Morning: Visitor ExperienceDue to open in 2018, V&A Dundee is designed to welcome visitors from
communities across Dundee and Scotland alongside those from around the
world. In this session, you will hear how V&A Dundee is creating a world-
leading, audience-focused visitor experience and take a tour around the
Gardyne campus to see how this translates to the college environment.
Allan McIntyre, Joanna Mawdsley and Julie Muir from V&A Dundee will be your
guides.
Afternoon: Digital StorytellingThe technology we carry can capture stories in simple and engaging ways. This
workshop will cover the basics of digital storytelling using your mobile device to
develop a social media campaign. You will create a story board, conduct interviews
and create a short piece of digital content to share. Bring your smartphone or tablet
with you. If you don’t have access to one, a small number will be available on the
day. Led by Service Design Academy lecturer, Dr Jennifer Jones.

Digital Storytelling
in Context
Context: #citizenrelay (2012)
Context: #citizenrelay (2012)
Supporting your participants
the simple ‘pass it on’ skills
to be able to help you gather
your user research - whilst
amplifying your project &
offering them the chance to
learn new skills in the process.
‘citizen’-led research
So, how can be
used in education?
Context: Digital Commonwealth (2013-2015)
Creative response to the Commonwealth (Games)
from across Scotland, involving diverse range of
individuals/communities
Community media clusters: community media cafes
and digital storytelling workshops;
Schools programme: in-school digital storytelling
workshops with primary and secondary learners in
Scotland’s 32 local authorities;
Creative voices: documentary film, creative writing
and community songwriting around UWS campuses.
Schools programme: in-school digital storytelling
workshops with primary and secondary learners in
Scotland’s 32 local authorities;
57 schools, 23 out of 32 local authorities, 585
participated;
transition initiatives (primary & secondary working
together);
cascading skills (learners becoming digital leaders)
'creative citizenship' responding to the themes of
project – ‘place’, ‘people’, ‘culture’ & ‘exchange’;

Intrigued by how education institutions deal with the
'affordances' of digital and social media - inside and outside
the institutions gates;
Interested in what the ‘digital’ means to learners, teachers
and other stakeholders and whether access and use are
unevenly experienced according to economic, social and
cultural variables;
Interested in how ‘eventification’ (Jakob, 2013) might be used
to accelerate digital developments in education institutions
and embed a critical consideration of digital literacies.

Telling your story: Keep it simple
Keep it simple, practice over the
technology - the ability to record short,
quick interviews that required little
editing & big impact;
By demonstrating how media is made,
in turn, be able to deconstruct the
elements required to tell a story using
your smartphone.
Camera: Battery, hold camera
steady, hold camera right way,
airplane mode.
Light: Natural light, windows,
strip lighting.
Sound: Noises, distractions,
microphone.
Questions: What are you going
to ask? Do you have
permission?
Telling your story: The “No Edit” Interview
In your groups:
You are going to plan and record 2-3 (social
media ready!) interviews between each other, in
response to today’s theme
In your groups:
They must be recorded and uploaded before we
conclude the session, using the hashtag #DAG2G
