. There I enrolled in a residential architecture course which sparked my interest in residential architecture.
It was while I was enrolled at Austin Community College that I began working for Kipp Flores Architects, an Austin based architecture firm specializing in single and multi-family dwellings with clients in twenty nine states. Under the direction of Cary Kipp and Sabas Flores, I began training in site planning and computer graphics. While working for Kipp Flores Architects, my role in the company has increased to plan changes which includes working along side designers to find the best solutions to the problems at hand, handling the companies graphic need for clients in both two dimensional and three dimensional floor plan and elevation graphics, and beginning my IDP training hours for NCARB. My work with Kipp Flores Architects has increased my interest in residential architecture, and has helped direct my career path. Richard Mier once wrote about houses that, “symbolically they have always maintained a potent force, both as a vivid representation of lives lived inside their walls and as a powerful influence over the changing course of architecture over centuries”.
After completing most of my core courses at Austin Community College, I transferred to The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) College of Architecture. While there, I continued working thirty hours a week with Kipp Flores Architects in Austin, and commuting to San Antonio for classes. At UTSA, I studied all different aspects of design which has increased my interest in architecture and specifically in sustainable design practices.

OA Place for SunlightProject:To design and build a structure which represents a “Place For Sunlight”. Students are restricted to the use of lattice wood, string and cloth to build the structure and must design and implement joints with these materials. The structure must be free standing with a size limitation of 6’x6’x12’. Upon the completion, each project is placed along side other students work to create a “street”. The project should be able to withstand the elements outside for a period of two days while on display in Bill Miller Plaza. Built by myself and three other students. I was primary designer and builder of the project

Presentation KioskProject:Students were to design a kiosk to be used by the College Of Architecture as a temporary student project display. The kiosk would be located on the University of Texas at San Antonio downtown campus grounds for public viewing of projects. The kiosk was to be able to house two projects, consisting of one model and one drawing. The kiosk should be able to protect the projects from the elements, as well as use natural day lighting in order to light the space. Design and drawings created by myself.

OUTSA Cafe & PavilionProject:Design a Cafe and Pavilion to be placed on campus at the University of Texas at San Antonio downtown campus. The cafe will be utilized by students as a place to eat and work on school projects. The pavilion will be used as outside seating and as a place for performances.Requirements:Buildings must use as little electricity as possible and find alternate ways to cool the building.Concept:Connect the site with the city of SanAntonio and its main attraction, TheRiver Walk.

Artist Loft ProjectProject:Design a loft to be built in San Antonio, adjacent to the river, for a photographer. The loft should consist of living section, along with a gallery and a place for the artist to work.Restrictions:Building must be within 9 meters x 21 meters x 10 meters, and will be designed to fit between the lofts designed by the other students.Design Idea:A modern architecture design with the use of exposed metal floor trusses on the first floor to help make the kitchen look larger. The use of large windows on the front of the loft will help to light the space with natural day lighting.

OAnimal ShelterProject:Design a canine & feline animal adoption center to be used in the San Antonio area. The adoption center should be able to adequately house both dog and cats, as well as be able to showcase the animals for adoption. Must use the knowledge gained by the field trip visits to local animal shelters in the design.

8-Plex Student HousingProject:Find a site within 10 minutes of Bill Miller Plaza and design an 8-plex student housing facility to be occupied by the students of the University of Texas at San Antonio downtown campus.Requirements:Must have at least to loft units, two one bedroom units and two two bedroom units. Buildings could not be over 40’ tall, must have at least one covered and one uncovered parking space per unit. Must leave space for future development.Concept:Community. The design of the building is to give the students a sence of community, in which the students could get to know ans work with fellow students to succeed in school. The community center, center corridor, and roof top access helps to bring the students together.

Project:Design a multiuse building to occupy the site located adjacent to Main Plaza.Requirements:Street and River level must be made up of commercial shops/eateries. Second level must be made up of offices. Finally, the third through sixth floor must be made up ofresidential living space. The building must allow for pedestrian traffic from Main Plaza to the Riverwalk, and the structure should include an element of green architecture.Concept:The concept for this multi-use building is a sense of connectivity. The building utilizes a large open center in order to connect the residential, office and commercial levels. The building also utilizes a large opening on the main plaza side which sees through to a large perforated metal screen which opens to the river. Finally, the building uses design elements on the exterior to help to connect the new structure to the older structures which help to make up main plaza.

OCollege Recreation CenterProject:Design a College Recreation Center to be utilized by the students at the University of Texas at San Antonio downtown campus.Requirements:Create the recreation center as one part in a two part design. The recreation center will be located on the same lot as the Swim Center and should be designed to connect with the future swim center.Concept:The concept for this project although it may seem simple, is recreating community through the design of a building. After studying communities starting with large scale cities down to residential communities all of which keep a similar aspect. At the center of the community there is an area which is highly accessed by the community, as the rings start expanding out from the center the spaces begin to be less entire public oriented and more oriented to users with specific needs, until we end up in the private living which is no longer public space. I intend to represent this by placing at the center of the building the locker/bathrooms since this is a place which will need to be accessed by all users of the building, and then begin expanding out with areas such as the café, basketball and tennis courts since these are areas of high interest to many of the users. Since the site is small the expanding rings will begin to expand upwards where the second floor is composed of cardio, weights and specialty workout rooms, and beginning on the third floor will be the outer ring of private living areas. The living areas will be organized to promote community with a central congre-gating terrace, with the apartments forming an outer ring around the terrace.

Project:Design a swim center adjacent to the College Recreation CenterRequirements:Create an indoor swim center to be utilized by the University of Texas at San Antonio. Create an outdoor pool for use by the community adjacent to the downtown campus. Concept:Create a facility that plays in with the San Antonio River Walk. Sink the pools below street level with an outdoor pool in the center, indoor aquatic center to one side and student housing to the other.

OFarmers MarketPROJECT: Design a Farmers Market for the use of the people of San Antonio, located at 1500 S. Zarzamora Street San Antonio, TX, 78207-7210. The Farmers Market will be located behind San Antonio Produce Terminal. The Farmers Market is to include places for the sale of produce goods, meat goods, dining facilities, permanent vendors as well as temporary or seasonal vendors.
CONCEPT: Farmers Markets are typically seen as a shopping destination for the health conscious individuals who wish to take care of their bodies by eating healthy farm fresh produce. Because of this, the Farmers Market was designed to promote outdoor activity for the customers who visit the market. There is a large outdoor vendors plaza for temporary vendors to set up kiosk between the plaza’s clock tower and reflection pond. The retail vendors are located at one end of the market and all the food based shopping is based at the other end of the market. This it to allow for the smells of all the fresh meats, produce and bakeries to intermix to create a pleasant aroma for the customers of the market. Both the meat market and produce market buildings use an accordion style windows and doors to allow the market spaces to be fully opened up creating a natural air flow in and around the buildings. The market also incorporates many environmental features. The market takes advantage of rain fall for water harvesting to be used to water surrounding vegetation, clean floors and parking areas, as well as in the bathroom facilities. The market also takes advantage of the suns natural energy with the use of solar panels on the grounds and on the roofs of the buildings to harvest the suns energy. This energy is used to power the many electrical items of the market as well as to heat water on the grounds. Also, since almost everything at the market is compost able, the market takes advantage of this in recycling its by products to produce compost fertilizer to be reused to help grow new plants. These environmental features are proudly displayed in the market to show the customers how the market is run and that the Farmers Market is doing its part for the environment.
FEATURES:-ENVIRONMENTAL FEATURES -RECYCLING/COMPOST: Compost is formed when organic matter (material that comes from plants or animals) decomposes aerobically (with oxygen). The resulting nitrogen- and carbon-rich substance can be added to soil to improve its structure, provide and hold soil nutrients, prevent erosion, and encourage beneficial insects and microorganisms.
WHAT IS COMPOST ABLE Fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry, seafood, shellfish, bones, rice, beans, pasta, bread, cheese, and eggshells, oyster shells, burritos (without foil wrappers), etc. waxed cardboard, napkins, paper towels, paper plates, paper cups (without lids) paper milk cartons, tea bags, coffee grounds/filters, floral trimmings, tree trimmings, leaves, grass, brush, weeds, paper plates, paper coffee cups, and "bio-plastics," which look like plastic but are made out of corn, soy, potatoes, or other organic materials.
-DUAL AXES TRACKING SOLAR PANELS: A dual axis tracking system is a system that follows the sun in multiple angles ensuring that the sunbeam angle is 100% correct on the panel. By tracking the sun, the efficiency of the solar panels can be increased by 30-40%. The dual axis tracking system is also used for concentrating a solar reflector toward the concentrator on heliostat systems.
-SOLAR AND PREMIUM METAL ROOFS: Metal roofing on all buildings which is the ideal roofing material to maximize rain water harvesting from the roof tops of building. Inserted between the standing seams are premium solar panels used to collect the suns energy and convert it into electricity.
-RAIN WATER HARVESTING: The tanks are constructed from a linear low polyethylene membrane laid on a compacted sand base. Inside the tank are specially constructed void expanders that support the structure and are strong enough to build over when the tank is completed. Once the tank is in place, it is protected by an outer wrapping of geotextile mesh and buried below ground level. The recycled water is returned to a dual water system in the roof of the building for use.

OImmigration MuseumProject: Design an Immigration museum for the people of San Antonio to be located at the corner of Nueva Street and St Marys Street. The Museum will house exhibits showing the different cultures of America and to tell the stories of the immigration from other countries into America.Concept: America is made up of many different cultures from all over the world. America was started as a country for immigrants, with new immigrants entering the country each year. I wanted the building to be an attraction that would be seen as another tourist attraction to add to San Antonio, as well as a place where the citizens of San Antonio would visit multiple times. Because of this, I wanted the building to have a very appeasing as the tic appearance. The building is located right on the San Antonio River, which is already a very popular attraction for tourist as well as the citizens of San Antonio. The Building promotes a lot of Curtain Glazing to help bring in natural lighting into the building to light the exhibits. Because some of the exhibits could be harmed by direct natural lighting there are Curtain walls behind the glazing to help allow the light into the building while also diverting the natural light away from the exhibits. The building is made up of six large cast concrete partitions which are unfinished both inside and out. The buildings first floor consist of a cafe with both indoor and outdoor seating for visitors to eat while at the museum. Also, there is a gift shop for visitors to purchase different items to remember their trip to the museum. The first floor also houses the largest exhibit space for the exhibits which are fairly constant in the museum. In the second floor there is the traveling exhibit space for special exhibits that might come through the San Antonio area. The basement is dedicated to the storage and preservation of exhibits. The museum also houses its own theater space for presentations and immigration history movies.

Utilize the lot to allow for future development. Design for ADA to allow for handicap access.Concept:A place for interaction. Creating a place for the researchers to come stay for extended periods of time while working at the research facility. By creating outdoor spaces that allow for seating, allows for interaction between the researcher. To utilize the views and breezes of the area, all the apartments utilize pocket doors, accordion doors and bypass doors which allow the apartments to be fully opened up to the outside.
