WHAT IS THE MALE GAZE The male gaze is a theory thought up by Laura Mulvey. The theory believes that males are dominant in films and that women are never the center of attention or the protagonist. Instead they are objects of desire and seen through a males point of view.

In the film Tucker and Dale vs evil in the first thirty seconds the audience already see a shot of a women undressing. The shot only shows her undressing and no one eles.

EVIDENCE OF THE MALE GAZE

In the first part of the trailer the first dialogue the audience hears is a women saying “did you see the way those guys looked at us?”. This backs up that the women are being looked at and are aware of this. It backs up the male gaze and that the audience are being made clear that women in this film are of desire through a male gaze perspective

The girls in the film are shown in revealing small costumes which backs up that they are seen in the film as something to look at as an object of desire. This is commonly used in films as the film is seen through a male gaze. The girls are typical stereotypes as they are blonde, not as smart as the men in the film and wear revealing clothing.

FEMALE GAZE?Sometimes in films the gaze will be switched this is not common but has been seen more in the last ten years. The gaze can switch so that females are not the desire and instead men are. This can be seen in films when the men are shirtless and have muscles etc. This is not commonly used in horror unless it is a ‘spoof’ horror which is making fun out of horror films. This is more common in other genres such as romantic comedies. The female gaze is less common however is sometimes used in films through a female gaze.
