Top 8 Web Design Mistakes to Avoid in 2017

Here we go…welcoming year 2017 with new ideas.

A brand new year and new thoughts flows in, reminding us the mistakes we did the previous

year while web designing.

In this article I have jotted down the vital points that you should do and things you must

avoid while web designing. I am sure, when you reach to the conclusion of this article you

will be sure what you should be actually avoiding.

Technology is improving every single day and so should we, website design and re-design is

certainly a big challenge for web designers – I know it downright, being a web designer in

the past.

Webmasters are spending a bulk of time and money to make their website user-friendly as

well as intuitive to the core. This gives rise to the high demand and of course more

opportunity to the web designers – that brings in the need to implement new creative ways

to meet the requirements.

Web designer must be aware about what to do and how to make the web design principles

stand out. Strategizing the design principles while avoiding lame design ethics – is

imperative. Let’s find out some of the mistakes that designers still act on (even the

experienced ones) and should avoid those in 2017;

Addiction to Free Design Services:

Free web designing platforms – a complete NO

I’m not saying this because we are a web and mobile development company but because a

lot of our clients have gone through this and failed miserably, which directly knocked a hole

on their website aka (as known as) their business.

One of our customer and what his words were when he reached us through our website;

“I have been using a web design platform, it seemed easy when I started off but

almost a month after I think it didn’t help me as I thought it would. Plus, my website

seems buggy and I am not able to change the way I desire it to. It’s got restrictions.

Don’t know what to do now!”

- One of our customer | Andolasoft | of ‘2016

Free websites have lots of backend coding which makes the page loading time and

performance of website slow and more such reasons why you should not be going for a free

design platform if it’s not for a high school summer project.

Professional web designers help in designing creative websites the way you want it in

addition giving their own expertise to it making the website stand-out.

Is your Website Responsive – get a check!

Time has changed and so should we with our design concept.

Like in my Grandma’s time – it was only essential if the website was looking good in the

desktop screens. But now things have changed, because close to 40% - 50% of your website

visitors will be viewing it from a handheld device like a Smartphone or tablet.

Lack of Quality Content

Content sells. Content is gold.

“By 2017 51% of companies will have an executive in their organization who is directly

responsible for an overall content marketing strategy. (e.g., Chief Content Officer, VP or

director of content)”

That’s how important content is nowadays, which is a crucial part of the web design.

Because, it’s very important not only bind a good content with respect to the business

domain but also to place the content in the right place that would make sense and visitors

to recognize those content with respect to the particular page.

Quality information and content are not only as plain text but also in the form of blog,

images, videos, Infographics which provides valuable information to visitors. High quality

fresh contents bring more visitors to websites and make website conversion probabilities

higher.

Missing Calls to Action – this is like the cherry on the cake

Call to action (CTA) is the process to ask visitors to take action in a website or interact with

the website like sharing their emails, posting comment and review, sharing content to their

social accounts, action to purchase a product or a service. This helps in engaging visitors

naturally with your page content.

Lack of SEO– this Stuff is like the dessert after dinner (A must)

SEO is much needed for every website you design to get ranked in the top of the search

engine page result. Website needs to be updated with the latest trends and algorithm

changes of major search engines like Google, yahoo and Bing.

SEO implementation is a science altogether that can’t be explained entirely here. But it’s a

regular process that needs to be coded with the web design.

Opening Multiple Windows

Creating multiple windows with pop-ups is not a wise way to design a website.

Users or visitors are not interested to see random pop-ups even if there are some valuable

content or information. Keeping valuable information for the website visitor in is a wise

option for designer.

Absence of Analytics

Website analytics is as important as eating your first meal of the day.

Measuring various website metrics is a whole science unto itself and important. An in-depth

analytics does really matter; the important thing is that at the very least you have some way

of measuring your key objectives and accordingly you can use this information to see if

you’re moving in the right direction with your design and with any future changes you might

need to make.

Lack of Social Presence

Strong social media presence not only helps in building your organizations social identity but

also helps in building brand name and stay connected with potential customers. Keep your

social media links in-sync with your website and allow visitors to share your content or

images to increase the visibility which again points conversion of organic leads to the

website.

This is not the end, but still this is the least that you should be following

A well calculated web design standard is the key to make the website a success. It’s

absolutely necessary to design the website in a way such that each visitor;

- Is able to read and consume what he wants to find out from your website

- Intuitive and fun to work around the website to gather information

- Great images and visuals to make it more interactive

To have at least 50% returning visitors – that’s what the website should achieve at the end

of the month. I am sure the above list will help you to counteract web design slip-ups and

help you to make it a way better one for you, your client and the visitors.

Share your ideas with comments and I will personally reply to your thoughts or questions.
