FIRE HOUSE

First semester’s final project was a firehouse in Dorchester, MA. The area of Dorchester mainly consists of tightly packed tripple deckers and has relatively few public spaces. It also has other firehouses so close by that there really is no need for one here. The firehouse that I ended up designing focussed more on the public than strictly a firehouse. I began to think of a plaza that had benches, vegetation, and a series of vevegetation, and a series of verticle silk screened concrete plains that served as a memorial. The idea was to create a space outside for relief from such a confining area aswell as giving some space inside for the community. I began to play in plaster, because of its similarity to concrete, and came up with the idea to make it seem as though no concrete plain touched another. In section this becomes difficult though because of the need for structure. difficult though because of the need for structure.

The Riverside Pavillion was a design focussing on understanding structure and enclosure. Together with its cafe, the pavilion intends to provide a public place for strollers similar to many other spaces developing on the to many other spaces developing on the Providence River Promenade. The display of native plants in the greenhouse are brought out into the cafe giving the users a wonderful place to rest after school, during lunch, or a wonderful stop while on a stroll along the river. The housing in Boston was the first major project that had an urban context. The program called for 50 units of housing, about half artist and half market rate. Not only did I try to investigate what makes a good apartment, but also investigate many relationships of spaces and users. For example, the relationship between the artists and the rest of the comunity, and also the relationship of this paparticular series of units and the surrounding ones.

The Bath House was the final project for first semester. The goals of the project included a better understanding of approach, arrival, entry, passage, and destination as well as spatial hierarchy. In my project here I was especially interested in the approach to the building and the circulation about approach to the building and the circulation about it. An attempt was made to create a view along paths that looked out into the grove and between programs.

POET’S STUDIO

The Poet’s Studio was a design that focussed on subtracting from a mass rather than building something in an additive way. It was also intended to give students an opportunity to better understand the differences between quantity and quality of differences between quantity and quality of light. In my project here, the hall that leads toward the studio itself is led by tall and narrow slit-like openings intended to entice one forward. Once into the studio an attempt was made to create areas of good views as well as handling the light.
