LUPERCALESEs un programa experimental acerca del diseño de iluminación en áreas urba-nas que explora los mecanismos de participación de las comunidades locales en el diseño del uso de los espacios públicos. Realizamos intervenciones lumínicas para proponer estrategias de reactivación y puesta en valor del espacio público a través de un diseño de iluminación cuidadoso, enfocado en la singularidad del proyecto y orientado a la percepción.

Nace en 2012 impulsado por tres diseñadores independientes de iluminación: Alberto Barberá, Irene Bas y Paolo Portaluri. El proyecto combina activismo, pedagogía y acción directa en entornos urbanos, empleando para ello la iluminación arquitectónica como una herramienta de cuestionamiento de los procesos de producción y planificación urbana. Centrado actualmente enla versión educativa y en las intervenciones temporales, nuestro objetivo es incorporar esta metodología táctica, de intervención rápida y ligera, a nuestros procesos de diseño de iluminación de espacio público, centrados en el contexto social del proyecto y en construir ciudades mejores y más habitables.

LUPERCALESIs an experimental programme around lighting design in urban areas that ex-plores the participation mechanisms of the local communities in the planning development of public space. We propose lighting interventions as a way to detect and test reactivation strategies and added-value to public space, through a perception-oriented lighting design, respectfully caring for the singularity of each project.

Born in 2012 as a collaboration between three independent lighting designers: Alberto Barberá,Irene Bas and Paolo Portaluri. They combine activism, peda-gogy and direct action in the urban context, with architectural lighting used as tool for questioning the processes behind urban planning. During this last year the research has been based in the interchange with communities and students through workshops and temporary interventions on public space. Our objective is to add in the toolbox of our professional practice of lighting design for public space the experience gained by this tactical actions, from the lightweight, fast interventions. We are centered in the social context of each project, looking for building better and more liveable cities.

OUR PHILOSOPHYWe want to talk and discuss about our nightly urban environment, about the way we create and perceive the nocturnal image of our cities, about the lighting of our streets. The availability of new technologies for lighting does not seem to be altering significantly the methodology applied for this purpose, our concepts about, for example, “quality” of lighting, ergonomy, eficiency, safety... All ofthese terms should be strongly revised, in our opinion, and the need to renew the obsolete intalations due to energy eficiency requirements is a good oppor-tunity to do so.

We choose experimentation as a tool to develop our proposals, focused in the lighting design of public places, of spaces where there is a chance for social interchange, between people and between people and their environment, their lightscape. We want to arrange conditions for things to happen, for changes to come in this perception/communication of/with space.

We believe in education as a form of producing and distributing culture for a social change, a form of activism and community building. During one of our workshops, many topics appear that we like to apply in practice: DIY, autonomy, the nightscape of our urban environment as part of a visual indentity and herit-age, the special care that historic sites, public places and old city centres requirein terms of a lighting project... and there is always a concept that flows through everything we do and debate: enablement of citizenship, as a way to favour the commitment of the community in the evolution and planning of their land-scape, their habitat. And to develop a personal criteria towards the policies of urban planning, in general.

OUR METHODRESEARCH + EXPERIMENTATION

Epehemeral interventions will allow us to create temporary spaces of commu-nication and relationship that would give us access to the relevant information we need to face this work of planning, and to the results of our experimental proposals. Applying the urban tactics slogan “short-term action for long-term change”, our installations are ephemeral in time, but focused to obtain a dura-ble effect: ideas that can turn into real projects and processes that can serve asguide for lighting designers. We want to work from the context, from the con-versation with people and their environment.

Our approach is to organize workshops with mixed groups with participants from different background and points of view, with the objective of designing an intervention on a specific site. We record the analysis process of the case study, the results, the multiple views, as a collection of data, sketches, images, videos and useful material to get conclusions directly from the practice and to apply this conclusions in further actions and research.

Our vision is to fundament a practice that would be part of our professional de-velopment as lighting designers. We want to make things with people to better communicate the importance oflight to the communities, giving them the cultural tools and skills to understand, or even modify, the use of public space according to their real needs. For this reason, is very important for us to establish a method to impulse knowledge transfer between the various actors participating in the process, and a multi-disciplinary platform where administrations, citizens, technicians and designers would be able to meet.

NUESTRA FILOSOFÍAQueremos hablar de nuestro entorno urbano nocturno, del modo en que generamos y percibimos la imagen nocturna de nuestras ciudades, de la ilumi-nación de nuestras calles. Los avances tecnológicos en este campo no parecen estar afectando excesivamente a la metodología, a lo que se entiende por un alumbrado urbano de “calidad”, eficiente, seguro, ergonómico... Todos estosconceptos deben ser revisados, y la renovación de obsoletas instalaciones en aras de la eficiencia energética es una buena oportunidad para ello, a nuestro entender.

Elegimos la experimentación como vía de desarrollo para nuestras propuestas, centradas en el diseño de iluminación de espacios públicos singulares, de opor-tunidades de convivencia y relación, entre personas, y entre el paisaje y sus habitantes. Queremos crear las condiciones para que las cosas sucedan, para este cambio.

Entendemos la educación como una forma de producción y distribución de cultura para la transformación social, como una forma de activismo, de desar-rollo comunitario. Durante un taller, además de exponer mediante conferencias el trabajo del diseño de iluminación en entornos urbanos, surgen muchos te-mas que nos interesa experimentar sobre el terreno: la autogestión, la imagen nocturna de nuestras ciudades como parte de nuestro patrimonio visual, el especial tratamiento que requieren los proyectos singulares en los centros históricos y lugares públicos... y sobrevuela un ánimo, una motivación: el ena-blement o “capacitación” del ciudadano como vía para conseguir su implicación y participación en el diseño de su entorno y para el desarrollo de una concien-cia crítica respecto a los temas de alumbrado urbano y planificación urbanística.

NUESTRO MÉTODO INVESTIGACIÓN + EXPERIMENTACIÓN

Las intervenciones temporales permiten crear espacios de intercambio y relación, que, aunque efímeros, pueden aportar información muy valiosa sobre el resultado de la aplicación práctica de ciertos conceptos de diseño experimen-tales. Instalaciones efímeras en duración, pero con un planteamiento de larga duración: ideas que pueden transformarse en proyectos reales y procesos que puedan establecer una guía para los diseñadores. Queremos aproximarnos al diseño de iluminación del espacio público, del entorno urbano, desde el con-texto, desde las personas, donde el diseñador se incorpora a los procesos de transformación como un mediador entre la comunidad y su entorno.

Nuestro planteamiento es organizar workshops con grupos variados en cono-cimientos y puntos de vista, con el objetivo de una intervención en espacios concretos. El proceso de análisis del caso, los resultados, las múltiples miradas de los participantes son guardados como una colección de datos, croquis, im-ágenes y videos, material útil para llegar a unas conclusiones desde la práctica y crear las bases para posteriores acciones e investigaciones.

Queremos trasmitir la importancia de una buena iluminación a las comunidades que viven los espacios públicos, y al mismo tiempo proporcionar las herrami-entas teórico-prácticas para entender, e incluso modificar, el uso de dichos espacios según las necesidades reales. Para esto es fundamental la trasmisión del conocimiento entre los distintos actores involucrados en el proceso, y la creación de lugares de encuentro entre administraciones, plataformas y asocia-ciones cívicas, técnicos, diseñadores y ciudadanía.

PARC SENSE IL·LUMINACIÓ A LA NIT JARDINS DE RUBIÓ I LLUCH, RAVAL, BARCELONA, 11-15 de Febrero 2013

La intervención se diseñó a lo largo de un workshop de 20 horas, con 30 par-ticipantes de diversas procedencias profesionales y académicas, muchos de ellos usuarios y conocedores del caso. Durante las sesiones se pudo realizar un análisis del contexto social, urbanístico y arquitectónico del espacio a interve-nir gracias a la colaboración de agentes sociales del barrio y entidades como la Plataforma Tot Raval, el distrito de Ciutat Vella, la escola Massana o la com-pañía teatral La Perla 29.

La premisa de diseño consistía en la alteración de la imagen nocturna del espa-cio durante una jornada cívica, donde ningún acontecimiento iba a producirse. Esta motivación es doble: una luz que hable de sí misma como poder revitali-zador y dinamizador, generador de situaciones, y un tratamiento del entorno amable y respetuoso tanto con la arquitectura como con los usuarios.

El lugar fue elegido por tratarse de un espacio público infrautilizado con un gran potencial por su situación, arquitectura y características, en el interior de un complejo hospitalario con origen en el siglo XV, junto a la Plaça de la Gardu-nya y entre las calles Carme y Hospital, en la frontera entre el Raval Nord y el Raval Sud.

The intervention was planned in a collaborative manner through the 20-hour workhsop sessions, with the 30 participants from diverse professional and academic background,many of them users and regular visitors to the gardens. Along the sessions we could analyze the social, urban and architectural con-text of the place thanks to the collaboration and engagement of societies and entities from the neighbourhood as Tot Raval Foundation, Ciutat Vella district authorities and social workers, the Escola Massana design school and the thea-tre company La Perla 29, based in the facilities of the complex surrounding the gardens.

The design hypothesis proposed a nocturnal image alteration, a slight distortion of the daily luminous ambient of the place, during an evening where no special activity or event was announced nor programmed. The light would talk about itself, as a means and as potential, as situation generator and space activator, with a kind treatment of the environment and the architecture of the place.

Instalación lumínica realizada dentro del marco de las fiestas del Para.lel i Raval, Fem Festa Junts, organizadas por el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona.Se realizó una acción nocturna, justo debajo de los Jardines del Baluard, que conectaba temporalmente la Avenida del Paralelo con la Plaza de Blanquerna, atravesando la muralla medieval por el Portal de Santa Madrona, antigua en-trada a la ciudad. Los tonos azules de agua en el exterior y la calidez de las velas que invitaba al interior, dieron luz por unas horas a un paso que se encuentra cerrado al público.

Light installation carried out within the celebrations of Para.lel i Raval, Fem Festa Junts, organized by the cityhall of Barcelona.

This night action was performed just below the Baluard Gardens, temporarily connecting the Parallel Avenue with the Blanquerna Square, crossing the medi-eval wall trough the Portal of Santa Madrona, ancient entrance of the city.

The blue tones of water on the outside and the warmth of the candles, invited the people to go inside and for a few hours to walk over an access that is closed to the public.

Este taller práctico de diseño de iluminación de 20 horas formó parte de las actividades del Master en Diseño de Iluminación Arquitectónica de la ETSAM. El caso práctico para un proyecto de iluminación de espacio público es un solar recuperado por los vecinos en el barrio de Lavapiés y convertido en un parque público con huerto urbano, el proyecto Ésta es una plaza.

Este ambicioso workshop internacional de diseño se dedicó a proporcionar una experiencia práctica y completa de diseño y planificiación de iluminación arqui-tectónica, de eventos y de espacio expositivo. El programa incluyó 1.000 metros cuadrados de espacio expositivo, una plaza abierta, sala de conferencias, espa-cio de chill-out, los accesos al recinto y la imagen corporativa en fachadas.

El taller fue organizado por el Postgrado de Diseño de Iluminación de Elisava, Escuela Superior de Diseño e Ingeniería de Barcelona. Lupercales aportó la experiencia y el know-how, y dirigió esta edición del workshop dedicado a planificar la iluminación del antiguo recinto industrial de Fabra i Coats para la celebración del Festival Internacional de Arquitectura EME3.

This ambitious international workshop was dedicated to a practical experi-ence of design and set-up of architectural, event and exhibition space lighting. The planning covered 1,000 sqm of exhibition space, an open square, confer-ence room, chill-out space, accesses to the venue and corporate image of the facades.

The workshop was organized by the postgraduate course in Lighting Design of Elisava, Barcelona’s School of Design and Engineering. Lupercales was comis-sioned to deliver its know-how and experience, and the collective directed the workshop, dedicated to light up the facilities where the 2013 edition of EME3, International Architecture Festival, was programmed.
