TEMPLE TOWNS

“Human Centric Public Spaces”

• The scale of the built form is framed to develop a successful urbanplaza, connected through streets.• A central monolith green space is the Epicenter of the campus andacts as a major node and an active Public realm.

“Monolith Urban Block”

• The Concept for master plan is mainly derivedfrom a monolith , singular land mass or structure ,which could be a strong iconic representation ofbuilt form.•The iconic built mass can develop a singularlanguage and pattern of design yet, have dedicatedspace composition.

“Design principles from South Indian temple towns”

• The main elements are rigid axis passing through the epicenterand four cardinal points identified with towers.• The planning principles are also based on making walk ablecities and limiting the growth to 4 square kilometers.

STREETS & SQUARES

• Creating “Human Centric Public Spaces” connected through streets. • The whole campus can have defined vistas and axis and a genius loci for the campus. • In response to the climatic condition, buildings are oriented North South • Shaded central open space through out the day. • The built form can be more porous and active at the lower level• The longer facades ensures natural day lighting during work hours.

HUMAN CENTRIC

• Climatic response in architecturalfeatures• Connected green corridors with coveredwalkways to encourage pedestrianmovement.

• The campus can be designed withvarious streets and courtyards, which are interfaced with a primarypublic activity and in turn is apotential public node.• The built form is anchored by thesecorridors and central courts.

• The Concept for master plan is mainly derived from a monolith , singularland mass or structure , which could be a strong functional representationof built form.

• The unending vistas and viewing corridors are formed as a result of theconjoint built mass.

• The iconic built mass can develop a singular language and pattern ofdesign yet, have dedicated space composition.

• Design the project for Social Success by recognizingthat success will be measured by the experience of theproject at a range of scales that prioritizes the humanscale.

• Conceiving CAMPUS as a COMMUNITY is the primaryprinciple of Master Plan

• Climatic responsive built forms and open spacegeneration are the key governing factors of the design.

• A typical Indian street - colossal built forms overlooking narrow walkways andcorridors which encounters series of urban open spaces.• A street in the centre of this monolithic block can form the main channel ofmovement.

Central street

• Scale of the central streetcan be derived from criticalday lighting that can bemade available to the workspace.• Central streets act as veryactive public realm withinthe building.

South Indian Temple Town

• Spatial planning of the town reflects overall zoning which are based on functions and operations. • The built forms also reflect the activity with which the region is associated.

COMPARISON

Strategy 3

Temple Towns of South India

• Structured planning pattern• Ceremonial campus planning• Structured Vistas and open spaces• Delineated Zoning of spaceswithout overlaps• Uni directional Street pattern• Defined open spaces• Rigid built form arrangement• Mostly North South orientation ofblocks

Strategy 1

Streets & Squares

• Organic planning form• Structured built form enclosingcentral green areas• Nodes terminating the green channel• Streets and squares framing thepedestrian movement pattern• Porous lower levels of the built form• Maximized North South orientationof the blocks.

Strategy 2

Urban Block

• Singular monolithic built form• Contained central green space, withactivity centers as main nodes• Lower levels of the built form withpublic activities• Low rise built form with maximizedgreen space on the site.• Vistas and connected corridorsunifying the entire campus.• Maximized North South orientation.
