8. Hackney Wick: Street Interrupted (Prince Edward Rd)
‘Street Interrupted’ in Prince Edward Road in Hackney Wick is an informal people space, a space by accident meant to invoke the spirit of 1970’s London street parties. The decorative elements used to promote this sense of accident include a village styled signboard, random plants pots, a trestle table and tree sitting in the middle of the road. This new space forms an important component in a larger public realm scale scheme comprising £3.56m for Hackney Wick and has improved the local environment for both local residents and the distinct local arts community. It was funded by the Thames Gateway Development Corporation, the GLA and DCLG, designed by MUFF architects, project managed and implemented by Hackney Council. To this end ‘Space Interrupted’ sits on the physical boundary between both these communities providing both leisure space, an events space, another link in the improved movement corridors and a place of interest for passerbys and residents.
Before
Parking dominates the street and there is little pedestrian activity or natural surveillance
