Decorating with what you have: Repurposing
What look do you like?
Start working towards this when you repurpose.
Do you like Cottage, Shabby Chic, Country?
How about Retro & Art Deco?
Perhaps Asian?
Is Traditional or Craftsman your style?
Most of us have an Eclectic or Transitional Look, we get a chance to express different parts of what we like.
Contemporary, Modern, Mid-Century Modern doesn’t have to be uninviting.
How can we turn Sad Sara into Happy Sara? I will show you photos of rooms that need repurposing-BIG TIME! Look at the room and ask yourself what you would do to change this room? Yes we would like to totally redo them but keep in mind this is about repurposing which means using some of what you already own.
Study your room that you want to re-do?
What items do you no longer want?(get them out of room)
What items could be moved or repurposed?
Furniture Layout
• Good for conversation? • If your room is big enough you can
you have two separate areas, or bring furniture into the room away from the wall.
This furniture is too far apart and not good for conversation, terrible
for watching TV
Balance of size and style-this room should have had another solid piece in the room
to balance out the sofa, rather than 3 pieces that were open.
This room is well done with a balance of solid and open furniture. This look also has a
good balance of bringing the yellow to different parts of the room
Do you have a focal point such a view, fireplace or TV? Keep this in mind when arranging your furniture.
Area rugs are great for pulling a room together.
This shows how just moving this bookshelf out of the corner can act as a room divider of sorts.
What colors do you like?
What can you do to achieve the look you want by repurposing?
In the next few slides look how much paint changes a look. Paint is your best friend when it comes to big changes with little expense.

This online photo I found is not a good deco photo however it shows how important size should be for wall not to small or big and don’t hang pictures to high.
Mirrors are great for reflecting windows and for added light. Mirrors open up the wall.
Be creative with fabrics, throws, pillows, drapes- this drape is
actually table clothes
Using a scarf or shawl
When accessorizing use three items that are different shapes and height for interest.
